Okay...enough with the jokes. Sorry. I'm assuming you've already checked for leaks, low fluid, welded clutchplate issues. Old Cameros used to have a vss plug that went into the 'puter. (I seem to remember them being a 3prong dude. They were notoriously bad.) Otherwise, it may be the slave cylinder. My 2 cents. Good Luck!

Will it shift out of park?
If not, shift linkage is probably off, that would be the good news. I am assuming it is an automatic? I had a Volvo S80 where I had to open the hood and get a broomstick, push down on the linkage and then it would go. Tow-truck driver showed me the trick.

Otherwise, that is automatic clutch stuff which is crazy expensive usually a rebuild of the tranny. What kind of car? There is one Mercedes where the wall between the tranny cooling and the coolant cooling would fail, getting coolant into the tranny. Bad news, and Mercedes does not automatically fix. In fact, they are jerks about it.

Yes sir..the gears will shift into reverse, neutral, drive, 3,2,1 but, the transmission itself stays in park. It happened completely out of the blue.

Since Standards don't have a "Drive", Is it okay to assume it's an automatic?

Does it feel the same as it always has, when you shift? OR, does it feel easier or harder to move the shifter?

IF the gear selector movement feels the same as it always has to you, it could be expensive.
