View Full Version : Probably not possible but just an Idea

I was posting a message and had a crazy idea. Could there be any way that all of us old men on this board could one day all meet up somewhere and play a football game. Maybe touch or flag. Or if we really wanted to get crazy (or hurt)play some old school tackle football without pads. Probably would never happen but I am just curious to know who would be game. Maybe we could have some sort of barbecue dinner and just all talk football etc... afterwards. It is just a crazy idea. So if it ever happened who would be game? I'm game. Oh and Widey says he will run over us.....I say bring it on! He can be on my team.....lol. So who is game?

We gotta get Pack0808 on our squad too. He still remembers all the old plays...we were undefeated from 1982-.........well now. So I'm game.
where should we meet up?

I'll go on the record and say...if Lufkin and SLC play in Waco again...the drinks are on me. I'll buy all the booze after the game....

Well buddy, I've known alot of dudes that are in the 5'10/155lbs to 6'0/170 range that were some pretty bad hombres. It really doesnt matter what sport you do, as long as you do the best you can and give it 100%.

Well there seems to be some interest here. Maybe if everyone is serious we could come up with something depending on if we had enough people to make up at least two teams. Four or more would be great. Maybe a little something like 7on7. Hey Waco or College Station(I am sure widey would love the first choice but hate the latter) could be our gathering place. I am sure if a date was set to actually do something like this that someone who wanted to be there would not be able to make it due to work or prior commitments. Hey I don't mind going up against some young ones. Let's keep this idea churning. I know it is crazy but if we love football as much as we talk about it in here then maybe we could get something like this going. I think it would be fun. If anyone has any ideas please chime in.

You have to kill me or severely injure me for me to quit coming at you. I have always been that way and that is probably nothing to brag about when i think about it!! lol I am not 1/4th as in shape as i used to be but i am about 205 lbs now instead of 180 like i was in hs and college. yes the extra 25lbs is mostly from married life and fast food but i would have a little more pop on my hits with the extra poundage hopefully?? :) I really do miss playing some hard hitting tackle football with no pads. Especially when it was raining!! That was a blast!! I will probably go home with a collar bone touching my ear lobe and a rib protruding from my rib cage considering i am a brittle old man but it still would be worth it. :)

This thread is pretty much on topic and I don't see where this would need to be taken to PM or e-mail. That would take all year for me to PM or e-mail everyone. I was not scheduling any drinking get together or any thing like that. Here is my original message:

Well you would have to scout out some sites for us. One with a decent playing field and an area for us to barbecue. We can come up with a date soon if we can get a good location somewhere there in Waco. Just don't set us up at the Branch Dividian Compound(what is left of it) ok Wide. Once we do that and set up a date then we need to see if we can get a commitment from enough people to make at least two 7 man teams. Four or more would be nice. I think we can do this.

You have a good point. Ok D08 you can be my teammate, my coach and my band. You can play your sax all you want as long as you help us win. Hey CC57 that sounds like a good idea. I have to admit that Waco is probably about the best place for people to meet up since we'll have people from East Texas, Dallas, Wichita Falls and maybe West Texas, SA, and Houston.

Bleed, I have to look at everybody's schedules to figure out which games I'll go to. Maybe I'll see Longview over in Dallas, but a home game is always an option.

lonny---home games look pretty weak, this season......except for ECA...........away games are the tough ones----WM(at Indy), Lee(at Rose)...in Dallas, we have Mesquite and North Mesquite(and lake Highlands, but i don't consider them tough)...home--ECA,Rockwall, JT, Mesquite Horn........best bet for you so you don't waste your time would be the WM game, ECA(at Lobo), Lee(at Rose), or NM and Mesquite--these four should be pretty good tests for Longview...................

Sounds like a winning team to me. Hey Wide how did you guess my position on defense? I have some pretty decent hands too... one handed catches.... etc. At least I do when I have my 12 year old throwing to me out at the high school practice field. No really I can catch the ball pretty good. My son is no softy when it comes to throwing a baseball or football. He has a pretty good cannon. I am sure I can handle P0808's bullets but I am just not as fast as I once was. Besides, two receivers are always better than one.

It looks like I'll be out of the game. I volunteered to take one for the team. We have a guy who is supposed to deploy and get back right after his wife has a baby, but she's going to have twins and will probably deliver earlier than that. If the Wing Commander approves it, I'll be heading to Kyrgyzstan in 10 days. I might be in the Chair Force, but I spent 4 months in Afghanistan in 2003, the hottest 3 months in Kuwait in 2004, probably 4-6 months in Kyrgyzstan, and there's a decent chance someplace else starting in May 2006.

The age limit should be according to how many people want to play. If I say 30, one team might have more guys. You can check the calendar and see how old everybody is.

I guess we first need to see who is 100% serious. Then we need to see how old everyone is, make sure we have enough people to field at least two 7 man teams. I think in the end, it will come down to the old guys and young guys. It will happen, if for no other reason, because we'll all take Toby Keith's attitude and say "I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was!"

The only other option is to just pick when we all get out there.

I'm not sorry. I wanted him gone, but I wanted them to trade him. We all knew he was going to get cut or traded. It's like dying and not knowing how you're going. I was happy the Mavs got Walker and then happy he was gone.

I still say the C's are going to send Pierce to the Mavs at some point this year. They are going young and cheap. That's why they didn't keep Payton either.

Hey if that is the route we are going to go then lets do it to benefit the Men and Women in the Armed Forces. We might not raise alot of money but what we do raise can go towards sending care packages to the troops overseas. I know they would appreciate that. I know what it is like to receive packages from strangers since I was in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. It really boosts a soldier's moral. Yeah, it means a lot. My cousin works for El Paso Energy and he submitted my name as a deployed person last year. One of their affiliated offices right outside of Chicago sent me 2 boxes of stuff last year that I shared with the others. The Chicago office did a cool DVD for me and they also sent the generic DVD that the home office in Houston did.

You get a huge variety in Exchange sizes over there. Some are decent and some are smaller than a convenience store. You can't get off base for anything in a lot of the locations and you just get the basic needs and very few brands to choose from. You don't get a lot of choices for food to buy if you don't want to eat in the chow hall. A lot of people have their families mail stuff to them while they're deployed and they buy the brands they want and take it with them.

Well, my two cousins are making 5K per month now, and one just got out and bought a nice new house and car.
The 2nd part of the equation is the enlisted get about $260 month for food and the housing depends on where you live and if you have dependents. The housing rates differ GREATLY across the U.S. and world.

Officer pay is a lot better than enlisted pay and it's somewhat out of whack. Second Lieutenants make more than Staff Sergeants, First Lieutenants make more than Master Sergeants, and Captains make more than Chief Master Sergeants.

For those who were in the Navy, I just said Ensigns make more than Petty Officer 2nd Class, Lieutenant Junior Grade makes more than PO 1st Class, and Lieutenants make more than Chief PO.

I won't go over the Army and Marine Corps because we know they can't read! :D OK, Sergeants, Sergeant First Class, and Sergeant Majors get shafted. Yeah, the Marines like to use Gunnery Sergeants instead of SFC.

Here's a true sample of annual salaries with living off base. It's a lot better than when I joined because they now pay for 100% average housing costs off base based upon where they say you should live (That's long overdue to change!) instead of the 80% in the past. It's also gotten better because they now make pay raises based upon a little more than the inflation rate instead of falling behind in the past. They've also had targeted raises for certain ranks and years of service. My stats are with the average time people get married and number of years for each rank:

E-1's make about $23,000/year
E-2's make about $25,000/year
E-3's make about $29,000/year
E-4's make about $34,000/year
E-5's make about $41,000/year
E-6's make about $48,000/year
E-7's make about $56,000/year
E-8's make about $64,000/year
E-9's make about $74,000/year

It gets nasty for officers, but I'm not looking at the numbers and only using good estimates:

O-1 gets E-5 pay
O-2 gets E-7 pay
O-3 gets E-9 pay
O-4 gets $86K
O-5 gets $98K
O-6 gets $114K
O-7 gets $126K
O-8 gets $138K
O-9 gets $150K
O-10 gets $170K

Now lets' look at the numbers. You make E-2 and E-3 in a little over a year. It takes 3 years to make E-4 and about 5-7 years to make E-5. It takes about 13-14 years to make E-6 and 18-19 years to make E-7. It takes 19-20 years to make E-8 because the guys that make E-8 made E-7 and the other ranks faster than normal. You're looking at 22-23 years to make E-9. You get O-2 at 2 years and O-3 at 4 years. You get O-4 at about 10 years and O-5 around 16-17. O-6 comes around 20-21. The people who make General start getting that fast, so lets say 25 for O-7, 27 for O-8, 30 for O-9 and 34 for O-10.

I get paid good when compared to other people, but I'm still underpaid for what I do and am expected to do when called upon. You don't have set working hours when you move up in the ranks. The one's who excel have to sacrifice their family life and personal desires for the good of the Armed Forces. I don't want to work overtime or have to change plans to do stuff, but that's the rules. This will be my 3rd straight year to deploy and deployments bring 10 hour days, 6 days a week. Everybody used to be in tents, but they're starting to get more permanent structures.

The people that go to Korea, by and large, go without their family and see them after 6 months and go back to finish their time. The Air Force deployments keep working their way up and getting longer. The Army is even worse and the nature of their job means worse living conditions than us on deployments.

There are plenty of people in the military who do it to get money for college and aren't dedicated to the mission, but there are a lot out there who really lay it on the line to do their best. Part of the reason my wife left me was because I spent so much time at work. When you retire, they give a gift to your spouse because they have to raise kids alone to a certain extent.

I volunteered to go on this deployment and I did it knowing I'd have to make all my arrangements and leave in 10 days. I did it so one of the guys I supervise can stay here with his wife since she's having twins and will be a high-risk pregnancy giving birth before he gets back. She also works for me and will get out of the Air Force in the next few months. Originally, it looked like she would give birth after he gets back. I'm not the only person who will do this because one of the guys I supervised at my last base did it for another guy who had a pregnant wife.

Since $5K was the figure thrown out there, I'll tell you that anybody that makes that much gets put in the mixer daily. You don't make $5K without being expected to take calls at home, work late, and always check your email. The problems and challenges that come at you are expected to always be overcome. You can't plan on stuff, because you always have to drop stuff to work on something else.

Oh and what is worse than that, the people he was protecting were making 200K tax free money per year working for that big oil company there.
I'm glad you brought that up. By nature, working overseas probably doubles most people's salaries. Working in a dangerous area triples and quadruples salaries. A normal overseas assignment is bascially a 5-15% raise. If you deploy to the Middle East, it's worth $700 each month and tax free income for the months you're over there. We don't get nearly as much as civilians. I could walk in the door making over $100K in the Middle East and my military experience and time with the company could get me probably $150-$200K pretty soon after that. Being in the military and giving me one deployment a year has me at almost $60K and with a lot more responsibility than the guys making $100K as a civilian.

"I was posting a message and had a crazy idea. So who is game?"

I know this post is for all you "0ld Men" but I can tell you that at my old high school, every two years, we have an all school reunion. Our school (Spring Branch) closed in 1985 so we have no homecomings - this is it. During that reunion, the "boys" play a flag football game - some of the boys are over 50 years old. We "girls" don our replicated drill team uniforms (right down to the boots and cowboy hats and short skirts) and we do a pom pom dance and high kick. Our oldest member is from the class of 1966. Our cheerleaders even look great. Our boys beat the Westchester alumni boys 47-0. Our band brings it too!! So, it can be done and I'm sure there are aches and pains but you're never too old!!! We usually have about 1000 people in the stands.

Just my two cents.
