This is a Valley Newspaper counting down the days til football season begins in which they feature a different football team everyday from the area. Today they talk about Harlingen South. Well it seems that the 1995 Harlingen football team was "robbed" by San Antonio Roosevelt and the officials in a playoff regional game. The same 1995 Roosevelt squad that went on to win state over nationally ranked Flower Mound Marcus and their all everything quarterback. The same Roosevelt squad that went 16-0 and featured 2 future NFL players. The funny thing about this is that someone is quoted in the paper saying that the 1995 title actually belongs to Harlingen South. Which obviously means this person believes that they would have won 2 or 3 more games against very very good teams as Roosevelt did. To me this is a slap in the face to Flower Mound Marcus, Roosevelt and whoever Roosevelt beat in the semis. Here is the quote:
South’s dream season ended a week later in a controversial (at least in Harlingen) 27-17 loss to San Antonio Roosevelt in the Region IV semifinals. Roosevelt went on to win the state title, a fate some at South believed belonged to them.
"We should have won state," Harlingen school district athletic director Chipper Zamora said. "We had some bad calls against San Antonio Roosevelt in Corpus Christi. That group of kids was a great group. We beat Victoria. Victoria at the time was a big powerhouse football-wise. We beat them, and we should have beat San Antonio Roosevelt, but that’s the way the ball bounces."
Although the ending came too soon for the Hawks, the ’95 team holds a special place with the architect of the program’s beginnings.
"The 1995 team just had a great chemistry and had some great kids on it," Leal said. "The chemistry on that team was just fantastic. The kids believed they could win it all. The team that beat us, Roosevelt, they won it all. They beat us 27-17 and we had two touchdowns called back. By all rights we probably should have gone (to the regional final)."
The other thing that I find funny is that this person refers to Victoria as a powerhouse.
