Great inter-regional matchup in the hills of Westlake this Friday night.

What are your thoughts?

Westlake is probably the favorite, but the Chaps haven't won a season opener in three years.

This is Westlake's year to go all the way. A dream offensive line. Talent and depth at RB. A seasoned second year QB who is the real deal. Capable receivers who are exceptional athletes.

Defense has the most speed and tenacity in years. D backs and outside linebackers are very athletic and very tough. Linebackers are just downright mean and strong.

Mentally they should be ready as last year's seniors (5 playing college ball now) left a legacy of discipline and teamwork.

Coaches are now comfortable in their roles as it has been three years since the former coach dropped them in the grease and the entire staff was given new assignments on the first day of two-a-days. They will have these guys ready for Abilene and everyone else.

Westlake undefeated this year - state champs.

Westlake is not yet true to form in the passing area. I am sure that it will be different in a game, but either the coaches have to make the calls or the receivers gotta make the moves because the WL receivers were not getting open in the scrimmages. Maybe the Hays and McNeil defenses were just that good, but I think it is more than that. No Surprise, but the WL pass defense was also suspect. Too many receivers went uncontested and defenders weren't looking for the ball. Could be a long night if that were to continue into the first game. I think the Abilene coaches probably got an eyeful at the Hays scrimage and think that they have a plan.
While Brad Dornak is out, Bron Hager looked excellent at fullback to complement WL's excellent contingency at halfback of Max and Jordan. I would love to see Jeff Ballew get the call too. I don't know anything about Abilene, but if Westlake shores up the pass defense and Nick and receivers can get the short yardage passing game on tract, Westlake will be hard to stop.

Well for those who dont know much about Abilene, dont underestimate them. The can sneak up on ya, they are know in west texas and 3-5A. The will not look flashy and very physically impressive, but them boys can play some ball. Westlake will be the favorite especially in the Cen-tex area and well, bottom line they are westlake!! Abilene will show up and give them all they want! believe me.

I dont know too much about Westlake, but it was said eariler in a post that Westlake has lost their season opener 3 straight years. They seem to start off slow every year. And thats not the only thing thats "slow" in Westlake, and i say that because it seems like every team over the last 2 years that Westlake has played that is faster then them has gotten the best out of them, Leander and Pflugerville especially. I dont kow how much speed they have on the team this year, but last year minus Staton Jobe (i've said it once and i'll say it again, fastest white guy i've ever seen lol) and Max Minor this was a very big but slow team. Is this years team faster then last years?

This one could get ugly. I hope AHS wins, but I think the Chaps win going away. The Eagles will get better, but traveling all the way to Austin is a bad way to start for a new squad against a very experienced group that is hungry to not lose in their first game again.

My bro. lives near the Hays shcl. He thinks that both Hays & Westlake have good teams this yr. So maybe the Westlake-Hays scrgmg. was 2 good teams butting heads. In that case they might both appear to have weaknesses in a scrmg. Abilene never scrmgs very well fm. the fans' viewpoint, so I really don't know what they have this yr.--we'll know after Fri. night.

Of course, I hope Ab. wins, but I have to think that Westlake must be a heavy favorite. I have a great deal of interest in this game but have severe doubts that Ab. will win (judging fm. what little I know).

I believe this year's team is faster, the linebacker position especially both inside and outside. We have a burner at wide out in Andy Spears. He's not quite as fast as Staton but he can fly. Brad Ballew is also pretty fast and is shifty. Stephen Shaffer the tight end is probably the most overlooked player on the offense I think, he can really punish people as seen in the Hay's scrimmage when he ran over people. I saw Bron Hager out of the practice some today. I don't know if he was injured or what but that will be a huge blow to the offense now and to the defense later in the season when the other fullbacks get healthy.

I nominate Westlake WR Brad Ballew for player of the week. He had 4 catches for 104 yds. and 2 TD's. Also added a 95 yd. kickoff return for touchdown.

Abilene's defense was one of the most aggressive and athletic defenses I've seen. Hurt them though, as the Chaps massive line picked up most blitzes and the Eagles secondary was beat deep on play action more than once.

If you look at the stats (which aren't always an indicator of who won of course), Westlake's defense was pushed around by AHS. That was one of the weakest defenses I have seen from a team that is purportedly a top 10 team. I do realize that this was Westlake's first game as well however so they have plenty time to improve. ;)

By the way, Ballew (#21?) is indeed a great player. I liked him a lot except he had the wrong color jersey on!

The stats are telling me that Westlake offense was starting with very good field postion to score those 35 points with less than 300 yards of offense. Also, WL defense probably had something to do with keeping Abilene out of the end zone for almost the entire game.
That said, I think Abilene has very good potential due to the strength of both lines and knowing there is time to work out the kinks. The 21 jersey is a bright spot for running and receiving for both teams!
I look forward to coming to Abilene next year.

Those are the wildest stats I've ever seen, there would be no way I could just look at stats and guess Abilene lost. Just a +1 in turn overs and a little better punting from Austin.

I was at the game. Our first possession was on Abilene's fumble of the kick off inside the five yardline. Our second possession was recovering an errant deep snap to the punter at the end of Abilene's first series of downs. We recovered inside the ten. We were up 14-0 and our offense had not even touched the ball. We also had a 95 yard run back of a kick off.

Abilene was able to mount sustained drives against us. I don't think they're a weak team or that our defense stinks. I was pleasantly surprised that our young defense was able to "make something happen" and keep Abilene from scoring for most ot the game.

The offense didn't put together a lot of sustained drives in the first half. They looked much better in the second half. Still, they will need a lot more improvement between now and the playoffs, which is to be expected.

Looking at the stats, it doesn't look like AHS is in bad shape at all. This is a young team and shows a lot of positives. Racking up good yardage is obviously a good thing and will be good motivation for the young kids. Coach Warren is got a good staff and Warren is an excellent motivator. He scheduled Westlake to give these kids tough competition, The score might not show it, but everyone I talked to said these kids hung tough in the game and didn't give up. That's what you want from the first game of the season. A loss is never good, but if you can come out of it with positives you can build on you can make the best of it. Better play on special teams and do a better job of holding on to the ball and the outcome may have been different.
The Eagles moved the ball well. Nothing taken away from Westlake they were the better team on Friday night, hopefully AHS will get another shot against them in Dec.

That would be something we could both agree on--a rematch of the 1996 state title game!! I agree with your assessment of your team. That's why I hate to see folks writing you off. The score of the game was more a reflection of the 21 points on special teams that you gave up. I think we still would have won on that night, but you have a good team and I think you'll have a good season.

I talked to a couple of AHS fans in the know yesterday - they were disappointed, but really felt the Eagles are loaded with talent this year - just very short on experience. Fumbling the opening kickoff on your own 7 yard line on the road began this disaster. I think it was a good experience for them - and the Chaps are clearly a very good team this year. I still have the Eagles taking district - but they may limp in from a couple of more early defeats.

You are right. It was a loss. Stats do give fans a way to evaluate a young team that is playing a decent opponent at their place. No one can say that Westlake totaly dominated the Eagles. Stupid mistakes turned into gifts which made its impossible to win. Young teams sometimes do that.

Good teams capitalize on those mistakes and make you pay. Westlake did that and should be proud with their win. No excuses here. On the other had I'm not writing this season off as far as the Abilene Eagles are concerned.

Our 22 game regular season win streak is over. The monkey is off these kids back now they can relax and play their game.
