Who do you believe is the best team in the Central Texas area? I'm gonna be bias and go with my Dawgs.

Better watch out for the Waco Lions in that district. That is my early pick to win the district. In fact I look for them to be the suprise team in the state of Texas.

I would say Cove, but Waco has all of those Division I players--again, as usual; probably not the usual dozen+ this year. We would have to ask WLB for the exact number.

I think Cove has the inside track but Waco and A&M Consol could take it. Waco has good athletes and A&M Consol had a young team last year and will be a force to deal with. I'll know more after Cove scrimmages Abilene on Friday at 7:00 PM at Bulldawg Stadium.

I'm glad we're not ranked....with the changes on offense........everyone will be in for a surprise.

We will not have Ty Ivy or LeJerald Betters this year.

But, I bet we will still make some noise.

Honestly I think A&M Consolidated, Shoemaker, and Bryan have the inside track on taking district. Mostly aCm tho...cause they have a great group back...plus their special teams are killer.

Will never forget the aCm-Waco battle from 2002 that went to triple over-time.....the kicker for aCm Myatt hit a 48 yarder and still could have gone longer and it was right down the middle. Great field goal kickers can really change the game...and Consol has a great one this year.

Shoemaker and Bryan!!!! You gotta be kidding me. Shoemaker couldn't hang with us last year. I think it was 49-0 at halftime. We blanked Bryan 46-0, Blake Joseph, this big hyped QB threw for like 14 yards. aCm will be good alon with waco, but I think Cove has it again this year thanks to Brent Gardner and the coaching of Jack Welch

Cove is not a one man team besides if it were I would have Brent Garner put the ball in Donald Buckrams hands every other play since Buckram is their best offensive player. Since they play very well as a team my pick for pre-season best in CENTEX is COVE but it is a long season.

I'm always confused when people say Centex. I always view 13-5a and so on as SuperCentex, and 15-5a and 16-5a Centex. Some consider us the Greater Austin Area, but i'm not sure. If your including 13-5a then Copperas Cove should be the best team. If your only looking at 15 and 16-5a then I'll take either Leander, Pflugerville, or Westlake.

Hey the greater austin area can be centex too. Cove is still the best. After the way they scrimmaged against Abilene in the live quarter, which we won 7-3 on a 55 yd run by buckram, we can hang with almost anybody

Battlin - why are you asking a question then bashing people that don't say Cove. Cove will be good but will not win state and that is a promise, so it really doesn't matter who is the best team in the Cen-tex area.

CCdawg05 - That a much better reply then old battlin who is giving folks fits because they are answering his question. If you are judging your teams success by Judson, don't worry I have seen them and you will win by at least 20 plus points. I would worry more for Waco, and AMC they will give a much better game.

Probably Cove but im thinkin Consol could give em a tough time, plus we play em in college station

and this year, unless he gets hurt again, we'll have daniel palmer

most folks probably don't realize that the A&M Consol junior class has never lost a district game. A tie or two, but from 7th, 8th, 9th and JV A Team, never a district loss.

that might something to chew on...

palmer is a real hoss.

most teams won't get a chance to return a kickoff.

lots and lots of depth on both sides of the ball.

it ought to be fun.

who else is playin in Reliant Stadium this saturday, supposed to be several games, right?

Do they have a chance? Sure. Likely, probably not. Every dog has their day. The likelihood of avoiding one of those dog days is pretty slim. :)

A&M can go undefeated if they develop a passing game. That was their big problem last year. When teams respect the pass it opens up the run. A&M has some of the best backs in the district. Teams put a lot of players in the box to stop the run because of the lack of passing.

I think the Cove/A&M Consol game will determine the district champ again this year.

Consol has installed a new passing attack and used it on the scrimmage against Tomball.

Will have to see how they do with it....they get broken in quick against BIG IKE

What is your point about them not losing at freshman and jv levels. I have seen teams whos freshman and jv teams did not win a thing and then when they reach varsity they blossom together and win so your point is irrelevant. Until they do win at this level then all that other stuff is just history and does not mean much.

My point is that this group of Juniors have developed a winning tradition. Winning begets winning. It's contagious. While I don't want to take away from the Senior or Sophmore classes, this Jr. class has been a force to be reckoned with over the last several years.

I surely don't mean to imply that just because of this, they are a lock on district. Far from it, lots of stuff has to fall into the right places. I just thought it to be an interesting point to keep in mind as this season unfolds. This Jr. class finds a way to win.

Now, check back with me in 3 months to see if they can continue to claim such success. I'm definitely a homer, but a realist. Lots of great talent in CenTex this year. The proof will be in the pudding as they say. :)

Cheers.

Best in CENTEX last year don't think so as I recall that debacle against Cedar Park. This is a new year and on paper Cove looks pretty good but if you are basing it on the Abilene scrimmage just remember Abilene lost almost their entire team so they are not the same team that went undefeated last year. I'll reserve judgment until after the Judson game as to just how good Cove is this year.

Tigers say new offense is ready for prime time

By LARRY BOWEN

Eagle Staff Writer

The A&M Consolidated football team didn't dominate Tomball in their scrimmage Friday night, but the Tigers didn't disappoint, either.

After reviewing tapes of the scrimmage Saturday morning, Consolidated coach Jim Slaughter said he was pleased with his team's performance, even though the Tigers didn't handle Tomball like they did when the teams scrimmaged last season.

"Last year, I felt like we pretty well dominated the scrimmage," Slaughter said. "I'm hoping that Tomball is a much-improved football team, because I thought the scrimmage was pretty even.

"It was a very physical, tough scrimmage, which is what we were looking for. We didn't have anyone get hurt seriously, and that was a good thing."

The Tigers and Cougars worked for about 2 1/2 hours at Tomball's field. It was the only preseason scrimmage against outside competition for Consolidated, which will open the season at 1 p.m. Saturday against Aldine Eisenhower at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

The scrimmage matched the teams' first, second and third offenses and defenses, and included a couple of sessions devoted to the kicking game. The teams finished with one quarter of game-type action.

The only scoring from the matchups of first units came on a Consol field goal during the first 15-play session.

Both teams produced impressive drives during the last portion of the scrimmage. Tomball reached the Tigers' 3-yard line, but the Consol defense stopped the Cougars. From there, the Tiger offense moved inside the Tomball 20 before time expired.

"I got everything out of that scrimmage that I wanted to see," Slaughter said. "I feel like we're on track [for the season opener].

"There were no disappointing performances. At this point, I think the kids that we're looking at are going to be able to come through for us. I'm not thinking we've got to make any major changes."

The Tigers unveiled their revamped offense, which was adjusted in hopes of spreading opposing defenses. Consol coaches decided that working on the new system was important enough to give Eisenhower scouts a chance to see it in the scrimmage.

"We had long, hard discussions on what we were going to do," Slaughter said. "We talked about not showing it, but because we needed to work on it, we didn't hold a whole lot back.

"Our philosophy is we're going to show you what we're doing and hope that you're going to be in a mad scramble to defend all of it."

The scrimmage provided no definitive answer about the battle to be Consol's starting quarterback. Senior Josh Myatt and juniors Chris Jones and Kyle Gideon shared time at the position, with Myatt leading the Tigers on the long drive at the end of the scrimmage.

"There's no one that's definitely out of the hunt," Slaughter said. "At this point, there's not one guy that's standing out as the guy, either."

Slaughter said he was pleased with the work of receiver Detron Lewis, running backs Daniel Palmer and J.J. McMurry, and offensive linemen Matt Johnson and Matt Coates.

"Matt Reinberg has really been a welcome surprise for us at tight end," Slaughter said. "He is really looking good."

Consol's offense was hurt by penalties and mistakes, problems that plagued the Tigers late last season, but Slaughter said he doesn't see the scrimmage miscues as a sign of more to come.

"We're really talking about not doing those things after that happened to us last year, but I do not feel like it's the same as last year," Slaughter said. "To me, it's just early season mistakes.

"We were concerned because we're putting in a new offense, and I was very pleased with our offensive performance."

On defense, the Tigers got good play from linebackers Ryan Fitzgerald and Cody Smith, cornerback Leroy Thompson, and tackles Apollos Daily and Brant Scott.

"I think that's going to be a pretty durn good unit," Slaughter said. "I've still got some rookies that have some learning to do. I'm not disappointed in how they got after it, but they've got some things to learn."

Last year Cove was the best in 13-5a. Cedar Park was CLEARLY the best in Centex. The beginning of the year they had people out of position and by district play, they were just a new team. They settled who was the best team in Round Rock and they came out on top. However Cove is the best this year.

I aggree with you totally. I just need to see a few games played before I go crowning them regional champs. I do believe they are a good team and until someone in 13-5A beats them they are still the team to beat.

+1. The returning district champ gets the preseason nod for sure. But, yeah, let's see a few games, then let's see what happens when the first grade reports hit. ;)

(that was not a cheap shot at Cove, but a reality check for ALL the centex teams. grades have been known to decimate a good team.)

I'm so looking forward to this Saturday's two games at Reliant.

Point taken but fortunately for Cove They have not had problems with the grade issue. This has been a problem for other schools in 13-5A so as you say 1st grading period may be as big a test for some as the first game on the field.

:D :D Round 3...you are making big assumptions pretty early. 10-5A has several strong teams, and don't expect them to be pushovers. And I'd watch out for the Mesquite ISD as well.

Focus on beating the Metroplex schools before getting to Centex.

Who in 10-5A is a powerhouse. I must be missing some history here but I can't remember what team that might be. On top of that I did not know we were talking about Dallas area schools but in any case 10-5A is not even in the top 20 for league strength so that speaks for itself. :D
