New Words

One of the things I have found that I really love about reading is learning new words. I often read with a dictionary handy. I am always amazed at how many words I still do not know. I also think it is interesting that every time I
learn a new word that word then has a habit of popping up in more places.

Recently I have learned the words

Moribund - being to the point of death

Obdurate - stubbornly persistent in wrong doing

Benison - a spoken blessing

Ordinands - persons being ordained

Priggish - arrogant or annoying

I also love words and keep a dictionary by me when I read. I especially love my unabridged dictionary! Of your list, benison was the only one that I was not familiar with. Now I didn't say what I knew what they all meant but I was at least familiar with them. Here are some for you:

BTW, some of these are quite appropriate for some of the posts on this forum.

polemic: an aggressive attack on or refutation of the opinions or principles of another.

despiteous: malicious contempt.

attenuate: reduced especially in thickness, density of force; tapering gradually - usually to a long slender point.

vituperation: sustained and bitter railing and condemnation

insouciance: lighthearted unconcern, nonchalance

circumlocution: the use of an unnecessarily large number of words to express an idea.

Hmmmm....sort of. It's pretty hard to translate and conjures up more than education and political awareness. There's an element of activism involved as well as sort of a concept that the obshchestvennost is the bearer of "approved" Soviet public opinion. It's not really a Soviet word, but they adopted it.

I can't imagine any reason anyone would need to drop this word outside of a very specific discussion about Russian history, society, politics, and culture. It's nigh-on untranslatable, and the concept doesn't really exist outside of Russia.

Well as it turns out I was reading, actually rereading, an article from earlier this weak about the current civil/political unrest in Russia and places the movement in a broader historical context.

Three obviously new words to most posters in this forum;

there - KtCarl is over there..let's get him!

their - Their patience was at an end for ktCarl.

they're - If they ever find ktCarl they're gonna kill him!

Mostly, the meanings seem to be interchangeable.

less- a word misused almost exclusively by everyone who didn't have miss skaggs for english.

fewer- see above.

we would be hearing her disgust over the phone lines continuously by the improper(read raape of the english language) usage of these words.

less should be used to describe an amount differential of things that can't be counted and instead must be weighed or measured. example- "i had less flour after i poured 3 cups of it down that dang ktcarls gullet."

fewer should be used when describing objects that can be countered. example- it took fewer aed shocks to revive ktcarl this time.
