Default Donovan to coach Magic - wow!

Kind of surprising -Billy Donovan to Orlando Magic is apparently a done deal. Good luck Billy - you'll need it.

Surprising move after turning down the Kentucky job.

Not surprising at all. The word was that he turned down the Kentucky job because his next move was to the NBA. The theory at the time was that he was Miami bound, but whichever Florida team fired their coach first was probably going to get his services.

Who was the last coach that made the jump from college to the pros and didn't suck? The only name I can think of is Larry Brown and at least he had ABA experience.

If Donovan wants to aspire to the NBA rankings, now is the time to do it. I don't see another back to back happening within the next decade, let alone from the same coach.

According to Bob Ryan on PTI today, the last coach to make the jump from college to the NBA with no pro experience, and win in the NBA was Paul Westhead who left LaSalle in '79 and coached the Lakers to the '80 NBA championship.

Well....looks like old Billy came to his senses....asked Orlando to cancel his contract so he can go back to Florida.....Orlando granted his wish.

    WHAT!?

Billy Donovan informed the Magic and the University of Florida over the weekend that he had second thoughts about agreeing to be Orlando's head coach, and the NBA team was deciding on Monday whether to let him go.

Donovan signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal on Friday, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Sunday. If the Magic do let Donovan out of the deal, they have to decide whether to enforce a financial penalty. Both sides aren't talking publicly because there are legal issues involved in such a decision.

These guys can make un-real decisions in 10 seconds during a game, but can't decide when/if/how to leave or not.

Word on the street is this decision was Ms. Donovan's - not Billy's.

He should have made the jump to the NBA because if you win back-to-back national titles, you migh have success at the next level. He has had a good record coaching at Florida so it wouldn't hurt to try the NBA. I guess he wanted to move back because of his success at Florida with 2 titles. I wouldn't blame him. I like him, he's a great coach. I wouldn't want him to move to the NBA and become the next Mike Montgomery or Tim Floyd. They were both successful in the NCAA and sucked in the NBA so he might have made the right choice. We will see.

The Magic have agreed to release Donovan out of his contract. The contract that he signed has a clause that bans Donovan from coaching in the NBA for 5 years.
