Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2004 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Guess they dont take the AP or IB tests?

it is probably based on divesity.. that would explain why we are ranked so poor.

is the school rankings based on that to, each diffrent race factored in as well? or is it just everybody over 90 percent?

The top 1000 list seems suspect to me. There is a flavor of richer schools and bigger schools on the list, but there is plenty of smaller schools and some head scratchers that make me ask, "How did they make the list?" I've always thought some of the top 1000 were garbage schools.

I think we've run out of things to say. I've driven through there and it's like one continuous city between McAllen and Harlingen. There are a few cool things to see and do in the surrounding towns. I always thought the Valley was real poor, but they're building plenty of houses and there are other cities and towns in Texas that I think are worse than most of the Valley cities.

I thought about White, too. The one that got me the most was Lanier in San Antonio. It's 2 blocks away from the worst project in San Antonio. He didn't put the towns down and that can lead to some confusion. James Bowie is a 1A school in East Texas, but they may be talking about Judson's favorite team, Austin Bowie.

I said that because that was the final straw that got him canned at Indiana. A kid walked up to him and said that instead of calling him Mr. Knight or Coach Knight. Bobby went off about the kid not showing respect.

I laugh everytime I see the chair-throwing incident, but as far as I know it was a one-time thing. Back in 1992 (I think) he went to a press conference at the NCAA Tournament with a whip and said it was one of the best motivational tools ever made! He knew the media hated him, so he'd always give them good ammo and sound bites. I like the one when somebody asked him about game faces and he started contorting his face into all kinds of looks and said, "Does this look like a game face?" :D

He choked the kid at Indiana, but that was the incident before the berating. You need a scorecard for everything he did. He headbutted players during games and would go off on his son, too.

I wish I had a 10 foot by 10 foot room and could lock Bob Knight, Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Lou Piniella inside and see what they would do! While we're at it add Kyle Turley, Ron Artest, John Cheney, and John Rocker to the list and double the size of the room. :D

Hillcrest High School is just north of University Park and east of Preston Hollow and in the Glen Lakes area. Yes they bus in lots of students(that doesn't mean bussed students can't take AP exams) but they also have lots of wealthy neighborhood kids there. Same with W.T. White. Its in the same neighborhood as Jesuit, which puts it blocks north of the most wealthy neighborhood in the state of Texas in Preston Hollow. Plenty of neigbhorhood kids there.

Well the list is based (I think) on the percentage of students in AP and IB classes, not on how many students take the tests.

The ranking is based on number of students taking the actual AP tests:

"Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2004 divided by the number of graduating seniors."

The main reason for taking the tests is to bypass taking those classes in college. Quite a few kids show up with enough AP credits to be a Sophomore academically. That eliminates an entire year of school and the costs associated with it (about $16,000 for a Texas 4-year Public University)
