USC Player Has Positive Steroid Test

Brandon Ting, a USC defensive back who unexpectedly left the program last week, had tested positive for steroids, sources said Tuesday.
On Friday, USC announced that Ting and his twin brother, Ryan, also a defensive back, had decided to stop playing football so they could concentrate on preparing for medical school. The Tings, who are seniors, played mainly as back-ups and on special teams last season.

Brandon Ting could not be reached for comment.
Asked if Brandon Ting had tested positive for steroids, Coach Pete Carroll said, "I can't comment about any of these allegations, about his personal deal."
Carroll said athletes in all sports are tested randomly for drugs and steroids throughout the year.
Brandon and Ryan Ting are the sons of Arthur Ting, a Bay Area orthopedic surgeon who has operated on several professional athletes, including Barry Bonds. Arthur Ting has reportedly appeared as a witness before a grand jury considering possible perjury charges against Bonds.
Brandon and Ryan Ting graduated a semester early from James Logan High in Woodside, Calif., and enrolled at USC in the spring of 2003. Both graduated from USC last spring with degrees in American studies and ethnicity, earning grade-point averages above 3.8
The twins participated in spring practice and also in summer workouts. But less than a week before today's reporting date for the start of training camp, the school announced they would not play this season.
In a statement released by the school Friday, Ryan Ting said, "For the past 3 1/2 years, Brandon and I have been able to balance the demands of football and academics. Now, as our focus turns toward medical school, we realized it was in our best interests to end our playing careers. We realized we couldn't balance both if we want to be serious about med school."
Brandon Ting appeared in all 13 games last season, made 12 tackles and intercepted a pass.
In an interview that appeared on the WeAreSC.com website Monday, the Ting brothers said they began to consider leaving the program in January. They said they were enrolled in a post-baccalaureate program at USC to prepare for medical school.
"Ultimately, we want to be remembered as people who did what they could for the team in any which way or form and had fun doing it," Brandon Ting told the website. "We want to be remembered as hard workers who, when given the opportunities, did what they could to help the team. Our teammates know who we are and I'm sure, based on the relationship we've had with the fans, they know who we are as people, too. Hopefully that will take precedence over some of the negative experiences we've had."
Ryan Ting said he had received death threats after the Rose Bowl game because he failed to intercept a pass thrown by Vince Young late in the game.
According to NCAA rule 14.1.1.1, "A student-athlete who is found to have utilized a substance on the list of banned drugs, through a positive drug test administered by the NCAA shall be declared ineligible for further participation in postseason and regular-season competition."

uhh...different stupidity...but a result that may land a kid in jail, compared to an idiot simply being booted from the team, isn't the same, IMO!

That was not bad news because RT was a troubled individual who was given every opprotunity to turn away from his troubled past and those trying to pull him down, but he failed to do so. Besides, we knew RT wasn't going to be on the team for months now.

Plus, Texas has several options to replace RT. OU has nada, at least for this season.

are you serious? you may have "known" for a months, but it was officially announced a week or two ago!
bomar and quinn was in trouble, in the past, as well. to say it wasn't bad news for tu, when taylor got busted and now kicked off, is pretty hypocritical! tu lost its' first and second most productive offensive players, this past year...taylor being one of them! (vince the other!)
how is that "not bad news"?!

Ramonce hasn't been an official member of the team since just after the Rose Bowl and it was common knowledge even then that his academics could prevent his return this Fall. RT hasn't even been a student at The University of Texas since Christmas break. He didn't practice this Spring and when he was arrested back in May, Mack all but said he wouldn't be back. We have known RT wouldn't be playing for Texas for months now. We were not blindsided by the news around lunch time yesterday.

Scoring TDs is not worth having a punk on the team. The bad news would have been if he would have been allowed to return despite his troubled ways just because he could score a few TDs.

You said it was "not bad news"! Losing any player that has contributed as much as bomar and taylor - regardless of fan opinion - is "bad news"! (blindsided or not!) So, IMO, losing Taylor was bad news! (
And yes, keeping a player based on his football talent and worth, alone, is also bad news!

I said it wasn't bad news because we have known about it for so long. RT hasn't been a Texas Longhorn since the Spring semester started back in January. There was some speculation here and there, but the bottom line was that he was not on the roster, Mack said he was not on the team, he was not enrolled at The University and other players were given all of his touches in the Spring. Shipley, The Quan, Colt, Jevan, Jamaal, Hank the Tank, Finley, etc. all prepared this Spring for life without RT so life without RT now is no different than it was when there was no RT 4 months ago.

uhh yeahhh...it's different than last season, which is what counts, IMO! look, i get what you're saying, but it's still bad news to not have second most offensive productive player, from last season, back this season!
i think it's worse news to lose your starting qb a month before the season! therefore must, now, depend on a converted qb-receiver-qb!
we'll see!

Texas losing R. Taylor hurts. There aint no doubt about that. But, Texas has several players to offset that loss and in the long run I dont think it's going to hurt that bad.
But, UO losing their returning starting QB just a few weeks before game 1 is a "MAJOR BLOW". Especially when they really dont have a quality backup.
Plus, throw in the O-line situation (and loss of a quality O-lineman) and ect. Major blow to the UO program.

I understand what you are saying, but you have to understand that I am in the camp that doesn't feel RT's offensive production will be hard at all to replace. IMO, his loss will be seen more on kick returns than anything else.
Last year, RT caught 265 yards worth of passes and 3 TDs while posting a 9.8 ypc which was by far the lowest among receivers with at least 10 catches. Meanwhile, The Quan who was a true freshman who had been away from football for 4 years caught 270 yards worth of passes and posting the second best ypc mark on the team with 18 ypc and he did that despite not really playing until mid-way through the season. Thrown in Shipley, and RT's receiving production won't be missed at all. RT wasn't even going to be a starter.
RT did rush for 530 yards and 13 TDs, but Hank the Tank rushed 432 yards and 10 TDs. Just by the numbers, that would make Hank the 4th most productive player last year. Does anybody really believe that Hank the Tank was the 4th most productive player last year? Of course not. Besides, the only reason RT even saw any carries was in junk time the first few games and then to fill in for Selvin and Jamaal when they were banged up. Jamaal is a year older and more experienced after an outstanding freshman campaign and Selvin is a a year older and healthy. Thrown in Vondrell McGee who will make up for anything RT did running the ball IMO and RT's loss doesn't look hard to take at all. Same as with the WR position, RT wasn't going to start here. He was depth and a "plan C" option.
