Jesuit hopes to return to the area round of the playoffs with the help of (from left) Zach Packard, Barrett Bufkin, Charlton Messer and John Nwisienyi.
WHO ARE THE JESUITS: Members of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers dedicated to foreign missions, education and studies in the humanities and sciences.
HOME STADIUM (capacity): Haggar Stadium (4,000)
WHAT TO EAT: Carnival-style turkey legs, $2.50, barbeque beef sandwiches, $3 apiece or two for $5.
FAMOUS NONFOOTBALL ALUMS: Chris Donahue, 1998 Academy Award-winning producer of the live action short film Visas and Virtues; Terry Golden, President/CEO of Host Marriott Corporation.
TOP FOOTBALL ALUMS: J.D. Roberts, awarded the Outland Trophy in 1953 at Oklahoma; Charlie Arnold, quarterbacked Jesuit to its first win over a Dallas high school and later quarterbacked SMU; Jerry Pettibone, an all-state running back and former coach at Oregon State and Northern Illinois.
BEST TEAM EVER: The 1959 team finished 12-0.
THE TEAM
COACH: Bob Wunderlick (52-33 overall, 52-33 in eight seasons at Jesuit)
LAST SEASON: 10-2, 6-1 in District 10-5A, lost to Longview, 44-14, in a Class 5A Division II Region II area playoff.
HOLES TO FILL: RB Kyle McKissack (Kansas), WR/DB Chase Altman (Kansas), OL/DL Reggie Stephens (Iowa State), DL Sean Carney (Tulane) and QB Bryant Wilson (Trinity).
Difference makers
RB/LB Barrett Bufkin 6-0, 220, Jr. Overshadowed last season by Kyle McKissack's 2,211 rushing yards, 17 TDs
SS/RB Michael Clifford 5-9, 175, Sr. Had 56 tackles last season and will team well with Bufkin in offensive backfield
C/DT Charlton Messer 5-11, 260, Sr. All-district selection last season had 78 knockdown blocks
DE/FB John Nwisienyi 6-0, 225, Sr. One of the area's top defensive lineman had four sacks a year ago
DE/TE Steven Swenholt 6-2, 225, Sr. Second-year starter had 53 tackles (four for loss) last season
Impact newcomers
QB Jordan Perry 6-2, 185, Jr. Potential Division I-A recruit as a WR/FS, the positions he played last year on Jesuit's JV
FS Tyler Gatlin 6-1, 185, Sr. Varsity basketball player's first time to play football since the eighth grade
WR/FS Brandon Anderson 6-1, 170, Jr. Jesuit JV's most athletic WR/DB last season recently returned from a basketball knee injury
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
Jesuit's offensive line turns out to be as good as Wunderlick believes it will be. Jesuit returns two starters on the line and three others who played a lot last season. Though standout RT Reggie Stephens is now at Iowa State, center Charlton Messer and guard Brett Selly will provide a strong push for hard-running Barrett Bufkin.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Injuries begin to mount and opponents exploit Jesuit's lack of speed. Though Jesuit has a school-record 38 seniors out for the team, the depth of the second-year UIL program is thin because of a lack of varsity players. Jesuit won't outrun teams – its fastest player was clocked in the 40-yard dash in only 4.6 seconds.

THE TEAM
COACH: Johnny Ringo (52-32-2 overall, 5-6 in one season at Plano East)
LAST SEASON: 5-6, 4-3 in District 8-5A, lost to Duncanville, 28-0, in Class 5A Division I Region I bi-district playoff

G Markell Province 6-3, 220, Sr. Combination of good size, strength and quickness
WR Chris Morris 6-1, 180, Sr. Should figure more into the offense this season
Impact newcomers
OL Louis Finner 6-3, 290, Jr. Strong at run- and pass-blocking
DL Kevin Gilliam 6-2, 290, Jr. Coach Ringo likes his quickness and motor
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
Defense performs well. Plano East ranked seventh among eight teams in its district in total defense last season. This season, the defense should be a strength with eight starters returning. The secondary should be especially strong with Grundy and Ibewuike back.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Offense doesn't click. Plano East graduated one of the area's most explosive players in C.J. Ugokwe (1,627 rushing yards, 14 TDs). Massingale and Edmond will need to fill Ugokwe's shoes. Ringo is encouraged by the team's performance in 7-on-7 this summer and has an experienced quarterback returning in Noland.

overall the star telegram does not touch the DMN football preview, it has been award winning for many years now. I would love to see any newspaper in America that provides the quality of coverage dealing with High School, College and the NFL that the DMN does for its football preview. Even during the season the Morning News high school coverage is 2nd to none.

I don't normally subscribe to any newsprint, but when the DMN called last week and offered 13 weeks at 1/3 the newsstand price, I bit. I like it better than the Star Telegram even though I live in Tarrant County. The ST covers very few Dallas County schools while the DMN covers all schools in both counties. I also like the Houston Chronicle very much.

I agree with you.. The Dallas News covers High School football great. The Houston Chronicle also does a really solid job.
I've lived in San Diego,Ca (3 years), Va Beach, Va for (4 years), Miami, Fl (2 years). None of those areas has a paper that covers HIGH SCHOOL sports half as good as the two Texas major papers.
Its just another sign in my opinion that High school sports in Texas is taken very serious. :)

The DMN has been voted one of the 10 best sports sections for large newspapers for almost if not more than 20 straight years. Almost all those years they also won for a special they ran during the year and I've seen years when they won 3 majors.
It's not just football because they cover the other sports, too. The section is bigger than almost everybody else's. Look at the New York papers. They're smaller than Dallas and during baseball season, 80% of the coverage is for the 2 baseball teams. They don't do a good job when it's not baseball season.
Online, you can hardly beat how fast the DMN gets scores and stats in for football. The Chronicle is real good, too.

The history
WHEN THE SCHOOL OPENED: 1971
NICKNAME: Raiders
HOME STADIUM (capacity): Forester Stadium (10,000)
WHAT TO EAT: Big ol' turkey drumsticks served in aluminum foil for $3 each
FAMOUS NONFOOTBALL ALUMS: Ex-NBA star Larry Johnson, five-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson, country rapper "Cowboy Troy" Coleman, country singer Steve Holy, former MLB pitcher Chris Holt
TOP FOOTBALL ALUMS: Former Oklahoma and Chicago Bears LB Dante Jones, Atlanta Falcons DB/KR Allen Rossum, ex-Texas RB Hodges Mitchell
BEST TEAM: Skyline advanced to the 4A state semifinals in 1972 when it made its first playoff appearance. Its run included wins over Carter and Plano and ended with a loss to Odessa Permian. Skyline's only other playoff victory came in 1995.
The team
COACH: Reginald Samples (122-48-1 overall, first season at Skyline)
LAST SEASON: 7-4, 5-1 in District 9-5A, lost to Richardson Berkner in 5A Division I bi-district round
HOLES TO FILL: WR Mikail Baker (Baylor), WR Phillip Nevels (Louisiana-Lafayette), DE Garrett Fields (Arizona), RB Anthony Boykins (Central Michigan), WR/QB Kendrick Holloway (Kilgore JC), OT William Scott (Midwestern State)
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
LB/TE Michael Morgan 6-4, 200, Sr. Great at getting off blocks and makes big plays (18 sacks, 7 forced fumbles in '04)
CB Roderick Rollins 6-1, 170, Sr. Area's No. 54 recruit has scholarship offers from several BCS schools
RB/CB Lamonta Ward 5-10, 170, Sr. Averaged 9.7 yards per carry in limited duty last season; will start both ways
QB Anthony Norice 6-1, 177, Sr. Has the potential to be one of the area's most productive dual-threat quarterbacks
FS/WR Christian Scott 6-0, 185, Jr. Samples believes Scott will be one of the state's top recruits next year
DT Craig Singleton 6-2, 258, Sr. Must be active in opponents' backfields while 300-pound NT Kelvin McGee clogs up middle
IMPACT NEWCOMERS
DE William Abercrombia 6-3, 190, Sr. Allows Morgan to move from DE to LB
OT Phillip Gates 6-4, 300, Jr. Combines with 6-7, 370-pound Terrael Williams to form massive bookends
WR Brandon Davis 5-9, 160, Jr. Extremely explosive after the catch; will also be threat on motion sweeps
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
A big, inexperienced offensive line jells. Skyline is loaded with talent at the ball-handling positions, but the offense will sputter if the blocking isn't there. Samples wants Skyline to be a smashmouth team that mixes in some spread offense, so the line must be versatile. It's especially important to protect QB Anthony Norice, who missed most of last season because of a broken collarbone.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Skyline's defense, which is stocked with Division I-A talent, can't contain the option. A first-round playoff matchup with Richardson Berkner in the Division I bracket is basically a lock. Berkner rushed for 401 yards – 203 by QB Justin Johnson – in a 24-14 win over Skyline last season. Skyline has the players to stop the option, but it's difficult to prepare for after not seeing it all season.

That South Grand Prairie QB IS for real also. Last year on JV, he was a one-man show. He rushed for 340 yards and 3 TD's against our JV alone and threw 2 passes all game, but both of them were for 30+ yards and a touchdown. They only won 26-15, but they dominated us as our scores were on a fumble return and reverse-pass.
Here is how their JV did last year:
Summit: W 35-0
Sam Houston: W 27-9
South Garland: W 45-17
Nimitz: W 42-8
Grand Prairie: W 40-0

WHAT TO EAT: The "Stadium Apple." It's a Granny Smith apple covered in caramel in a cinnamon-sugar bowl.
TRADITIONS: The team always sings the school song on the bus as it pulls up to the front of the school on return trips from the stadium or away games.
TOP FOOTBALL ALUMS: QB Jordan Reever, holds every major Garland ISD passing record. Quincy Morgan, playing wide receiver for the Cowboys after being traded from the Browns last fall.

THE TEAM
COACH: Mickey Moss (78-45 in 11 seasons, 23-10 in three seasons at South Garland)

OL Nick Foster 6-4, 310, Sr. Recruiters like his size
OL A.J. Degroot 6-4, 265, Sr. Had strong summer camp season
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
Senior laden, but inexperienced, offensive line can meld together quickly. All five are starting full time for the first time this season. They'll need to protect QB Nathan Dick, who gained valuable experience in the playoffs last season. Speedy RB Charles Opeseyitan can be a game-breaker if the line paves the way.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
The defense can't improve on its numbers from last season. It will be a tough task considering only one full time starter returns. DT Kingsley Akinwole will anchor the front four. MLB Clayton Stewart and DB Nich Deniz also had substantial playing time last season. They'll be the defensive leaders.
THE NUMBERS

FB Justin Jackson 5-10, 182, Sr. Hard-running FB rushed for 290 yards, 5 TDs last season on 67 carries
IMPACT NEWCOMERS
CB/FB Josh Johnson 5-10, 175, So. Brother of starting QB has great speed and is expected to start at CB
TE/DE Kramer Lucio 6-5, 230, Jr. Should help Berkner at TE after the departure of Jason Lamb (Baylor)
WR Preston Martinez 6-2, 178, So. Has the height to provide a lift at receiver but must add speed
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
DE Ugo Chinasa continues to emerge, and Berkner finds replacements for its secondary. Many secondary and defensive line starters last season graduated. Chinasa must overcome likely double-teams to help keep the pressure off a young, unproven secondary.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Junior starting QB Justin Johnson suffers a serious injury. Johnson is the key to Berkner's triple-option offense. He had a hand in 15 TDs and rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season. Johnson will have to put up big numbers again to keep Berkner competitive.

I have to say I am somewhat shocked at South Garland and Allens rankings....
Teams left, I would guess: Euless Trinity, Carter, Irving Macarthur, Denton Ryan, Duncanville, Lewisville, Lake Highlands, DeSoto, Garland, Plano West, Arlington Lamar and of course... Southlake.
I say the top 5 are Southlake, Denton Ryan, Irving Macarthur, Plano West, and Euless Trinity. In no order.
I will keep everyone posted on the top 12."

I don't think that Plano West or Lewisville will make the list. I see Mansfield Summit and Irving High making it instead.
I would guess the remaining 12 teams to be Summit, Irving, SLC, Denton Ryan, Trinity, Irving MacArthur, Duncanville, Arlington Lamar, Carter, Garland, Desoto, and Coppell in no order. Lake Highlands or North Mesquite might make the list if one of the others(read Coppell) don't.
My picks for the top five in no order are SLC, Trinity, Garland, Irving, and Carter.
I see 6-5A as one of the strongest districts in the metroplex this year. If Coppell makes the list then 6-5a could have 5 teams in the DMN top 20.

Ive been reading from this site for awhile but was too lazy to sign-up...but I'm a senior at Garland. I heard from a friend who knows someone at Texas Prep Extra that Garland was #2...but dont quote me on that, because his source wasnt very reliable. Dont look at this as being a homer vote, because I hope that we are not that high. I expect us to be in the top 7 though, because last year we were 7, and we have more talent returning this year. SLC will most likely be one. I am curious where Desoto lands as they lost 9 to D-I. I think Irving Mac, Trinity, Summit, Lamar, Carter, and Garland are all very viable for the top 5, but only 4 of these six could be there.

Bell: W 26-15
Irving: W 59-0
MacArthur: W 28-12
Trinity: W 28-13
Coppell: W 21-7

Class 5A football countdown: No. 12 Mansfield Summit
09:29 PM CDT on Sunday, August 14, 2005
By MILENKO MARTINOVICH / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
THE HISTORY
WHEN THE SCHOOL OPENED: 2001
NICKNAME: Jaguars
HOME STADIUM (capacity): R.L. Anderson Stadium (7,000)
WHY IT'S NAMED SUMMIT: The school earned its name because the campus resides at a higher elevation than all the other Mansfield ISD schools.
WHAT TO EAT: Nachos are a staple at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
TRADITIONS: Summit players like to think of themselves as a blue-collar crew. So coach Kyle Geller brings an old, rusty lunch pail to practices and games to remind the team to work hard.
TOP FOOTBALL ALUMS: RB Kestahn Moore (Florida); WR Jarvis Minton (Wisconsin); LB Dean Hightower (Minnesota); DB Brian Nelson (North Texas); DT Issac Thomas (North Texas)
BEST TEAM EVER: The 2004 team got off to a horrid start, losing its first two games by a combined score of 59-14. But Summit went on a seven-game winning streak that helped propel it to the state quarterfinals.
THE TEAM
COACH: Kyle Geller (0-0 overall, first season at Mansfield Summit)
LAST SEASON: 9-4, 6-1 in District 4-5A, lost to Euless Trinity, 28-7, in Class 5A Division I Region I final
HOLES TO FILL: RB Kestahn Moore (Florida), LB James Lockett (Tulsa), LB Cofie Asare (Air Force), WR Chris Buckner (New Mexico State)
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
CB Jonathan Nelson 6-0, 180, Sr. He has orally committed to Oklahoma.
OL Kyle Smith 6-7, 300, Sr. Started all 13 games last season.
FB Phillip Smith 6-1, 185, Sr. Combines explosive speed and toughness.
DL Ryan Reeves 6-1, 235, Sr. Had three sacks last season.
LB Josh Zamora 5-11, 190, Sr. Can also play free safety.
IMPACT NEWCOMERS
RB Eric Parker 5-8, 160, So. Instinctive runner has shifty moves.
DE Anthony Bell 6-2, 235, Jr. Improved strength and athleticism over summer.
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
Summit stays healthy. This is the first season in Summit's brief history that a lack of depth is an issue. Only five starters return from last season.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Offensive line doesn't jell. Four of Summit's five projected starters have little or no varsity experience. The offensive line will have to provide lanes for running back Phillip Smith and protect quarterback Mike Crumbaker, a first-year starter.
THE NUMBERS
2004 offensive breakdown

6-5A is on of the best around

Yes I agree that Coppell might not make the list also.
I saw Coppell's game with Irving last year and was very impressed with their team. If they had just been able to corral Jamaal Evans a little more they could have won. The 7 point loss to Irving and 6 point loss to SGP was all that kept them from making the playoffs. I was very impressed with Coppell's returning RB Moody. He should have more help from the O-line this year. If the passing game develops well, the Cowboys could challenge for a playoff spot.

Running back race remains tight at Carroll
By TRAE THOMPSON
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER
SOUTHLAKE - Defending Class 5A Division II state champion Carroll continued preparing for its Aug.27 season opener against Midland Lee with an intersquad scrimmage Saturday morning.
Carroll coach Todd Dodge continues to be pleased with starting quarterback Greg McElroy, who was in for about 30 plays during the scrimmage at Dragon Stadium.
The running back position remains a tight race between senior Matt Moorefield, a backup last year to Aaron Luna, and sophomore Tre' Newton, the son of former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton.
Dodge said he would like to select a starter after this week's scrimmage at Sam Houston, but if there's no clear-cut leader, both will play.
Starting wide receiver Clint Renfro (broken collarbone) didn't play in Saturday's scrimmage. Renfro said he expects to be back for the opener with Midland Lee.

Yes he did drop out before graduating. I was SR.76 and I believe he would have been Sr.78, give or take a year. I remember him, he had an elective history class with me my Senior year and I passed him in the hallway. Very quiet and a quite the loner. Stayed away from everybody. Kept his head down and spoke only if completely necessary. We had him figured as a pot-head doper type and just avoided him, like he did us. When the Branch Davidian thing came down and the facts about him came out, those of us who remembered him weren't surprised about the whole thing. He totally fit the MO of that type of person.
As for him being a "Garland product", his mom was a transient type person and not all there, and she moved him around from school to school. He was only at Garland High for about half of one school year and half of another. We prefer to claim NFL stars Bobby Boyd, Randy Love, Karl Williams, Herkie Walls, NBA stars Ricky Pierce, Mookie Blaylock, and others as our "products".

Yep, that Mike Gandy. Notre Dame grad. Garland Senior 1996 I think. 5 year player at ND. 4 years in the NFL at Chicago. Went to Buffalo this off season and is the starting left tackle on the Buffalo depth chart. 6'3" 310 lbs now, was a 6'2" 260 lb tight end at Garland. In the Wing-T he was basically another lineman but he caught his share of key passes. Really nice HS player who made good. One of my all-time favorites at Garland.

Sorry bud, I had to do it. Other Garland high pros.
Chuck Dicus - went Arkansas as an all-american wide out. Played in The Big Shootout National Championship game between Texas and Arkansas in 1969. Was drafted by San Diego Chargers in 1971 and played 4 seasons.
Chock Sanders player every position possible for Garland and graduated in 1924. He ended up at SMU and was the first Garland and Southwest Conference player to declared an All-American. He could have easily been a pro, but chose to run the family farm instead as there was more money in being a farmer back then than playing pro ball.
Bobby Griffin was a fine all around player at Garland and in college and for many years was a lead scout for Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys.
Fred Harris, Sr.37, was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL, but played for the New York americans of the American Football League (not the AFL that became the AFC we know today) and played the 1941 season for them before joining the military during WWII.
Carl Brawley, Sr. 50?, was an extremely talented lineman who was drafted and signed by the New York Giants, but died in a car crash shortly before training camp.
There are a few others that I can't remember the names now. There have been about 5 or 6 more who played for one or more of the following, Canadian Football League, World Football League, and a couple of other small professional leagues that formed from the 70's till today, including the Arena Football League.
Sorry man, had to do it.
You might find the Garland Sports Hall of Fame web site to be interesting.

Class 5A countdown: No. 10 North Garland
11:07 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 16, 2005
By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News
THE HISTORY
WHEN THE SCHOOL OPENED: 1971
NICKNAME: Raiders
HOME STADIUM (capacity): Williams Stadium (10,000)
WHAT TO EAT: The barbecue sandwiches come highly recommended
TRADITIONS: The Raider Gun. Fans hold up a forefinger and thumb like a gun as a symbol of their spirit.
TOP FOOTBALL ALUMS: OT Joe Walter (Cincinnati Bengals); DB Jason Parker (Tennessee); DB Eric Bassey (Oklahoma).
BEST TEAM EVER: The 1989 team, coached by Joe Allen, was the first North Garland team to make the playoffs. Known for its effective Wing-T offense, the team advanced to the area round before losing to Lake Highlands at Texas Stadium. Coach David Farris said all North Garland teams are measured against the teams from that era.
THE TEAM
COACH: David Farris (32-40 in seven seasons overall, 19-23 in four seasons at North Garland)
LAST SEASON: 7-4, 4-2 in District 11-5A, lost to Longview, 49-27, in Class 5A Division II bi-district game
HOLES TO FILL: QB Adam Linwood (Hawaii), WR Marcus Franklin (Wyoming), WR Curtis Mayfield (Navarro), DL Danny Espitia (Midwestern State)
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
RB Donte Bean 5-10,185, Sr. Rushed for 955 yards, nine TDs on 162 carries
RB/WR Tyron Morrison 5-7, 160, Sr. Playmaker described by coach as "little piece of steel"

IMPACT NEWCOMERS

WR Hubert Anyiam 6-1, 175, Jr. FS Max's younger brother played hoops but no football last fall
LB Jermaine Love 6-0, 196, Jr. Made 42 tackles and a sack as a backup
Playing past Thanksgiving if ...
The inexperienced offensive and defensive lines jell. Only one starter returns on the defensive line, but the linebackers and defensive backs are proven. Only two starters are back on the offensive line.
Early Christmas shopping if ...
Injuries take a toll. North Garland's starting lineup is impressive, but there isn't much depth. Farris considers it North Garland's biggest weakness. North also needs to answer questions at wide receiver after graduating two standouts.
THE NUMBERS

This one really caught me by suprise. I had all the remaining spots picked except one. I thought that it might be filled by Coppell, Lake Highlands, or North Mesquite. I figured that with South Garland at #16, North would be out of the top 20. Makes the match-up between North and South in week 10 look pretty interesting.

Wow. I Am Shocked. Totally Shocked! I had a friend that was talking to a DMN sports writer and he was saying how he thinks North Garland is the best team in the district. Maybe Garland is not ranked.....

Also about the Fodge thing, heard the whole story......
Fodge was taking this girl back to her house and came in the house to make sure she got in ok. The girls ex was hiding in a closet and came out and tried to start stuff with the girl. He told Matt to just turn around and leave it between them and when Matt turned around he hit him with a baseball bat. I heard he missed his graduation because of it. But yeah he is the kicker for OSU. You also have the kicker for UT- Magee graduated from Garland in 01.

I coached Desmond Quinnones and Tyrone Morrison in baseball. Tyrone was the fastest 14 year olds I ever saw. Both eventually quit baseball but I still contend that if Desmond wanted to pick it up again, that kid could easily get a baseball scholarship. He was quiet a talent. He had a pick off move to second base that could throw out just about anybody.

They're ranked...
NG is really good. This really doesn't surprise me. Remember, they had us beaten last year before the play at the goal line in OT (was that Murphy who made that play?).
Fodge is doing fine and may get the kickoff job at OSU as a true freshman. Great kid, deserves good things...
garlandowl08
08-17-2005, 03:51 PM
OH, i didnt realize Fodge would be playing...thats really good for him...i hope Garland is and isnt ranked I want a ranking cause I think we deserve respect and I think we'll win the district. I dont want a ranking cause I dont want us to get a big head, and I think every team tries that much harder as the underdog...oh the dilemma!
GoOwls
08-17-2005, 07:20 PM
I'm shocked only that the paper actually asked itself some of the same questions I've been talking about all off season. Namely, what is South gonna do to replace the "key" players they lost (Kent mostly), who is gonna chunk the ball to those wide outs when you got a running QB, how in the world will they create enough time for a running QB to find himself in the posket and find the wide outs before top line defenses crush them? Among other questions. THe fact that they are searching high and low on the JV and Frosh teams for a passing QB speaks volumes.
No, I'm not surprised, I'm feel my concerns have been confirmed.

the home side is 3-4 times the size of the visitors, so the difference would be in the ability of those other than hpers, who are very prone to sit on the visitor side too, to attend the games. the stadium is quaint to the point of making visitors wish they had stayed home. maybe that's the idea.

I'm with owlfan1, I've heard rumblings about Garlands depth taking them all the way. 39 lettermen, 11 starters, 63 man roster and only 2 are sophmores. Probably the most deep and experienced team since the 1964 state team. I predicted earlier this summer that if we get by the first round that I liked us for state and I'm sticking by it. Garland will be #2 or #3 in the DMN poll.

Well Garland is in the top 5......
Tough roads await Plano East, Garland
06:07 PM CDT on Saturday, August 20, 2005
Johnny Ringo received quite a present when he was hired at Plano East: perhaps the area's most difficult nondistrict schedule.
A home game against North Mesquite is sandwiched by trips to area top-five programs Garland and Southlake Carroll. A winning record entering District 8-5A would be a miraculous feat for Plano East, still a solid program but not the power it used to be.
Ringo will probably have to play psychologist to keep his team's head up after taking some early lumps. Ringo admitted that the defense never was the same after being shredded by Carroll last season. That's why Plano East would be better served playing second-tier teams.
Garland, on the other hand, could use its brutal schedule as a springboard to a state title. And it's one of a handful of teams that can argue it has a tougher slate than Plano East.
Coach Jeff Jordan wants his team to be tested in playoff-type atmospheres. Friday's opener against Plano East followed by trips to DeSoto and Ennis and a home game against Carter will provide a good facsimile.
Garland has the experience to handle the grind and needs challenges. You better bring a take-on-all-comers attitude when a first-round rematch against defending 5A Division I champion Tyler Lee is all but set in stone.

The more I think about it, Garland could be the surprise #2. If the thinkers think they can put together a real passing threat, along with that winged T running game with Sloan (and others), the defense speaks for itself. Thats a tough formula. Its intersting that the Owls are not mentioned in the top 20 in some other polls (Dave Campbell). Somebody is wrong!

The team, coached by Ed Hickman, started 1-3 but caught fire when Lee Shiflet was inserted at QB in the fourth game. No suprise here if you were at the scrimmage last Friday. Defense wins championships and Trinity's D is not there YET but it'll get there hopefully
3 very good football teams took the field and man they were hitting hard out there. Well, lets get down to what you really want to know.
1st Teams Only:
TRINITY vs MIDLAND 2 - 2 TRINITY vs CARTER 1 - 1
MIDLAND vs TRINITY 2 - 2 MIDLAND vs CARTER 1 - 1
ROY'S BOYS, LoL, 2nd Teams:
TRINITY vs. MIDLAND 0 - 2 TRINITY vs CARTER 1 - 2
MIDLAND vs TRINITY 2 -0 MIDLAND vs CARTER 0 - 2
TOTALS:
T(1s)= 3-3 T(2s)= 1-4 total 4-7
M(1s)= 3-3 M(2s)= 3-2 total 6-5
C(1s)= 2-2 C(2s)= 4-1 total 6-3
Now for the team Summaries
Trinity - didnt play their 2 good running backs for some reason especially in a good scrimmage verse two good teams. Their Offense looked good still although their run game was very poor they were effective with their play action at times. Speed was very limited and their O-Line was not as impressive as in years past. To speak of their Defense is a waste of time, but its early, they have none. They need alot of work, they couldnt slow down either team. Midlands spread offense disected them and Carter's wing-t pounded on them. Trinity's O will have to carry them because their D is not there right now.
Midland - came along way to play a scrimmage but they came to play. They looked very impressive and could be a team to be reckoned with. Faster than what I expected especially their QB, RB(1), RB(2), & their Defense. They played good solid Defense and their Offense was good also but they had some problems with the speed and size of Carter but they held their own for the most part. They brought some fan support & alot of players. They will be a good team to follow.
Carter - I like what I saw with this team. They were physical and fast. They started off slow but they finished the scrimmage as the dominant team. They scored at will on both teams after looking like they were flirting with some spread. Yes people, Carter and spread sounds strange. I guess the coaches said enough was enough and mixed both offenses spread and wing-t in the scrimmage. Their Defense was solid except for 2 big plays, who is #81, he played LB for them and he was hitting and they had some Ends that looked good also. Their Offense is big, fast & physical and I like they play their players on both sides of the football. Oh, and their QB, well you will see
1 - Carter...Good,Physical,Fast Defense & Offense could make a run this year
2 - Midland...Good Offense & Good Defense
3 - Trinity...RBs didnt play but their Defense is not there

The more I think about it, Garland could be the surprise #2. If the thinkers think they can put together a real passing threat, along with that winged T running game with Sloan (and others), the defense speaks for itself. Thats a tough formula. Its intersting that the Owls are not mentioned in the top 20 in some other polls (Dave Campbell). Somebody is wrong!
;)

Why are you worried about where Garland is ranked? The Colonels will get a chance to prove how overrated the Owls are in October. Don't let some DMN writer's opinion ruin your whole day. :D
Two more days! Can you believe it! Good luck against PW...

John Bosch actually participated in the offseason program and spring ball my freshman year. He was a good guy. If I remember correctly he was one of the fastest guys on the team and played safety and reciever often paired with me. Very good hitter for a guy his size. Don't know if he left for the Power Rangers or what, but he was headed for playing time I thought. We had lots of guys quit between spring ball and the first game that year, but the resulting team ended up in the playoffs for the first time in years. Think Garland has missed the playoffs only once since then. Don't know who to credit with Garland's good streak: Coach Martin, DeSoto or John Bosch :D .

How about North Garland being ranked alot higher than South Garland too..... I do think though that this is the first year to have 2 Garland teams in the top 10 and 3 in the top 16. I know when we had North Mesquite and Mesquite... they were always in there too. I think one time it was Mesquite, North Mesquite, Garland, and Rowlett in the preseason top 20.

I know when we had North Mesquite and Mesquite... they were always in there too. I think one time it was Mesquite, North Mesquite, Garland, and Rowlett in the preseason top 20.
In '94 in the span of 3 weeks you had:
Week 4
Area:
Mesquite #1
Garland #2
North Mesquite #6
Week 5
North Mesquite #2
Garland #3
Mesquite #5
Week 6
North Mesquite #2
Garland #3
Mesquite #10
In the state:
Week 4
Mesquite #2
Garland #9
Week 5
North Mesquite #6
Mesquite #8
Garland #9
Week 6
North Mesquite #6
Garland #9
Mesquite unranked.
Then all hell broke loose.
- Mesquite was the district favorite that year and were ranked highly in the national polls
- Mesquite v North Mesquite was a huge showdown, but Mesquite was heavily favored. North Mesquite pulled out all the tricks including a long swinging gate touchdown, and whipped Mesquite pretty good.
- The next week we(Garland) faced Mesquite. Got in a pregame fight, and jumped out to a big lead at the half. Mesquite came back and we held them off to squeak by
- Week 9, NM inexplicably loses to Lakeview(who proved to be a great team the next year)
- Last regular season game, we tied North Mesquite in a really good game.
- All three teams lost in the first round, LOL, to Plano(Mesquite), Plano East(NM) and Lake Highlands(Garland)
who was #1 in the area at that time? I believe it was The Colony, Plano East or Plano. Gotta check my tapes again. That year, the top 5 was almost always Plano, Plano East, Garland, The Colony and North Mesquite, With teams like Carter and Mesquite making appearances. The Colony lost in the first round that year. That Plano East team is the one that lost to John Tyler in "The Game". OF course JT went on to win division II. Plano won Div I. There were three teams that were up and coming that year. Garland, Lake Highlands(new qb named Stiggers, LOL) and the Marcus Marauders. All made giant leaps to elite status in their districts and all made deep runs the next season. Always interesting to look at who was powerful then compared to now. Some schools have been very consistent even since then. Others have come and gone.
