    Question New Kick-Off Rule?

Is the new Kick Off Rule in effect this year for HS Football? Any other rule changes?

New on in college we discussed, not sure if it's made its way down to the Texas HS level or not.

Now you kick off 5 yards from the 35(instead of the 30). Should mean more touchbacks, BUT if you do kick it in the endzone(touchback) the ball is placed on the 25.

It would seem that a lot more kickers will be automatic for touchbacks, but will the coaches want to give you the 25? If a player lines up on the goal line, now the kickoff coverage team is five yards closer?!?

Pop it up, to the 0-5 and have your team, which is now in better position to clobber them at the 10/15/20.

    Dumb change.

The U.I.L has adopted an exception to Rule 6-1-1: The 40 yard line will be the kicking team's restraining line on a kickoff in U.I.L. games.

Rule 6-1-7(b): If the result of the play is a touchback, (Rule 8-6) for Team B, they will put the ball in play at their 25 yard line.

There are some other rule changes as well for the college game which have been adopted by the U.I.L.

I agree. Who knew there was some sort of defect with the 20 yard line?

    Exactly right!

So, you basically 'penalize' the team 5 yards for the fact they have a badazz kicker that can put it in the endzone! That's a crock IMO!

Might as well just place it at the 25 when you play Carroll..... Save the kids leg, he is going to need it in the NFL. We may have to put the net up on kick offs when we play them.

This is an off year for rules changes so when there are changes made they are done for safety reasons. Statistics have shown that the most concussions over the recent years have the majority coming from kickoffs. Because of this the rule was changed to include the kicking team being restricted to no further than 5 yards from the 40 yd line when the ball is blown ready for play. This excludes the kicker.

And the U.I.L. accepted this change for the high school game.

Even though High school kicks off from the 40 there are not too many touchbacks.
