The original post should probably read best game EXCLUDING 1994 John Tyler vs. Plano East in the regional semifinals.

Given that...my vote goes to...

2001 Houston Madison vs. Galena Park North Shore regional semi-final. Two unstoppable forces on offense put up 119 combined points in regulation. Madison won that game 61-58 riding the talent of QB Vincent Young and RB Courtney Lewis among others. North Shore featured QB Willy Gaston, RB Kevin Moore and WR Chad McCullar...and a group of sophomores on defense that would later lead one of the best team defenses in state history as seniors after a trial by fire against Madison. They were the top two scoring offenses in the state that year. The game was played before a crowd of roughly 40,000 in the Astrodome.

Despite being such a high scoring game, there were some absolutely jarring hits laid down by the defenses and special teams units. There was more energy in the Dome for this game than anything I've witnessed on the HS level before. The hype for this match-up was incredible in the Houston area, and unbelievably, the game actually delivered on that and then some.

The best game I saw all of last year was Denton Ryan vs. Irving Macarthur in a Bi-District game at Texas Stadium. Justin Willis and Duane Brooks locked up in a classic QB dual. An all-around great game.

It was like a PS2 or XBox game. Never seem the upper deck of the dome open. Not even for the Oilers or Astros.

One of my many favorites is TWHS vs Tyler Lee @ Texas Stadium.. I believe it was semifinals 2003 playoffs.

My sentiments KT. Thanks for mentioning that particular game..... I did not not want to sound too much like a homer but that was one heck of a game.
Shore had a chance to win that with a minute and a half left but the the receiver dropped Gaston's pass on Madison's 25 yard line. The next two plays resulted in offensive penalties, Shore went backward and the rest is history.
I can remember seeing Reid on the sideline watching Gaston work the team and Reid looked like a young kid in the 6th grade standing there but he was all everyone was talking about for next year. That's what I love about HS ball. You get to see these future stars when they are unknown and watch them move up.

The Woodlands-Tyler Lee was a quarterfinal game in 2003. I was watching Channel 7 news in Hawkins and went out to my dad's truck to listen to all 3 overtimes.

That John Tyler- Plano East game will cost you about $20 and it's easy to get. I'll help you if you can't find it. Personally, that game does not rate near the top for me. It was late at night and there were too many mistakes made. The comeback was exciting and nice, but the quality wasn't there.

I still say the best game was the 2002 D1 5A title game between Judson and Midland because the whole ball of wax was riding on the outcome and the lead switched hands 4 times in the last 4 minutes of the game.

That Madison game and the SLC-Vernon games were top games. Even the Daingerfield-Gladewater game in 1984 was great.

The exciting part was that after all that chad mcculler turned a stop route into a 25 yard gain and fell inches short of the first down for the loss. it was like such the heart breaker. it just goes to show you that this game is a game of inches. And i remeber bobby when i played and he i hate to say it sucked. his fresh. year he ran like a 5.1 in the 40 and couldnt complete a pass if his life depended on it. it war real exciting to watch him grow. i talked to him not to long ago and we were laughing about that but anyways good luck to him and the cowboys next year.

03wideout- Whats Reids stature with OSU? I see a lot of print giving him the nod this year but have seen nothing solid. OSU was on tv some last year and
I would love to have watched him play. I can't help but believe with him at the helm OSU will be very competitive. Reid is a winner and is used to winning.
If you've talked to him recently give us the lowdown. Also, are you playing this year or have you graduated?

I will go with Longview in 1937 when they won their championship because i liked the line bleed said about the rat's rectum. :) It was a classic game. A lobo ran over 3 players with his leather helmet and won the game in the final seconds. Later that year he went on to fight in WW1. LOL 1937 was before ww1 right?? oh well!! ;) Ok , i really do not have no clue what the score was but i bet it was a barn burner of a game?? :o

Well you're part right lmao. D. Miller ran the touchdown into the endzone mid way into the 4th to go up 13-12 before we scored another TD LATEEEEE in the game to put the nail in the coffin at 19-12....Man I know way too much.

SLC vs Vernon - Pennington Field

This was a great game. Pennington Field was oversold by 3000+ people. It was very cold. We sat on the field wrapped in blankets at about the 5 yard line.

SLC was undefeated and state #1. Vernon was undefeated and state #2. 3A Region 1 championship game. Dexter Butler was all everything for Vernon. He was star RB and a good receiver. He was the kicker, punter, linebacker and kick returner. He was a great player with several D1 offers. Late in the 4th quarter he fumbled inside the 5 yard line (a few feet from me) and SLC recovered. Had he scored the game would have been essentially over. With about a minute remaining SLC had the lead but was forced to punt. Instead of kicking the punter turned around and ran backwards to the goal line and out the back of the end zone for a safety. SLC then had a free kick rather than risking a blocked punt. SLC held on for the win and then had an easy road to the state championship, 16-0.

I heard that Dexter Butler was so distraught over the loss and the fumble that he didn't return to school, didn't graduate, and never played football again. Don't know if that's just a rumor or not.

the best game i ever saw was the 1977 hp v plano reg final game in texas stadium. plano scored 29 unanswered points from mid 3rd on with final td on a flea flicker pass from wr to rb across field with less than a minute to go(after failing to carry out play as wr dropped lateral 2 plays earlier). they went for 2 and held on as hp drove to 30 yd line as game ran out. i get chill bumps just reliving it in my mind. the permian coach had gone to the hp coach at halftime to congratulate them and tell them what an honor it was going to be to play such a dominant team. the silence on the east side of ts was deafening when plano came back. what a beautiful sound it was.

the best game i have read about was in 63 between sa lee and linus baer vs sa breckinridge and another great back whose name escapes me. both backs had career numbers in that game and the score was in the 40s for each team, without resorting to ot.

The black vs. white issue added fuel to the fire. Baer went to play at UT and McVea played for Bill Yeoman at Houston. It wasn't long after that when the major universities decided they needed to recruit black kids, too.

I know I'm going to date myself, but...I was a freshman in High School at New Braunfels then, and we did'nt have all of the video capabilities that we have now..I read about the game the next day & remember how amazing the stats were...both guys just ran up & down the field, doing everything....they eventually got some film of the game & got it on TV, but it was before ESPN, and the other things we take for granted today (color) & it was'nt as high quality as we're used to now....

2001 4A State Championship Game Denton Ryan vs. Smithson Valley
Neither team led by more than 7 points throughout. Denton Ryan leads by 7 at halftime, SV kicks off after half and forces a Ryan fumble on the return and scores to tie it. SV takes a 7 point lead with under 4 minutes to go when Denton Ryan marches down field to tie the game. Just then, it starts POURING DOWN RAIN!!! SV ball with 2 minutes left, goes 4 and out. Denton Ryan marches down field and sets up for a 47 yard field goal with 3 ticks left. Misses the field goal in the pouring rain... OVERTIME!!!
Ryan scores on a broken play QB scramble and SV's QB gets within 9 yards and throws an interception after being hit in the backfield. Game Over. Denton Ryan wins.

Wish it could've ended differently, but this was THE MOST thrilling game I have ever witnessed. Still a heart breaker though...

except for the multiple mistakes in the form of dropped passes, i might agree.
