Who is Port Arthur Memorial and why are we playing them?

I can definitely tell this guy is a newbie. Lufkin is playing them because Lee had to cancel the game vs the panthers because they have a chance to play vs a Ohio team on National TV. PA Memorial usually has some good athletes and had one of the best rb's in the state last year in J Charles who is attending Texas. Lufkin should handle them but they better not overlook them because they can be tough at home. I like my Panthers by 14 to 21 points in that one.

Yes, I am a newbie. You got to start somewhere. I am just glad that PA Mem. is not a blow off game like some we have had in past years.

Yeah i think the game will come down to the 4th quarter. Whoever is tired will not take care of business.
I pick Memorial by 3 if we're up at the half.

I really don't think Memorial has a chance. Lufkin will overwhelm them defensively and no matter how good PA DBs are, it won't be near enough to stop LP.

Our Offense is coming along much faster than in 2003. Just called one of my classmates down there. Passing game should be just as good as 2003 or better. I surely hope so because our soon to be stud at RB is just a 10th grader, but the size of Jamaal already.
timeout!

scooter i just wanted to wish P.A. good luck that game and hope that it is entertaining for both sides. i know a lot of the lufkin guys give u a hard time about playing us. i for one do not believe it will be a blowout win by us and have much respect for u guys. so what are some good eating spots down in P.A...never been there before. can u give me some feed back on your coach, players such as starting qb rb wr etc. and playing style this year.

We will be passing alot more since Jamaal is gone and we have some above-average WR's this year. Hopefully McZeal comes back then we have a shot of going REAL deep into December.
Defense is basically attack, attack, attack. if you play us expect to be gettin a blitz every other play if not every play, rather your in a spread or not.
Good eating spots I like is Nick's BBQ, of course your sonic DQ. Katfish Kitchen is nice, along with Texas Roadhouse.

Their not lying about Lewis arm. He has a cannon. amazes me cause he is so short for a QB. Joseph will be playing some at QB also, he can throw between 60-70 yards but is a better runner and hitter to me.
Picking QB high on Titans' list

Quick: name Memorial's top-gaining running backs each of the school's first three varsity seasons.
Jamaal Charles with two back-to-back 2,000-yard seasons the past two falls is almost a gimme. You might have to phone a friend to come up with 1,200-yard gainer James Johnson from 2002.
But now name Memorial's starting quarterbacks the past three seasons. Not so easy, is it?
Well, Memorial High's fourth-year head coach, Dean Colbert, can name the Titans' triggermen for his first three teams: Calvin Roberts in 2002, Cornelius Harmon in 2003 and Donovan Porterie last year.
What Colbert can't - or won't - do is tell you who will be Memorial's starting quarterback this fall.
And does it really matter?
Since the school's inception, Memorial's offense has gained 64 percent of its total yards and 72 percent of its run-or-pass touchdowns on the ground with the top runners, Johnson (1,212) and Charles (4,069), accounting for 46 percent of the yards and 46 percent of those touchdowns (57 of 127) with their runs.
"The quarterback is very important," Colbert maintains. "It's a crucial leadership position on the team, very important."
Titan quarterbacks have been good leaders -- and producers.
Roberts ran for 417 yards and six touchdowns and threw for another 803 yards and eight touchdowns on his way to a scholarship at Oklahoma State.
Harmon threw for a school-record 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns and took a scholarship at Texas Southern.
Porterie, last year's quarterback, passed for 1,134 yards and 10 TDs and signed with the University of New Mexico.
This year's starting quarterback will be either junior Davon Lewis or senior Antone Goudeaux. Colbert says it could go either way, but the smart money is on Lewis, who got the bulk of the QB work during Memorial's best-ever performance at the state 7-on-7 tournament last month.
Both quarterbacks took turns as Memorial's No. 2 quarterback last season, Goudeaux early and Lewis late. But neither got the opportunity to play much, as did Harmon and Porterie, who each got one start in their junior seasons.
Goudeaux's only varsity pass attempt, against Kingwood last year, fell incomplete. Lewis' only pass, against West Brook, went for a five-yard completion.
"It's not too difficult," Colbert says of the process of preparing a new quarterback each season.
"They all come up in the same system. They get the same number of (practice) repetitions, so whoever is called upon to play can play.
"If you remember a couple of years ago, Donovan Porterie had to step in as a starter in our first district game. We didn't miss a beat."
In fact, Porterie passed for 170 yards and a touchdown in Memorial's 42-21 win at Kingwood.
Colbert says he won't pick a No. 1 quarterback for this season until after the team's final preseason scrimmage, Aug. 25.
"We have a ways to go," he says, "and then it's a long season. (And) I always feel good when you have two quarterbacks that can play at a high level. You've got to have two quarterbacks that can play."
At 6-foot-2, Goudeaux reminds Colbert of Porterie, while the 5-11 Lewis evokes comparisons with Roberts, who was moved to running back when he got to college.
"Each of these two quarterbacks have their own strengths," Colbert says.
"Davon Lewis, his natural strength is his speed and quickness running the football. He's like a running back running the football. He's also becoming a great passer. He has one of the strongest arms we've ever had.
"He's becoming a better pass, but definitely, his strength right now is his quickness."
Goudeaux is a more deliberate quarterback.
"He's a good passer," Colbert says. "He has a lot of touch on the football, and a lot of poise. He reads coverages well."
Together, the quarterbacks are making things interesting for the Titans' head coach.
"The interesting thing about those quarterbacks is each one brings the best out of the other," he says. "If Davon's strength is running, obviously we're going to utilize him with that in drills. At the same time, Antone is improving tremendously, and as Davon sees the touch Antone can put on the football, he gets better as a passer."
Unlike the three previous Memorial teams, this one doesn't have an heir apparent at running back. That would seem to put a bigger load on whoever ends up being the quarterback.
"That's hard to say," Colbert says, not agreeing with the conclusion. "Who would have thought Jamaal would have run for 2,000 yards in 2003 when he first came out?
"But we're definitely going to utilize our quarterback, and try to use our quarterbacks' strengths."
TITAN TIDBITS
Wide receiver Jeremy McZeal, who suffered collapsed lungs and heart failure last fall and missed the Titans' final four games of 2004 hasn't been cleared yet to return to the playing field, Colbert says. But the coach is hopeful. "He's not getting cleared," Colbert said. "But it's like that is getting closer." ... A total of 125 players were on the field when Memorial opened preseason workouts Monday. The Titans expect 250 players in all when ninth-graders begin workouts next week ... Among those showing up Monday was offensive lineman Johnathan Vernon, who broke his wrist during spring training. "He's back, and that's going to help tremendously in terms of our depth on the offensive line," Colbert said. "And I believe we got a couple of more kickers over the summer, and that's going to really help a lot." ... Also joining the Titans are new coaches Bo Shahan, Dickie Robinson and Wayne McKeller and trainer Shawn Klinger, who will replace Memorial ninth-grade trainer Johnie McDonald, who retired. McKeller's son, Wiley, is the new offensive coordinator at Port Neches-Groves ... The Titans will put on full pads for the first time Friday and are scheduled for an intrasquad srimmage Saturday morning.

You might want to hold a few things back, because Round 2 is in the playoffs.

winning a game in aug or september pales in importance to the same match-up in the po's. good coaches recognize this and will prepare accordingly. we all respect outlaw, and ordinately so, but there does appear some little disapproval of colburn from the nickel seats.

I just talked with my aunt. School started today. Apparenlty word around the school and town is that if Colbert doesn't go REAL deep into the playoffs this year he will be FIRED.

I hope we have a re-match with them. I know it's over and done with but in that game Mouton did not catch a pass until our all-state CB Danny Gorrer sprung his ankle, that's when everything went down hill. They scored on the next play from scrimmage. I feel if he wouldn't gotten hurt not saying we would've won but the game would've been MUCH closer than its was.

It would be nice to see you guys beat Katy. I always think your drama with the Titans is funny, but I'd like to see them win. The worst case is PA ends up like the Dallas Mavericks. They had to keep Don Nelson an extra 3 years because he won when he had to.

Win or lose, this deal with PA Memorial is for one year only. Outlaw is not interested in making this a regular thing. It's a non-district affair that will mean little in the long run of this season, aka Katy in 2003. Lufkin whipped Katy 35-14 the first game of the 2003 season, but Katy goes on from there and wins 15 in a row to claim the 5A Division II title over Southlake, while Lufkin went home with a first round loss to Garland.
I don't highlight any of our pre-season games, unless it is somebody we may see later in the playoffs. That doesn't apply this year because P.A.M. and Eisenhower are 5A Division I possibilities, while Nacogdoches (why do we play these guys) is 4A.

I agree with that logic. The only thing the D2 teams do for me is to win and lose and affect Judson's position in the rankings. I care a lot more about Midland Lee, Euless Trinity, Tyler Lee, Westfield, North Shore, O'Connor, and Clemens than the D2 guys.

Don't remind me about 2003's first round loss. I hate playing Garland! I don't know what it is about them. It seems like they always bring out the worst in Lufkin.
As far as Nacogdoches, the only reason we play them is so we can have an extra week off! The last time they beat us was 1992, I think. I really don't like playing 4A teams unless it is a perennial powerhouse 4A.

I said COLBERT'S coaching. The rest of the coaches actually know what they doing out there. We are not gonna be D1, Westfield is in our district so if we actually get lucky and beat Katy this year in the playoffs maybe we might have a re-match from week 2. :D
