On paper, the Longhorns are in a great position to keep doing that. They have most of the starters back from last year’s 14-0 team and enter their Sept. 2 season-opener against North Texas with a 20-game winning streak.
One would think a repeat would be the only suitable follow-up. But even Brown admitted life without quarterback Vince Young will bring some very big changes.
“After Vince left, it changed our position nationally,” he said. “If he had returned, people would have thought we have a great chance to repeat. Now we’re not even picked to win our division.”
OU was the media’s overwhelming pick to win the Big 12 South. Besides most believing the Sooners will return to national championship contention, Texas’ quarterback situation creates more doubt.
Redshirt freshman Colt McCoy and true freshman Jevan Snead are vying for the job. But neither has played a down.
It was one question Brown doesn’t have an answer for.

Leave it to a paper from the world's largest trailer park to get such a simple fact wrong. Texas was 13-0 last year. They will be 14-0 this year.

oh no, they think tu's monsterous defense and sophmore rb is going to carrying them all the way to the title! all the while, experienced qb's at colleges like michigan, OU, ohio state, oregon, NOTRE DAME, FLORIDA, louisville, and many more will have to wait in line, behind tu, considering they've returned most of their key stars/starters, of whom made it possible to win a nc title, in the first place!;)
but, over here, in reality...the "main reason" they won the title just signed a $58-million dollar contract to play for the titans, this morning!:D

It's funny that you should mention the likes of Michigan and Florida since both of their current QBs led their respective teams to outstanding records their true freshman seasons. Michigan's Chad Henne taking his team to the Rose Bowl and Florida's Chris Leak taking his team to the Outback Bowl in a season that could have been even better had it not been for all the inexperience at key positions on that team (7 true freshman started for Florida that year). Those two are among many that have set a precedent for true freshman QBs that Colt/Jevan will continue.
It may not mean National Championship, but it doesn't have to just yet. Colt and Jevan are young, but so is everybody else on the offense. Outside of the O-line Texas has just one senior skill position player expected to contribute a great deal and that is Selvin Young. All the WRs and all the young RBs (not to mention several linemen) will be back in 2007.

I'd just be satisfied to watch them lose on October 28th!:D

You'll have to excuse me if I hope they do, but I'm going to reserve my serious smack for a while. I want to see how the QBs do this fall, against UNT and especially against Ohio State. If good things happen, I'm going to be one tough SOB to be around for a while. :D

Don't worry about intimidating me, jtk, I haven't feared anything or anyone since I was in 3rd grade...and that was my mom, getting after me with a "peeled switch". Ouch! :D
I will look forward to a cold crow sandwhich, with a side order of "told-you-so" and a 44oz of "say something ELSE!"...if ut explodes for a repeat of last year!;)

now jtk, you are often the least little bit that way at present. if you had to guess, who'll end up starting at qb by rrs? i'm thinking snead, who has the looks of the real deal. he's got a little gun slinger in him.

That's a tough question that I keep going back and forth on. As of right now, I think Colt gets the start for one very big reason... experience.
I know Colt has never started a game, but he spent an entire year learning from Vince and learning the system. That experience will pay off in the RRS because he has seen how to beat Mobilhoma's DB blitz and that is so critical.
That blitz killed Simms and even Applewhite to a degree. The coaches did some things last year that they have never done in the RRS and it paid off beautifully. Vince executed them, but he didn't do anything special. The first TD pass to RT is the perfect example...
http://s88027846.onlinehome.us/UTvOU05-RamonceTaylor-TD(DivX).avi
That was a called play that recognized the blitzing safeties and the fact that the CBs were playing one-on-one, bump-and-run coverage on the WRs. It was a timing based play that used the play action to try and freeze the MLBs and draw the blitzing safeties inside. The ball was then released before the blitzes could get there. Since the CB was playing on the LOS, all Vince had to do was lob the ball up. You'll notice that the ball was in the air before RT even cleared the CB. If RT could get past the CB, it was a sure TD. If he couldn't, no harm since there is no way the CB could have made up enough ground to make a play and there was no help behind him.
You'll see close to the same thing here, but the CBs aren't playing quite as aggressive and the play is designed to go to one of the slot receivers...
http://s88027846.onlinehome.us/UTvOU05-BillyPittman-TD2(DivX).avi
This play was a little more dangerous because #18 Lewis Baker was back in coverage, but the defense was one-on-one and Baker was preoccupied with the TE (who was actually lined up as a 5th receiver) so he didn't have a chance to come over an make a play on the ball. Once again, because this is a timing based play, the ball is in the air before Pittman even turned his head so the CB didn't have much of a chance. Vince under-threw the pass some. Had he led Pittman the way he did RT, this play would have looked every bit as easy as RT's catch.
I use those plays because none of the players really did anything special. The plays were drawn up and designed to do what they did and the players executed. Beating that blitz caused the Mobilhoma defense to play a little more conservative blitzing with the LBs more than the DBs. The problem was that the front 7 just couldn't get past Texas' O-line and Vince had all day to sit back there and pick the secondary apart.
Colt or Jevan are very capable of throwing those balls and running plays like that. I say Colt has the slight advantage because he was there preparing last year. He was running those very plays in practice and he saw how they are executed. He just has to do it. If he can execute plays like that and beat the blitz, Venables will back off some and that opens up a whole world of opportunities... the running game, short passes, etc. Mobilhoma lives and dies by that blitz. If you neutralize it, that defense is very beatable.
For the sake of comparison (and using their high school days and Spring game as a reference), Sneed is a "Brett Favre" type QB because he has a very strong arm, but also because he's a gambler. You'll never accuse Jevan of being timid. He has no problem being aggressive and that can be great, but it can also backfire. Colt is a "Jake Delhomme" type QB because nothing about him will wow you, but he is very consistent and steady. He gets the ball to the playmakers, protects the football, manages the game and succeeds. Can't go wrong with either guy, but I think Colt, as of right now, is the "safer" player.
