Default La Marque Head Coach, Chris Jones, resigns!

I remember telling you guys, during the season, and as of late... La Marque was extremely unhappy with thier new head coach. I believe a desire to see him go has resulted in his resignation, though he will say it's because his family wants to move to West Texas. He had applied for a West Texas job at Andrews, but did not get the job. He leaves La Marque without a HC job being lined up.

Having coached 1 year and not been successful (winning a state title), there are very few jobs on the 4A level that you'd be a fool to step away from, without having a better 4A or 5A position available... La Marque is one of them. He worked as an assistant for 14 years, then as a HC/AD for Refugio for 4 years.. now he has the coveted La Marue HC job... where winning/playing for state titles is the norm... and he quits because he wants to "move" west?? This was a force-out, plain and simple!

Now, unfortunately, La Marque ISD will be tagged a tough 1-n-done stop for many coaches who don't win district and advance, at least, 3 or 4 rounds into the playoffs!

Looking at his record at Refugio why did they hire him?

Beats the hell out of me. La Marque is 100% football focused, so they want a coach who lives and dies with football. If he was "family" man basing his decisions on their desire why come to La Marque?? All of the people I talk to, in La Marque and Texas City say he was (without doubt or hesitation) FORCED OUT!

Btw.. his system at Refugio doesn't fit the Zone Read offense at La Marque, anyhow. This was doomed for failure from the start.

I watched them beat Port Neches-Groves at Reliant Stadium during week O and I thought that he was going to be a good fit. But after they lost to rivals Texas City and Dickinson and then got bounced out of the playoffs by Lumberton, who I had never even heard of before this season, I kinda figured his days were numbered. Although I thought he would last at least one more season. Didn't this guy tell the administration prior to hire that if he got the job, that he was planning to retire from there? I guess no one figured that he meant 2008. LOL!

No program has a harder time accepting mediocrity than LM. Anyone that has been to their games and sat on their side notices that very quickly. They have people that haven't missed a game in 30 years. SLC fans can just forget about arguing with me on this.

This is sad, sad, sad. Even though we play them now (preseason) I always root for area teams. I went to school in Dickinson and we played them. I hope this is not the beggining of the end. As stated before they are used to winning. when you win, 1 of 2 things happen , you have great atheletes led by good coaching , are you have good atheletes led by great coaching. If I must say the talent has dropped off in recent years.(they used to be a dominate force). With this happening a coaching carrousel is not a good thing at this piont. They will win games and make runs but championships may be a thing of the past if this keeps happening.
I'm not knocking Lm's talent , but from years past they are off a bit. If you don't believe me check the stat's and scores from previous playoff run's !
I hope they get back on track.

They switch head coaches all the time. More than any other program I can think of. This is nothing new.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with La Marque, except they have no money! Just look at their facilities. This program has played for, what, 8 or 9 State Titles in 14 yrs... and won 4 or 5 of them. The last one coming in 2006 vs an excellent Waco team! Their facilities are that of a decent 2A program! It's a shame! Outside of that, LM is STILL LM! Superb athletic talent and potential!

People don't realize it, but LM has an enrollment of about 1100-1200! And even with that they manage to have 2 OT's (both 6-6 290 lbs) get D1 scholi's (Baylor, Texas), 1 DT (Houston), 1 DE (6-4 255/Kansas State) 3 DB's (all D1) and 2 WR's (both D1... one that was 6-5 200 and plays for Houston)... all in the last 2 seasons.

And, don't expect things to change... they've got some pretty good size, speed and athleticism coming up from their freshmen and jv teams!

As long as they get a coach that's about putting 63 on the scoreboard, every Friday, and pretty much relying on the Zone Read they'll be just fine!
