View Full Version : South Garland @16 ?

 How could the DMN have South Garland ranked at 16 and North Garland at 10? Both have great athletes but I was at the district track meet last year and South is loaded!!!!! Another thing --not to knock North Garland but how long has it been since they have beat either South Garland or Garland? My memory is a little fuzzy on that. My point is that winners usually find a way to win and others usually find a way to lose.

SGHS has big questions at QB. They have what may be the most talented receiver corps in school history (and THAT is saying something) but are unsure that they will be able to get the ball to them consistently. The kid who is the frontrunner at QB is a running QB, similar to Deandre Jackson and Jacob Lacey. NG may be the best they've been since the early 90's. That rematch at the end of the year will be special...

I hope Lview doesn't have to face either team this year. SG looks loaded, I definately don't want them. Lee and Lview won fairly easily last year over them but I think it will be lots tougher this year. Hopefully Lview will win district and NG and SG will be 1 and 2 in their district. Some scary first round matchups for us.

Just imagine how scary SG would be with Reever pulling the strings......and on that note, whatever happened to him at LSU?

I can see your reasoning there owlfan 01 but still 16 in the AREA??? When the Gridiron Guide posted them as 13 IN THE STATE! Let me give you some reasons why I think that SG and NG should be swaped:
South Garland is losing a few linemen a couple linebackers some db's and a Qb and you're saying that a team that loses pretty much the same amount of players as everyone else needs to be that low? Give me a break! Every team loses players but don't forget the people South is keeping: WR Phillip Payne, WR Derron Montgomery, K Matthias Slaughter, RB Brandon Calhoun, DB Del Howard, WR Brandon Strait, LB Drew Lyons and the most importent Coach Mickey Moss. Are you saying the last year's "11-5a Coach of the year" can't work with some new players? Coach Moss has had all summer to work with new qb Lemon Roberts and there's no question in my mind that the coaching staff at South Garland has made him a better trower and runner over the summer. SG isn't just going to roll over and die with the loss of Derek Kent. Yes he was a big part of our winning but there's life after him just like there was life after Jorden Reever! I'm pretty sure I heard the same thing for the media and Garland fans last year "South is going to fall off with Reever leaving!" "How can a passing team like South be good with it's star QB leaving?" and guess what happend? Kent comes up and Moss makes him a district MVP. Also SG's JV team didn't lose a game last year so the new players coming up for SG arn't to bad.
Is that enough for ya cause' I've got more. SG should not be ranked #16 in the area and NG shouldn't be ranked #10 in the area they should be switched.

He got Redshirted I'm guessing. I'm hoping to see him take some snaps this year.

North is loaded and could possibly make a good run in the playoffs. South and Garland are both right up there with North- So district should be a little interesting. It was not too long ago since north beat south... but its been 13 years since north has beat garland... but man there have been some close ones recently.....
2000- Garland 23, North 21. The infamous 5th down during this District Championship and Garlands Homecoming
2001- Garland 14- North-13. Blocked putt at the end of the 4th into the endzone helped Garland(2-7) beat a well playoff bound team.
2004- Garland 38, North 31(OT). North had it won, but made a careless mistake to let Garland score.
Though I agree that maybe the rankings should be switched... South has many more questions than Garland and North. Both Garland and North are more secure on returning players. If I were you Travis, I would just let it be.... the worse Longview and Lee think you are, the better it is. Though it should be fun to see who beats who that last game to see the loser have to face Longview and which winner faces one of the mesquite schools. Garland gets stuck at D1 again with Lee.... whoo hoo.

Lee had a very tough time with Garland until the 4th quarter... I believe the score was 14-10 Lee heading into the 4th when Garland lost all of its momentum...I remember hearing the game over the internet and Lee scoring twice in a 4 or 5 minute span which basicly sealed it.

You do have a point. The North-South game is starting to get more importent then the SG-Garland game for playoff reasons.

If Rockwall can get into the top three, they will be Div.I and most likely play Garland. Then maybe lee- Longview vs. Likely North or South. Go Yellowjackets!

Someone asked about Reever...... he was so called blue shirted at LSU which basically means they did not have enough scholarships to give him one so they told him to walk on and that he would eventually get one.... but he left and is now at houston and idk if hes playing football but Jordan should have went to syracuse were he had a full ride and could have played

Slow down. Who said anything about South Garland rolling over and dying? Take a breath. First off, Derrick Kent was a good passer who proved himself when Reever went down against Mesquite two years ago. There is a big difference between handing the keys to Kent and handing them to an unproven player like Roberts. No one is saying that SG won't be good, but their offense won't be nearly as effective without a top notch QB. And no one knows if Lemon is going to be that yet. Therefore, a lot of folks, media and fans are taking wait and see apporach. Last year's results are last year. They lost some amazing HS football players, and they have a lot to replace. JV results mean absolutely nothing when it comes to varsity play. Moss is a great coach - SG will be in the mix at the end. I wouldn't worry so much about rankings and respect. If the Colonels deserve to be in the top 10, they'll get there soon enough. The great thing is that we'll all know how it comes down in about 12 weeks.
I'm ready for it all to start!

If South can't get their ducks lined up and find a skipper for that offense, they're gonna look a bunch like the 2001 or 02 ??? Owls that had all that talent (6 went div.1 and 11 went to college) but finished out of the playoffs. Heck, if Rowlett and Lakeview learn how to win, just a bit, South could finish 5th. Remember, nobody thought it could happen to the Owls, but it did.

What makes you think that Garland or North wont finish 5th you're acting like South is all of a sudden bad and they are not! Lakeview and Rowlett will have to learn how to win more then a little bit to top South. South has a "Skipper" for their offense in Roberts (and if you haven't read this in the thsf.com pile on topic) for the lack of "inexperience" with this new qb we make up for it with the best WR in the district (if not the garland/mesquite area) and 4 Sr. on the OL. We also have 2 Sr. RB. I don't see how you can go around saying saying that SG is going to get 4th with facts like these right infront of you! Garland and North has as much of a chance of getting 4th then South and that's unlikely.

I'm just saying that I feel that of the top 3, I feel you guys are the most vulnerable to failure simply because of the questions at QB if nothing else. If the QB eats too many forearm pads early in the season, it could get kind of long for you guys. I've seen it first hand, with MY team.

Good lord, we all know it will be Garland, South, and North- In no order. Garland does not play a factor because they are the biggest, so really it just depends on the North vs South game. Kind of sad that it looks that way, but thats how HS football is.

Don't bet on Rockwall getting that high. 4th at best.
BTW, NG is talented, yes, but not very deep.
Can't wait to see them play.

Personally I think they will finish in this order.
1. Garland--Not a lot of depth but extremely talented in a lot of areas
2. South Garland--Questions at QB but has HUGE talent everywhere else.
3. North Garland--Skill kids are as good as ANYBODY'S but they have
to learn how to win the big one. Their history gives me
that concern.
Remember this is JMO. I think it will be extremely interesting and competitive in that district this year. Ought to make for some great football games.

Depth is what the Owls do have. They will play over 20 boys thu out each game on both sides of the ball. This year it looks like they have 5 or 6 divI recuites. They will be fresh in the 4th qtr.
Moss will get the max out of what he has.
It will come down to that bigThursday game!

Holy mackeral, Garland no depth? What you smokin'? The Owls return 39.....yes....that's 39 lettermen and 11 starters. They have a 63 man roster and only 2 sophmores on the squad. This MAY be the deepest and most experienced team in the history of Garland city football, with the exception of the 1964 championship team. Man, don't do that, you almost gave me a stroke.

It is hard to see the extent of the depth when you rotate all 11 players out at once. While Coach Jordan does rotate often, I seriously doubt that at any one time less than 8 first teamers will be in there when it matters most. Rotating 3 or so players out at a time is much more effective than an entire team at once. If the second team looked weak, well maybe they were by themselves, but they will be much more potent when pitted with our first teamers. Now after saying that - the depth is amazing. When you are able to play Johnny Wooten at back up running back you know you have depth.

Who are the backups in the offensive line? Where are the defensive ends? I heard one quit and the other two are hurt. Letterman do not translate into depth. If you are not deep in your offensive and defensive lines that always spells trouble.
