Question - who is the last junior quarterback to win state in the 5a category? I can't recall - seems as though it's potentially been many years.

I believe that Graham Harell from Ennis won his junior year, was it '02?

Fairly certain you are correct - Graham did win, but it actually could have been his soph. year. I think Battle won as well his junior year - but both were 4A - I'm looking for the last 5A qb to win state as junior.

Matt Gore of Katy and Jon Rogers of Midland Lee did it in back to back years for 5A. Gore did it in 97 and Rogers in 98. It has been all seniors since those two.

Thanks KT - and let's admit the MLee qb had a little help in the backfield. Does go to show how important senior leadership is.

actually Rogers set a school record for passing yards and TD's as a junior, he threw for over 1700 yards, so I would say he did a heck of a job on his own.

Graham Harrell never won state as a junior or senior, he lost to James Battle as a Junior and to Highland Park in 03 as a senior. The numbers he put up in 03 are as impressvie as you will ever see, and he truly was a joy to watch during his highschool carrer.

1700 used to be nothing to sneeze at, but in a 15 game season, that is only 112 yds a game. not much for the numbers some guys put up these days. heck, had i been coaching a rb like benson, you'd have had to broken my arm to get me to signal in a pass play.

From ABC Sports website:
Berlin completed 290 of 477 passes during the 1999 season for 4,219 yards and 36 touchdowns.
That my friends is some massive numbers for a QB. Not from Texas, but still massive none the less.
Passing games are more fun to watch.

From the Texas Tech Website concerning Graham Harrell's senior season:
41-3 as a three-year starter ... passed for 4,825 yards and 67 touchdowns senior season ... completed 244-of-373 pass attempts ... led Ennis to undefeated regular season and 53.8 points per game ... holds state record for single-season passing touchdowns (54) ... seven 300-yard passing games in 2003 ... passed for 573 yards in win over Waxahachie, the third-best single-game total in state history,

Farmer, thats not bad at all. What school was he from? I bet that kid was fun to watch.. I wonder if there is any film of that one around anywhere. I would really like to see that...
from same abc site mentioned in earlier post: These were Berlins overall HS results (and I think they are correct)
Berlin completed 290 of 477 passes during the 1999 season for 4,219 yards and 36 touchdowns. He compiled a 45-0 record as a starting quarterback and ranked number two all-time in national prep history with 964 completions in 1,467 attempts (65.7%) for 13,902 yards with 145 touchdowns and just 33 interceptions. He led Evangel Christian to three state titles and was named Louisiana's 1999 Player of the Year by USA Today.

i think he is tied with wasson for the td record, if 54 is the record. chase had 4800+ his sr season.

I think Drew Tate (Baytown Lee, now at Iowa) still holds the state record for total passing yards in a career. I think he racked up over 12,000 yards but I'm not positive about that. He blew away the previous record.

Graham Harrell broke Tate's carrer passing record during the 03 season. Wasson did hold the record with 54, till the following year when Harrell tied it. Harrell ranks nationally in 3 categories, he is 2nd in TD's thrown in one season, 3rd in all time TD passes thrown and 6th in total passing yards.

Graham Harrell went to class 4A Ennis, he was a 3 year starter winning state as a sophmore, many believe he will become the NCAA all time leader in passing yards and TD's by the time he is done at Tech. He will most likely be a 3 year starter and possibly a 4 year starter if he can come back full strength this fall, he suffered a broken leg during spring drills.

This is somewhat of a trick question, but I'll throw a name out there and you can agree or disagree.
Joel Waldon in 2002.
He alternated drives with Dustin Quinney all year for Judson except the last drive in the title game.
Do I get a yay or a nay?

KT2000. That seems correct to me as well. To do that would require a pretty serious offensive unit all together. That would be amazing to see.
BTW, I got to watch the trailers you made. AWESOME. I am really glad you did that... Gets me all excited and acting a fool here at home. And, it gives me a good link to send home. I think Louisiana has a "get excited" problem sometimes.
I am still trying to make up my mind which game I will be attending for week "Zero".

I think Cody Hodge will be the starter at Tx Tech this season. I also think Cody Hodge will do very well this season ( if he stays healthy). His a solid athlete.
Its scary to think how good Harrell will be at Tx Tech once he takes the "keys" fulltime. No doubt his probably going to break some records.

Hodges is penciled in as the starter, and we all know once Leach makes a decision on a starter, he usually sticks with it. But Harrell should be a 3 year starter, and there is still a slim chance if he can come back a 100% for fall drills then he could push Hodges for the starting job. That said, even if he is a three year starter, he will put up huge numbers and most likely be the most prolific passer in NCAA history.
