View Full Version : What team?

Since I am new to Texas and I am trying to decide where I am going to go and scream at, I decided that I would ask you all which team that should be.

My criteria for this are fairly simple.

How close is it to me in 78728 Austin. I am in RoundRock ISD but Austin is my address. I am in the no-mans land between Austin and RoundRock.

My old Ford ain't up for long trips.
I dont get off on Fridays until 630pm.
Baby and I enjoy watching people get stupid at football games.

There you have it. I really am serious about this. Back home, we have been season ticket holders for the last 8 years at ECA. We need a school we can support over here. We have no kids in High School. My kids live in KCKS with X wife and they arent that old yet.

Thanks for your input. And seriously, thank you all for being so welcoming (is that word?) to me since I just kind of jumped in here.

Considering your car's condition and you living in the Round Rock ISD, I would suggest you root for Round Rock. Ok, so maybe they aren't Texas' (or even Austin's) best team, but it will make it all the more fun if they advance to the 5A state playoffs.

Go with Westlake. Not to far away and always play some quality football.

Considering the drive, either Leander (if you take Sam Bass) or pflugerville (if you live off I35. Westlake has the most tradition out of all those schools you listed but thats a heck of a drive out to West Lake Hills. So i'm gonna say either Leander or Pflugerville, and i'll be a homer and vote for Leander :D .

My truck can make it around town and stuff. I said it was an old Ford. I didnt say that I was pushing it.. (yet)
People tend to stay away from my old truck. It's big. It's ugly. It stinks (needs a carb job bad). They see the confederate flag instead of Texas plates and they see my fat butt with shaved head sitting here.

It is your basic Old School Cowboy Cadilac where the stereo cost more than the whole truck. :D

I tend to think that I would not fit in amongst the WestLake crowd. My being a few steps away from white trash.
Pflugerville could be right up my alley though. And it is close. I can almost see I-35 from my deck here at the sprawling Redneck Retreat. The Redneck Retreat is a quaint 3rd floor 1bedroom apartment on Shoreline Drive.
Leander. I know nothing about other than they are ranked in the 25. And I found it on my map.
Round Rock. Well. I guess it's close. I don't know where the school is. But it cant be far. They have a team.. I know that.
Some other 4A school.. Well.. I dont know if there are any of those around. Hutto is close. But they may be 3A. They have a nice looking stadium from the road.

There are 11 weeks of football. I only plan on being out of Austin for 2 weeks for sure. I may also be home for 1 or 2 others. I figure they way you Texans like Thursday and Saturday games I might could even catch 2 games in 1 week. That would be almost as good as.. uh.. nevermind.. It wont be that good.. but it would be better than sitting here at home and drinking green tea.

Lets keep those votes coming. Baby is depending on you. She is in Baton Rouge right now and she said she wants to see some votes when she gets here Friday. :D

Round Rock has 4 schools one of them being RR McNeil. As far as the main 4 sports that i watch (Football, Basketball, Baseball, and track) they are probably the best overall. Consistantly one of the better football teams in our district, consistantly one of the best in the state in basketball (even though they dont have AJ abrams anymore, hookem), in the running in baseball every year, and they rival Pflugerville for the best athletes in our district so obviously they'll be good at track. Personally this would be my pick if i were you. Closest to your home, more than above average in all sports, they are also ranked in this top 25 if you happened to miss them.

I say root for the Hutto Hippos. That's a cool name and I like how they have hippos all over town. The area is growing, too.

Westlake would be a little drive, but it fits in with what you've seen the last 8 years with Evangel. Since you've been watching Evangel, your best bet is to get out and see the teams with great coaching. Smithson Valley and Judson are both north of San Antonio and you'd like to see them play. You'd probably really like Katy in Houston and Southlake Carroll. I figure you've had your fill of Longview, but Lufkin is coached real well, too.

The 4A teams don't have a lot of appeal, so if you want to stay in the Austin area each week, the 15-5A teams play in a better district. That's the Round Rock schools, with Georgetown, Leander, Cedar Park and Pflugerville.

Lonny. Thanks for the advice. I refuse to go to SanAntonio area. Because everybody keeps telling me to go there.. Long story.
Houston stinks. It smells kind of Oklahoma City.. Stinky place..
Really though, both of those are just too far. Not really because of the truck.. Big Sexy is a Ford so she will not leave me on the side of the road. (fingers crossed)

I would just rather keep it close to home. I am going to check out Hutto one way or the other. The whole hippo thing has had me laughing since I got here. Then I saw the hippo thing on Discovery and found out that hippos are just on the edge of being evil.. Yes, I will go and see teams based strictly on the mascot. Hence, my going to see the Atlanta Texas "Rabbits". Rabits dont scare me. And there was the Smackover (arkansas) "Buckaroos". Those dont stir fear in my heart either. Go Bucks..haha.. they went 1-7 last year.
The SpringHill (Louisiana) "Lumberjacks". Scrappy little team. the Rogers (ark) Mounties.. Can't forget the Farmerville (La) "Farmers". haha.. ahhh.. those were the days.

Anyway. I am just going nuts for football to get started. Back home I went watched practices and stuff. went to the useless (according to Lufkin) scrimmages. all that stuff... I am fiending for some FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I were you I would not limit myself to seeing only one team. Check out all of them on your list. I would add that two very good 4A teams in your area are Austin Lake Travis and Pflugerville Connally. Looks like your biggest constraint on where you can go is the fact that you don't get off until 6:30. Driving in the Austin area on Friday evenings can be a challenge.

Yeah, that's what I did when I moved to San Antonio. I look in the paper for the best game going on that week. I mainly stick to NEISD, Northside, Judson, and others on the northern end of SA because its not too far from where I live. I went to Judson-Cove, Judson-Madison...even went to see Alamo Heights-Boerne and SA Lee-Seguin because I was curious about those teams. I don't stick to one team in the SA area. I support them all.

Yes Lonny, I supported Judson against Westfield :p

Considering where you are at, I would go watch either RR McNeil or Pflugerville. Both have a good programs with potential deep playoff runs ahead of them. However, I agree with catman. Try and go watch several teams. There is such a variety of styles in Texas after trying some out around your area, then maybe you can pick a favorite, and just attend their games more regularly.

I'm going to a Clemens game, too. I can't wait to see Judson beat them in the playoffs again. I need to look at the schedule and figure out what I'll do in Week 3 since Judson is off that week, but I'll be driving down from Wichita Falls.

I say you get another vehicle and don't worry about where you have to go. Another thing to keep in mind is that you can start going to Saturday games in the metro areas. Most of the playoff games are on Saturday, so you don't have to worry about distance there, either. You can't see Judson and SV play each other, but you can see them play on Saturday against the NEISD schools. The same goes for Katy and the Houston teams. Even SLC plays on Saturday.

you should try to go see a different team on your list every friday, i think you would get a better view of texas football that way, but of course for the really good highschool football you would have to go to either S.A., houston (that would include seeing LUFKIN play), or the dallas area. just watch what you can and then catch some play off games on saturday.

Since Judson isnt going to make the playoffs this year, I may never get to see them.. :D

The truck issue really is a non issue. Gas is the issue. My whopping 6-8 mpg. hahaha.

I am going to really plan my playoff stuff. But I will be going back home during that time as ECA is certain to be the 1A state champions in La.

LA playoffs end the same week as D1 in Texas, so I guess you won't get to see Judson win title #7. The good thing is it's on TV and you can watch when you get home! :p

So far, it looks like it's going to be Pflugerville. Baby and I discussed and we decided that we will go with Pflugerville and when they are not around, we will try to go see Hutto. The whole "hippo" thing is more than we can stand. Baby says I have to buy her a Hutto Hippo shirt to go with her Smackover Buckeroos shirt. I usually just wear my Shongaloo Tigers shirt. When people ask, I tell them, Shongaloo went undefeated for the last 10 years. Since they have no team (something i never mention) they technically are undefeated.

I have some relatives that live in Round Rock. That place is growing at a stuid pace. Anyway, go check out Pflugerville High (5A). They're on the East side of I-35 just South of Round Rock,, and have a nice football stadium. They usually have a very solid scrappy team with some solid "blue-chips" on it.
