(Right now its raining in DFW alot of teams will have to cancel there after noon practices or move them into an Indoor place)

We had to have a helicopter land on our practice field on friday when we had a player dislocate his trachea after getting hit in the neck.

I played HS football in the late 80's. Not like that was that long ago but it's starting to slowly seem that way. Well, we've come along way with water hydration and the safety. When we had our 2-days in August, we would go like 45 minutes of busting butt and the water break was like a reward for putting out. We had like 3 to 4 kids a week go down with dehydration and and had to be dragged into the showers and everyone considered them "WEAK" for getting whoozy. "Wow" we've come along way and learned alot.
Looking back now as an adult and what we now know today,, its a dang total miracle that nobody died !!!

as far back as my senior year (99), we had three a days. I attended a private school, so we had the luxury to do that. We would not start school till labor day, so beginning in August we would report to school for 3 days of non-contact work, mainly issuing equipment, and a conditioning test, we also moved weights and our equipment onto a trailor to take out to camp copass on Lake Lewisville. We would spend three weeks at Camp Copass as a team practicing from 7:30-10:00, 2:30-3:30, and 6-8:30, each practice was broken down into periods, we would get water every 30-40mins or so, in all the years Liberty has done this, no one to my knowledge has ever gone down with a serious heat realted illness. Our mom's would come out everynight, and fill our individual coolers with gatorade and water, looking back it was the most fun I have ever had, there is nothing like spending 3 weeks with your teammates, bonding and coming together as a team.

I agree. When I played in the early 80's we had one water break, for 5 minute, about mid way through a two and a half hour proctice that consisted of a hand full of ice that you sucked on or ate before it melted in your hand. To say the least it was rough, but back them we didn't know any better and you sure didn't want to saying anything for fear of what the coaches might say or think of you if you did.
If you were lucky and the coaches didn't see you, a trainer might let you get a sip from a water bottle in between reps.
I know in Midland Lee's case, the coaches today had practice this morning at 8:00 AM till around 10:30 AM and then let the kids rest for about an hour then went back and had another practice late in the moring through early afternoon to avoid the heat.
Although I miss playing football, I sure don't miss two a days in August.

Right on !! 2 1/2 hour practice and about two 5 minute water breaks. The "ice" is funny too. I remember some of the water breaks basically be small pieces of "ice" to suck on. There wasnt enough water for the whole team.
I can only imagine how it must of been in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Watching the movie about Coach Bryant taking Tx A&M out to Junction, Tx. You know there was some sick boys out there on the edge of dying every day.

Texas Frog, speaking of Junction, Kenneth Hall once told me that Bear Bryant didn't allow water during practice or even an hour after. He also said that before practice they were given salt tablets. "It was a miracle that no one ever died" he said. Our fathers and grandfathers were tougher than will ever dream of being.

Wow !! Like I said, we've come along way in the last few decades realizing how important water is to the body. Especially in the "Dog days of August during 2-Days."
I played in the 80's which wasnt that long ago. The coaches looked at you like you were "WEAK" if you needed water and this was after you've been busting your butt for about 40 minutes none stop and already lost about 3 to 4 pounds of water in the body. In 3 years of varsity football, I bet we had 3 to 4 players every year passout from dehydration in August.
I'll agree with Kenneth Hall. Those players back in the 20's, 30's, 40's and even 50's were alot tougher overall then us. I honestly believe it. I dont think they're as athletic (size & speed) but I think they were TOUGHER.
They grew up in hardtimes and they didnt have the comforts that we have today (air condition and ect). Those were some mentally tough dudes back then. They just didnt know better. :)
PS. I still look at those old leather helmets and just shake my head.....

Oh so I guess sleeping indoors on a mattress is too. Give me a break. How does practicing indoors make someone a sissy or make a team a bunch of sissies? If your team plays and wins a state final game in the Astrodome or Alamodome will you be calling them State Champs or would you call them State Sissies for playing indoors?

Texas Frog,
You hit the nail on the head. The great Mr. Hall said with little or no air conditioning back then people were by nature more acclimated to the weather. He also said a lot of people had outdoor jobs and i think he would agree with you about today's athletes being bigger and faster. I recall a story specifically about him visiting the Tennessee Titans a few years back and he was mesmerized by Jevon Kearse. As the story goes, they were in the weight room and Jevon's position coach was on him about working out harder. Kearse said "Coach if i can pop that panel out, do I get out of working out today?" The coach reluctantly agreed and to Hall's amazement, Kearse vertical leaped high enough to knock out one of the ceiling panels 12 feet above his head. Hall said such players did not exist in his day and he himself was a freak of nature at 6'2 205 and running a 4.5 40. Back in the early 50's that was very rare.
Counting the days till the season kicks off...

Ya, some of my favorite family photos are of my Grandpa's and Great Uncles working in the Texas & Louisiana Oil fields back in the 30's and 40's. They were some hard tough looking men decked all out in muddy sweaty cloths. There is no doubt in my mind that the "MEN" of that era were tough hombres as a generation of "MEN."
They were some hard outdoor working men. I think most men back then were hard outdoor working men. They had the rough skin and blisters from their work.

Yeah it appears like they do. Kind of a silly comment for them to make huh. I look forward to watching SLC play on TV. Hopefully we can meet up again in the State Semi's.

That would be nice but I think it would be much more exciting to know that both of our teams had to earn the right to play each other once again in a State Semifinal. I am sure you would agree on that one. It will be an exciting year for both of our teams. One game at a time though.

You have never really practiced indoors then. Those indoor feilds the players use are just as hot as it is outside if not hotter. And I know in our indoor feild the surface is Astro turf which makes for some nasty burns, have that back in the day?
