Which Team Will Be Most Overrated?

    <li class="option"> Texas

    59.5%

    13.2%

    Texas
The Longhorns are always overrated, somehow getting poll votes last year when they were losing to inferior teams on the way to a 7-5 season and using two QBs at times.
Their schedule gets much easier this season, with the departure of major players from Baylor and Oklahoma State, which makes it even more ridiculous if this team stumbles and doesn’t tumble out of the polls.

    Dang,
I will be in Austin for the game with West Virginia. We'll try to take it easy on the Horns as they will probably be trimmed the next weekend in the Cotton Bowl.

are you asking WHY texas was receiving votes for being in the top 25?

    it's pretty simple.

they replaced DC's and still had a ranked defense and have a stable of running backs (which they leaned heavily on last year) with two 2-year qb's coming back into their 2nd year in the system with (what's supposed to be) a better receiving class.

you're really sippin the kool-aid if you don't think texas is going to be contending for the big xii(-ii) title next season.

Are you serious! Where have they been. Top recruiting class for the last few years, new coaches that haven't done the job. It points back to the man in charge"Mackie Brown"!

Papaw do you actually know anything about personnel types / schemes? Its been pointed out several times. Its not rocket science.

Replaced coaches and changed styles dramatically and still have a winning record last year.

Went 8-5 with an underclassman/true freshman heavy team in a league that had the best season ever for Baylor and OSU with an expected drop off.

Now they are coming back with their best players having had their first real strength and conditioning program under their belt.

How is this still confusing you?

For the record WVU will get butt reamed in the Big (x).

Do you eat crow? What happened to the JR and SR players. Couldn't the coaches coach them to their 4 and 5 star ratings?

Yes I do eat crow when Im wrong. Which tends to be pretty rarely.

The JR and SR players were recruited for different styles of play and in totally different systems.

If I recruit a player who is great at XYZ there is going to be an adjustment period when they ask them to do ABC.

Stylistically the spread and power run football are totally different and require a vastly different style of player. A 5 star spread QB can look like a 2 star under center QB. A 5 star power running back can look like a 2 star spread back.

Skillsets are different. Styles are different. Players are different.

Hey, all the speculation is done. We really won't know how good they will be next year besides what we all believe. They have not looked good the last few years so they do have something to prove. Truth is, with the recruiting classes they bring in every year, they should be challenging for the big 12 title every year.

Don't they? Big 12 South champion contention constantly. Its between OU and Texas every year with the exception of a few great years from other teams. OU is the only other team that has recruited on par with UT over the last decade.

    Think about this logically -

UT DOMINATED running a spread and recruiting the players it entailed. Brown decides to switch to a power run formula since every one else runs a spread to give his team an edge. With all spread players they have their first non 10 win season in a decade.

First full recruiting cycle goes into effect. Freshmen on the field in key spots and they go 8-5 and win a bowl game. 2 losses came from OSU and Baylor who had their best teams EVER. Aside from those two MU and KSU wins were 12 or less losses each.

Now think about this again. TRUE FRESHMEN. Their program is trending up and in a scary way if you're in the big 12.

they might have been top recruits, but that doesn't mean they were destined for an NFL career. it means that they had a huge upside going into college. there's a lot of reasons it didn't pan out. it happens.

but, if you follow mack's coaching trend you can see that he has a few mediocre years followed by much better years and then a drop

    1998 Texas 9–3 6–2
    1999 Texas 9–5 6–2
    2000 Texas 9–3 7–1
    2001 Texas 11–2 7–1
    2002 Texas 11–2 6–2
    2003 Texas 10–3 7–1
    2004 Texas 11–1 7–1
    2005 Texas 13–0 8–0
    2006 Texas 10–3 6–2
    2007 Texas 10–3 5–3
    2008 Texas 12–1 7–1
    2009 Texas 13–1 8–0
    2010 Texas 5–7 2–6
    2011 Texas 8–5 4–5

so seeing as they went from 13-1 to 5-7 to 8-5, what would the trend indicate?

No no no. That makes entirely too much sense. Throw it away.

This is 5a football and we have a reputation to uphold.

I really look forward to see what this version of UT can do. The stat that something like 85% of the roster was seeing its first spring game? That can't be right, but if its close to correct, that's a really young team. But just given the style and talent finally in place for the new style, I think UT may give a lot of teams a really hard time win or lose. Along with TCU, they should be the most physical team in the conference.

Interesting. Where did you get the 85% of the roster stat? If thats true thats absolutely wild. I dont believe its accurate but if its even half of that it would be incredible.

    Austin109,
I hear what you are saying, but why change what was working? You can compare their last few years with the rest of the big 12 except OU.
UT should be great with the talent that they have. For whatever reason, the coaching staff is not getting their money's worth.

because it wasn't working. thus, the 5-7 season.

and that 5-7 team arguably had more talent than the 8-5 team.

looks good on paper, all they have to do is perform. They have had excellent players every year.

Don't be such an obvious hater papaw. Your age should be mature wisdom.

In all frankness, I'm not sure the move to a power I game was a good idea. The OL has underperformed since VY's final year. Oregon is doing just fine with quick, under-sized Texas athletes.

Mack is not near the coach Saban is - so, the move to the Power I may not necessarily prove fruitful year in and year out.

I've been as critical as anyone - even Colt's last year - but you haters like Papaw are funny. Your favorite team is anyone but Texas.
