Eagles ready for flight Friday night
Ike to face powerful Humble on the road
By TODD HVEEM
Chronicle Correspondent
The Eisenhower Eagles will try and put the past in the rear view mirror when they open the 2006 football season against highly touted Humble on Friday night.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Turner Stadium.
"We are very anxious for this season," said second-year head coach Darryl Phipps, who guided his club to a 3-7 mark in 2005. "I think these kids are ready to go out and make a name for themselves."
Eisenhower returns only a handful of starters in defensive tackles Tyrell Gaddies and Rod Davis, free safeties Ahkeen Starks and Craig Loston and cornerback Melvin Thomas.
Gaddies transferred to Eisenhower from Kennedy High School in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, while Loston led the team in interceptions and pass deflections as a freshman.
The Eagles, who are picked to finish fourth in the District 18-5A race, have had 43 players earn college football scholarships over the past two years, but have won only nine games during that time frame.
Phipps is the third head coach the Eagles have had in the last four years.
After Humble, Eisenhower will play state-ranked North Shore on Sept. 9 and nationally ranked Lufkin on Sept. 22 before moving into district play against favorite Memorial.
"We are not going to duck anybody," Phipps said. "If you want to be state, district or regional champs, you have to play them. At least we have three of the first four games at home. But it is not going to be easy. We better have all the hatches battened down."
Humble, after finishing 6-4 overall and second to Westfield in the final District 22-5A standings in 2005, became this year's overwhelming favorite to win the District 21-5A title after Westfield and Spring were realigned into District 16-5A.
But second-year head coach Walt Beasley, who watched his club knock off Westside in the first round of the 2005 playoffs before losing to La Porte, knows it won't be easy.
"We are not sad at all that Westfield and Spring are not in the district," Beasley said in a recent interview. "But I still think the league is going to be plenty tough. We will have to be ready to play every night."
Including Friday night.
"Eisenhower is big and athletic," Beasley said. "They had a down year last year, but I am sure they are going to come back very strong.
"We certainly can't afford to take them lightly."
The Cats feature a trio of returning starters on the offensive line in guards Chase Beasley and Jessie Hernandez, and tackle Joe King.
On defense, DeAngelo Eddin and Daytron McLelland are back at defensive tackle, Cordell Riggins and Charles Hines return at linebacker and Darby Jackson is back at defensive end.
But the real key to the Cats' season could be the return of tailback Reggie Brown, who missed all of last season with a knee injury.
"He should really help us," Beasley said of Brown. "He started as a sophomore. He is looking good."
What do yall think about this faceoff, i know that thier are a couple of yall that picked IKE to beat Humble... Why the choice? Yall think IKE is gonna make thier come back, or is humble going to rule the girdiron friday?

The thing that is intresting for me is that Ike has the potential of just smashing our faces into the ground(anyone in the region really)... You never know with a team like Ike, but of course im confident in the cats ability to run the table in this game. ill say 35-7 humble.

Humble should win this one. I also am interested to see how Ike holds up. Maybe more name recognition than anything because of their past. Sure, on any given day it can happen but I don't think it will be this weekend or the next. Good luck Wildcats........

Oh i already give that program is Recognition...regardless of thier record they are a group of very athletic kids, and any school would be stupid not to respect thier history. BUt i know the wildcats wll come out with a win. And def. know that NS will come out on top... I gotta give Ike this, they got guts to schedule a physically gruleing schedule like they have with Humble, NS, and lufkin... If they can come out of it Healthy, it could ultimatley really help them. gotta play the best to be the best....

I'll have to go with Humble..but I think if they can keep a coach from trying to use IKE as a stepping stone to another program or leaving, they'll be right back to where they were in 99' State. Talk about talent and speed in one school.

I think Humble will take this one but I would like to see Ol' Ike start making a comeback in their football program.

Ike still has the talent. They need to run the right scheme (option, add some modern wrinkles), believe in it and one another among other things.

The Ike team last year was God awful! I did not believe that was an Ike team. They could not even go forward on offense. Lufkin held them to negative total yards for the game and shut them out. I do hope to see them make a come back. The Lufkin/Ike series used to be fun to watch until a couple of years ago when it has turned into a annual blow out. I will take Humble by at least 21 at home but I hope I am wrong and Ike is tough again.

I hope they return to thier old selves, any football fan that hopes a team sucks when they play them....are not gonna be Champs. I wanna see a good game, not a blow out.

I remember thinking: "this team just lost, that bad....IKE.." i was shocked... Didnt they play a much better game vs. AMC somthing to the affect of 30-22 lose.. I can handle that, but not a 53-0 loss.... Makes my head hurt

Definetly a disappointing game for me. I thought we should have played much better. Our Oline was just murdering their def. Reggie Brown was running all over people, but stupid mistakes and fumbles stopped too many drives. Saw somethings I really liked and some things I really didn't. I really can't say how good Humble is anymore. I think we need to get farther into the season to decide how far they will go.

They looked solid.... mistakes did cost us (QB). Our defense was a little confused at first with the option but they quickly got thier footing back to stop Ike from then on. Humble got cocky after Reggie browns 30 yard scamper down field...which led to Ikes score. after that Humble looked to taking it easy with the score 7-7... i was shocked at some of the plays the coach was calling... Passing on 3rd and 4 with reggie in the back feild???? (mind the Qb that night has never played a varsity game.... and you could tell the coach wasnt confident in his abilites with the quanity of running plays he was calling it was almost 100% run!!!) they also called timeout at odd times to just go on the field and allow a penatly for delay of game. anyone know why this would be allowed?
Humble was playing without thier starting QB ( unless he got kicked off, yet antoher disipline problem for the QB spot) and one of their big time LB's who is also sitting our for misconduct.... i dont know whats going on... the complete team wasnt on the field... Humblefield if you know whats going on inform me...because if Kenneth is out and so is charles hinez, then they will have to figure out a way to ge the balls two our play makers at WR... if you dont give them the ball then you are asking alot of jarret malone and Reggie brown.
Im not going to take anything away from Ike though... they played us hard on defense, but offensively we werent all thier tonight, with no QB its hard to score points.

They were trying to draw them offsides with a switched up count. The def. didn't bite however. I really think Baker (qb) showed alot. The one pass he had was right on the money it was just droppped by the wide out and when your running game cant be stopped, why change anything your doing. I think even with the other starting qb we still wouldnt have thrown it much more. Reggie was getting 5-10 yards everytime he touched the ball. He never had 0 yards or neg. yards the whole game. Baker looked a little shakey, but he hasnt even played in a J.V. game before I don't believe (dont take my word on it). He surprised alot of ppl last night. right now we arent going to have Hinez or Dabney for the season. As for Bowman, not even the players or coaches know what is going on there. Right now I believe its just this game he is out, but don't be surprised to hear it could be the rest of the season.

When i taked to a couple of players, they told me that Hinez was out just of a couple of weeks because of his disipline problems.... I didnt know he was out for the entire season.... i think they would of thrown much more if bowman was in the game, and you throw the ball more because you have Kevin armstead and Robert perry at wideout, both of them can catch the ball and you can cover more ground throwing the ball then running... The score would of been much higher if they had thrown the ball into Ikes secondary, thier secondary was weak and we could of capitalized on that.. but after five, basically failed pass attempts we kinda just stop trying to throw it.... Running the ball is effective but reggie cant do it all him self.... Keith baker needs to practice hard this Open week so that he can get him timing right witht he WR and get comfortable just incase KB decides to do a dissappearing act. Its incredible sad that teammate would do things to hurt thier teams chances at being great.... The Qb position is important so that we can score Passing wise and running... Solidfy that postion and Humble wont be able to be stopped.
I understand why the play was called...but where was the logic.. why are we trying to play so many mind games...Just run the ball up the middle it was 4 and 2, either malone or Brown could of made the yardage they showed that all game. This game was great game to fix thier tweaks, they will comeout stronger because it didnt kill thier players injury wise because we didnt have to play such a physically demanding game like in years past. They can finally fix the problems early so that they can have a strong run in the playoffs. Well see what happens against Jersey village.
