View Full Version : Judson Rockets Back's Suck-scrimmage

GOOD NEWS FOR ALL of 26-5A :)

Went to Judson scrimmage yesterday, this is what I observed.

A bunch of small backs with no size fumble anbout 10 time in limited scrimmage. What happened to Judson did all of their backs with size got to Wagner? The backs I saw yesterday, looked like they weigh 155-160 at the most and are short. The O-line opened holes, and they would stutter step, and try to bounce outside, not one JR back I saw yesterday ran was committed to run hard up inside.

I went to Judson Spring Game too, saw same thing, a lot of fumbles by small backs. What happened to Judson's tradition of having a back that runs hard inside and will punish teams? I can tell ya, if my team run blitz or fakes it, take away outside run, and force their backs to run inside, the fumbles will come. On 3rd and 1 or 2, all they can do is run QB draw. Not a good thing when on short yardage , U have to depend on QB to run for 1st because their backs are so small, if they aren't in spread, all you have to do is put 8 in box and they are done, their backs can't break tackles.

Judson is spoiled by playing in Domes and on artificial turf, they are forgetting their smash mouth tradition. I have never seen a Judson team with so many small backs, new O coordinator will be in trouble. 300 pd lineman running spread O with smurfs. The blitz will kill them, because these lil backs cant block a sole

Judson is going to the spread?

Yep...they run Spread O, with lil backs. Wrs have good height/size, but QB and backs are small, hit them hard and they fumble. I saw J-Rkt run spread in Spring Game, that was something different from a team that prided it self on Smash-mouth football and out working its opponents. They had some big kids carrying the ball during Spring game that ran hard inside and through people. Don't know what happened, backs with size disappeared and now they have a bunch of midgets in backfield, maybe they transferred. Can't believe Judson sold out, and giving up on pounding the rock for Spread $%#@!. If I was defensive coordinator, I would blitz their azzez to death, nobody with size in backfield to protect QB.

"T. Roosevelt will Shock the World"...surprise team from Region IV

should have a good team regardless considering the number of returning starters.and this is the first ive herd about judson switching to the spread offense,i would think that you would want to stick with what has worked so well for so many years.

But if the team can't run it, then you should change your plan of attack to something your team can run.

Judson is runnign spead and you must have seen a different scrim the ni did yesterday...there were only 2 fumbles by the varsity....alot of those small palyers were JV....also...yes we have small backs but u have to give them time they have only been practicing for a week. I think you will suprised come district and playoff time....

i know scrimmages really don't always show the "true" performance of a particular team, but you kind of get an "idea" of what you have for the season......does Judson really look that bad?? if so, it may be a loooooong season for Lonny and his band of Rocket fans......if the running sucks, the blocking sucks, and they are turning the ball over alot, how is the passing game?? if you run the spread and your running game is lacking, you better have a QB who can dish the ball out...how is the QB situation?? what about the defense???..knowing the running game is lack-luster, opposing defenses will be sitting back waiting on the pass, not to mention blitzing almost every play...could turn into a one-dimensional offense which isn't very good.......elaborate a little...............................Longview was a strong running team until the late 90's.....other teams started stacking the box with 9 players and started shutting the run down.....we had no choice but to start some type of a passing game....made us 2 dimensional--best thing that ever happened here in Longview.......just don't understand why we abandoned that offense in the title game against Katy in '97???......anyway, tell me more about the Rockets team as a whole..............

Yet another sign that the apocalypse is upon us...Judson is going to the spread. Unreal. Hatter, why mess with the success?

bleedgreen
08-14-2005, 12:11 PM
probably because the coach knows that he doesn't have that "Fox-like" type of RB this season and opposing defenses will be keying in on and stinging those inexperienced, smaller RB's.....really has no choice...............especially if the blocking is terrible like TR-SA stated earlier.......

i dont remember the last time judson had backs with size and they seem to do just fine and up until kyle fox until Jr. year never could hold on to the rock just wait it was just the second day in pads come see judson smash on mashell next week and you ever think that defense is just good enough to cause trouble for those backs

I have said all along that if they don not produce a back that can get around 1500 yards they will not be in the hunt this year, spread or no spread.

gibberish
08-14-2005, 12:37 PM
I think Judson is just adapting to the times, and if there was ever a time for Judson to change now would be the time. Seeing as how a lot of the coaches departed for Wagner.
Plus in a couple of years when enrollment goes down they will need to be more versatile and be able to throw the ball. I also think the run, run, and run again still works a lot better in region 4, and then once they hit region 1,2,3 top dogs they need to be able to spread the ball around. Just my opinion.

You can look at the scrimmage in a number of ways. Judsons D was great and that is why the backs had a tough time of running. The backs are no good and Judson is doomed, or somewhere in between. Judson's detractors will bash the backs and the supporters will say this defense is the second comming. Truth is it is probably somewhere in between.
We probably are not going to have any idea what type of backs Judson has until week 2 or later. Next weeks scrimmage vs. Marshall or the 1st regular season game vs. Laredo probably will not shed any light.

Just wanted to add this note...

Congratualtions TR-SA, you've been printed on every Judson RB's locker. :D

You never know who might be sweeping the board for a little material. In fact, I know many programs have a coach, or coaches, that are designated to sweep BBs in spare time for material. An obvious word of advice, although too late for our intrepid poster above, be careful what you post because you never know where it'll end up.

I have always said that judson while there running game has always been good needed to update there playbook...and now we have it.

I have heard of some writing stuff negative about their own team, then using it as insperation. These boards are no source for a good coach to get info, but it does come in handy when getting teams fired up. Why do you think I try to get people so agitated at me. It ='s print out and give to SV players!

SV05 Champ -I am sure if Judson loses to you guys they can always use the same excuse that they were not ready yet, offense behind the defense, should of had more time, the coaches blew the game, but knowing the class that Judson has across the state thety would probably just say the better team won.

Judson going to the spread?? That is just a dang shame!! The best team in 5a history is giving into the times and is not sticking to what got them a zillion state championships?? Now that makes sense?? I mean i know it has been such a long long time since they won a championship?? 2002!!! ;) I mean come on?? The only team that lost to last year was a team that ran the wishbone!! I bet the switch back really quick if it gets ugly!! I almost hope it does!! AKA Garland AKA Ike!! once they got back to their style they started winning again.

I was happy to hear that Permian was going to the wishbone!! I miss those type of offenses!! Not many have them anymore!! Clear Lake and Spring Westfield sure proved the wishbone can still be very effective.

If Katy ever goes to the spread i might puke!!

Rockets are still going to run the ball behind a huge offensive line with two potential all-staters. Learning a new offense?--to a certain extent. Judson over the last few years has run 3-4 receivers and/or a one back set at times.
Fumbles--a couple, but that may be the norm against the Rocket defense this year. To be extremely alarmed at a scrimmage is asinine. In '92, Judson was outscored 4-2 TD's by Marshall in their 1st scrimmage. By the end of the season, Judson did okay--just a 52-0 victory in the state title game. It's a preseason, intrasquad scrimmage. Time to check out a few things, not time to panic or listen to biased idiocy of from some Puff Rider. Good luck to everybody's scrimmages next week. Keep the players healthy.

pack0808
08-14-2005, 10:40 PM
I do not care if they are still going to run the ball!! I want to see those huge offensive lineman with 1 or 2 wr's just pounding people with the run gaining at least 5 a pop. That is the Judson i know!! Do people really think that 2000 style defenses are that much better against so called ole school type of offenses?? It really does not make sense?? I honestly think teams that run the so called older school style offense has the advantage these days do to teams constantly seeing the spread. There is still several very good or great teams in running type formations thank God. AKA Katy, Longview, NorthShore, Arlington Lamar, Spring Westfield, Garland, Dallas Carter, Cooperas Cove, Klein Collins etc etc etc

Mad Hatter
08-14-2005, 11:32 PM
oh i agree but some times you need to add some stuff to the mix...judson will still and always will be a running team i dont think that will change however. They are developing a passing game to be more balanced. Is there something wrong with that?

pack0808
08-14-2005, 11:43 PM
No, It is just that they are doing that with the spread!! They could pass more in their normal Judson sets!! By the way, was 12 or 13-1 that painful for Judson to take that they have to totally change their look on offense?? I mean the only team they lost to ran the freaking wishbone not the spread. Hey, they are free to do what they want but it is sad to me to see a great team like Judson give into the times.

DiamondJ2
08-15-2005, 12:46 AM
Main reason for wrinkles to offense: new offensive staff & very good receivers. Rackley is open to change--now don't faint. Will it be drastic, depends on how things work out early, especially against Copperas
Cove and Pflugerville. Judson does not have a good passer, mainly because the system doesn't really empahsize the pass--all the way down to iddle school teams. I agree, pack, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm a traditionalist, but I do enjoy the likes of the SLC offense. As a steady diet, probably not.

Mad Hatter
08-15-2005, 01:36 AM
oh i love to see good running backs...i think judson will be a 60% run 40% pass...thats way better then 90% run 10% pass...it will keep teams on there toes and judson will be less predictable. But i mean we still have Run off tackle left and run off tackle right...which is basically what got us our first 6 titles.

I like whatever works for my team. If they excel in passing then pass the ball more if they are better at running then run the ball more. Pretty simple concept to me. It depends entirely on the type of system you have and the type of players you have. Many have tried to run the SLC offense and it has not been pretty. Just like college and pros the league is loaded with copy cats if somebody else is winning with it. Some just forget that it also takes a very special personnel to do what slc does and not all teams can do it. It goes both ways, SLC is not built to run the power I either. It takes a lot of right kind of talent, smart's, and a great coaching staff to run an offense like SLC . It is not the type of offense you learn over night. Many have looked dumb trying to imitate it and then they go back to what they know and do best. AKA Ike, Garland etc etc

I had to drop off the girls in San Antonio and my parents wanted to see them, so I went to Longview first. I've been to all the counties, but haven't been to all the court houses, so I was working on that. I checked out the turf at Abe Martin and went to the Forestry Museum while I was in Lufkin. My daughters liked me holding them up to the rope that's attached to the Liberty Bell in Liberty. We went to the windmill in Nederland, Spindletop and the giant fire hydrant in Beaumont. They were getting ready to have a big car parade when we were there on Saturday. I ate a triple meat burger at Whataburger in Athens since they created the hamburger there. I drove through Bloomington right outside of Victoria since Red Rage said it one time and I hadn't been there. All total, I drove 2000 miles in 4 days and didn't leave the state.

I do like Bob Phillips and go to the goofy places like Earth, too. I wanted to get a t-shirt that said, "Welcome to Earth", a few weeks ago but the grocery store was closed.

Some places started in the 2.50 range and plenty of places were 2.49 . One time, I got some for 2.39, but here's a story for you. My dad bought gas at My Pump in Longview when he was coming home from work for 2.31 on Friday morning. Gas was 2.46 when he went back to work 12 hours later!

Erath County was not one of the 54 counties I drove in this time. I'm a big fan of Erath, though. They have Stephenville with Moo-La the cow at the courthouse and Dublin Dr Pepper with Imperial Sugar.

I don't put any stock in the original post. First of all, Judson had 3 mini-scrimmages on Saturday and this is coming from a team that fields 6 high school teams each year. None of the scrimmages were very long.

Judson never has RB's that are very big. Chancy Campbell was about 5'8" and 180 before his senior year. Kyle Fox was 5'7" and about 160 his whole career.

The Rockets really need to take advantage of their good receivers. Judson has wasted a lot of talent at wideout with the constant running. I don't think they'll go away from what they do best.

I really think the defense will be dominant and only a handful of teams will score 10 points on them.

Let me know when you come to Waco or Lufkin again for that matter.
I dig all that kind of stuff man....Plus I have girls too so they could hang out. My wife would really dig that.
The Sports Hall of Fame is really cool. They have a Bob Lilly helmet there that looks like a freakin' water bucket....homeboy has a biiiiiiiig head.
Let me know ...seriously.

And since you are a DQ fan....what year did DQ go from REAL steak fingers....to that processed crap they sell now. Remember?...DQ used to have real steak fingers. And they also stopped making the Banana Pudding Blizzard for some reason...communist bastar.ds.....I loved that. Banana Pudding was like the only Blizzard I ever liked...and they found out Wideman liked it...so they stopped making it. WTF?
Throckmorton still has a sign that says, "Home of Bob Lilly"

I pretty much stick to the Chocolate Chip Blizzards. I've never eaten banana pudding anywhere that's as good as my grandmother's in Louisiana. My dad always say BYOB when rating banana pudding "Bring your own banana, because there isn't any in the pudding."

They DON'T have a Dairy Queen in Wichita Falls, which is amazing. They do have good hamburger joints here. There's a place in Utah that advertises they are the largest Dairy Queen in the world and I've also eaten at DQ in South Korea, Canada, and Kuwait.

My Grandmother's banana pudding was the greatest of all time.
She used to make a bowl for the family....and then a separate bowl
just for me. She brought it to me every year on my birthday...
She died on my 16th birthday...and when we went to clean out her house....guess what was in the fridge?...My banana pudding...Man I was
crushed. Just hasn't tasted the same since then...My wife's is the closest anyone has ever come to Grandmother's.

Lonny, When did you go to Longview. I went home on the 12th of Aug, and paid 2.75 for gas. It is a real joke. Anyway you should have told me, we could have driven down together. 20 cent rise in gas over the weekend...

I got there late on the 11th and left on the 12th. I bought gas in Tatum, but my dad bought gas in town and got it for $2.31 before they raised it to $2.46 the same day. That's the Unleaded prices, not Super Unleaded.

I wonder what Sunoco runs right about now. When I was in Delaware, gas was maybe $1.20 a gallon, but they had a 100 octane pump off to the side that ran around $3.00. It's probably $5.00 now!
