View Full Version : What makes your team so special?

I thought I would start a thread to see what makes your HS football team so special.
It's great seeing everyones opinion on many subjects. I do not make many posts but I visit this website many times a day.
I think it's great for anyone who supports a high school football team, it's fun to talk about them and here what others think. Take your pick of any of the state "powers" past and present and you'll most certainly see some fans that have a lot of pride and they are very hurt when somone runs them down. How many times has the Southlake fans heard from so many fans from other powers that could have beaten them if they had played each other. I'm afraid a lot of times in our enthusiasm we come off sounding arrogant and hey, that's going to happen sometimes.
I graduated from Euless Trinity as you might have guessed and I love high school football. Every year I think that this will be the year when we make it all the way and of course this year is no exception.
So why is ET so special? Start with the O-line, Euless has one of the highest concentration of the Tongan people outside the island. Football is a favorite amoung the Tongans in Euless and (with all respect) they usually have size that is good for football. It only makes sense that for an o-line, size has it's advantages. Our o-lines get some respect as being good but not so much from college recruiters since they are looking for linemen that are 6'5" and 320 not 6'2" or 6'0"and 320 and that seems to be an average for our o-lines. We had a guy last year that was 5'8" and 376 that played tackle and he could really move. Remember these guys didn't get large in High school they have been large all their lives so they can really move it. You can go to the elementary schools or laundrymats to see that Trinity will have size for many years to come. This year is a little differnt since the starters will be a little smaller on average than in some past years. It's not that ET doesn't have the size on the team but that it looks like the best players this year are not the biggest. This years starters will average 290lbs and quicker. If the starter gets hurt then we can bring in the size as backups.
Last year was so special for me, we had a great o-line and had some speed and talent at running back. To be honest, I think the real difference last year was the ability to pass the football. When your o-line opens up the defense your going to be able to run the ball. It's when the defense commits so many to stop the run that you need to pass. In the years past, ET had some trouble passing but last year it wasn't a problem.
I always thought that if ET had more speed they could get over the hump and win it all. The speed has arrived and more than I ever imagined. It arrived slowly over the last 4 years and this year will feature the most speed yet. Our tight end and wr's will be great, QB R. Taggert is a great passer.
the backfield will feature a 250lb lead blocker and a transfer from Georgia named Justice Campbell. ( he has returned to Texas and is the cousin of our WR Marcus King) You might imagine since his name is Campbell who he is compared to. No way should anyone put that comarison on a hs kid. He does have good size and speed. I'm sure that there are other players on the team that will compete for the starters job.
ET's defense should be as good as it has been in many years. There is some speed in the secondary and D-line.
Like I said above, we all think our team will make it to the end and I am no exception.
The only disappointing thing about last year was that we faltered and lost a game and when we won the championship many people questioned their greatness. Having the two divisions in 5a has it's faults since you end up with two champions. So the debates continue as to whether your team could have beaten Trinity last year or not. Maybe this year, now that there will be equal amounts of teams in each division, the debates will have a little less validity.

22 Seniors starting at CyFalls High School.
13 to 14 of those seniors have already played in an amazing 28 varsity football games.
Senior leadership with lots of experience....and a QB named Jeff Welch.
SEE YOU IN DEFEAT AS YOUR TEAM WILL BE EAGLES MEAT

They have me as a fan!:D
OK, they just never quit. They're not without talent and win many games with better talent, but their deep playoff runs almost always have them playing and beating a team with more talent. They don't always win, but they just keep getting better and better throughout the year. I really appreciate a team that takes punches and keeps getting up. They don't always have a great record because they play tough teams in non-district, always have a tough district, and they don't always start the year firing on all cylinders. All I care about is a team that keeps winning playoff games and nobody has been better in 5A. In the last 26 years, which is the 5A era, they've played:
10 games- Four times and missed the playoffs
11 games- Two times (Lost to one state finalist)
12 games- Two times (Lost to one state finalist and one semifinalist)
13 games- Never
14 games- Six times
15 games- Ten times
16 games- Two times
8 of 26 years with 13 or fewer games (Season ends before Thanksgiving) and 18 of 26 years with 14 or more games (Season ends in December). In the best 18 years, you can include 6 titles, 10 title games, and 15 semifinals. THAT'S SPECIAL!:D

Well at least there was 2 great seasons of 13 games played in 1951 and 1952.

Good post TrinityTrojan80! I am also a graduate of Trinity. I think the thing that makes Trinity special is that we do more with less. I graduated in 1986.
We are still using the same weight room with the same equipment. We do not have indoor practice facility or anything that modern or fancy. We have a couple of newer toys, such as a passing machine; but that is it. With so little compared to other schools, I'm amazed we have done so well over the years.
One of my favorite things is the cohesiveness and family like atmosphere of the team. I believe Coach Lineweaver is partly responsible for this, as he seems to care about each player as an individual. The kids on the team are also responsible for the family like atmospere as well. In particular, The Tongan and Samoan players and family believe that friends are part of the family. I still to this day feel like alot of my Tongan and Samoan friends are family. I don't know this for a fact, but I am willing to bet that Trinity is the most ethnic and racially diverse schools in the Metroplex. I believe alot of our strength and cohesiveness is within the diversity. Each ethnic and racial group is represented on the team, and everyone looks out for eachother. It is not just on the field that everyone looks out for eachother. Everyone looks out for eachother in the classroom as well. I talk to one of the cornerbacks, as an example; and was asking him how another one of the players is going to do on his grades, and he let me know that everyone is looking out for him, and helping him out. There are so many other ways that these kids, and Coach Lineweaver look out for eachother that I couldn't possibly post them all. I will say that it is something very special. I believe that these are things that these kids will be albe to take with them for the rest of their lives.

Lufkin has 109 wins, 31 losses, and 1 tie since 1995. This is when Coach Outlaw became the Head Coach. I think he has changed the attitude at Lufkin from hoping to win, to expecting to win. Then you get the following that Lufkin has and to me that translates into at least a score for the offense or a miscue from the other team resulting in a defensive TD nearly every game. Very few teams can say that they have the crowds at every game that Lufkin does. To me that is what team sports are all about.

In JT's case, their ability to return to competitiveness after 3 HORRIBLE YEARS under a ******* and with people always saying how they could never win again. JTproved everybody wrong. People kept saying that REL was too strong and that JT was a dead program. Great coaching from Brooks showed the truth. JT's ability to resurrect their program iss what makes them special imo.

Hardy Har Har! I can't even remember all of Katy's wins without looking it up. I'm sure one of our less ancient bretheren will post it when they wake up and get out of bed. I don't live too much in the past. I always look forward to the next season. Each team has it's own personality. By Feb./Mar. I'm over a win or loss at a State Title game and looking forward to the next season.
Of course, what makes Katy special is my presence at the games!:D
Actually, Katy is special because of the way the whole community gets behind the football team. Even though we are getting engulfed by Houston you still get that small town flavor where the towns hero's are on the football field on Friday nites.

I think tradition does have a lot to do with it. When you are expected to do well, you don't want to dissappoint anyone. A great fan base is also very important like in Lufkin.
So what is the biggest reason for a winning tradition, talent has to be a big one. Permian has on of the most storied past and where as I believe they had talent, there was something else, maybe there was some MoJo?
I hope that Permian can make a comeback, that is right after they play Trinity.
The way the whole Tiger community comes together as one big animal.
Of course 8 district, 7 region, and 3 state titles in 9 years doesn't hurt.

You're very right. Our fan base is really important and makes up special. How many schools can say that they bring more to an out of town game which involves an hour and a half trip and Houston traffic than the home team does. Or how about 9,000 or so Lufkin fans leaving Lufkin at 1:00 on a Friday afternoon to travel to Waco? Our fans are what really make a difference. We can. And I love to see other schools do the same. It is so sad to a small turnout to support a team. It should be about the kids involved. And way too often there aren't even enough fans to equate one parent for each player, drill team member, band member, participating. At the very least those parents should be there if at all possible.

For me it's just not the team. Granted it has been as special as special can get for the last 4 years, but for me it's the whole community ties to the district. I teach in CISD, and Fridays during fb season are amazing. I teach in an elementary school and on Fridays you have kindergarten boys wearing dragon fb jerseys and kindergarten girls wearing Dragon cheerleader outfits. It's this way in the other grades too, only more intense.
Every school is a Dragon school. It truly is a big family. I had a kid in my class wear a future crew member tshirt because as Dragon fans know, when the Dragons score, the crew is doing pushups. The kid in my class did pushups too!!
You drive around SL, and so many cars have the Dragon sticker on the back windshield. I see some cars with stickers of the other area High Schools around , just not the volume I see w/ SLC. The town is very proud of the district.
I've taught in 2 other districts that shall go unnamed, both were 5A in the Houston Area, and they are not on the same level as SLC, on many phacets
(Academically & Athletically.) I had heard so much about Texas HS fb, and when I went to the HS games, I had high expectations, and these particular schools didn't meet those espectations. . Now the athletes on the field were a step up from where I came from, but as far as atmosphere, it was no big deal. But when I got to SLC, I was blown away. It is an amazing place.

Yes, the freshmen and jv play on Thrusday evenings typically. If the big team is playing on Thursday evening, the freshmen will play on Wednesday evening instead. Having watched some of the 7th and 8th graders play in the past year or two, the upcoming 9th grade class could well be one of Carroll's best. Of course, this isn't 7th and 8th grade anymore, so it will still have to be shown on Thursday nights, but they do look very promising.
I surely hope TD stays on for a few more years, especially with the talent he has coming his way. But Todd is cleraly a coach in demand not only at the high school level, but the pro and college levels as well. I have my ideas as to who would be on the replacement list, but there will also be quite a demand for a head coaching job with the Dragons, so it is way too early to be speculating on these matters. There certainly is/are internal candidate(s), but there are some very likely external candidates as well. Several former Carroll coahes are now head coaches elsewhere and they might like a return to Southlake.

You think they would consider Dane Johnson, even though he has no HC experience he has been promoted quickly to reigns of DC at Hebron. I know that Joe Martin though highly of him at Allen and the same goes fro Brazil at Hebron.
I also know back in the day that Lineweaver wanted to be a HC and that is why he left for Commerce, is there any bad blood between him and Ledbetter? Or would his offensive mindset be the drawback to him? Not saying he would leave Trinity, I just know that he really wanted the HC job at Southlake when they hired Rapp.

imo, the most likely next hire, if he wants the job, is joflo, followed by clayton george. both seem to have lots of character, and are great coaches. cg will have 4 years hc experience by then, plus 8 as a td asst. joflo-enough said. there will be 1-2 more coaches apply for the job, so coach tipps will have a good selection , i figure. it will be a daunting set of shoes to fill, but both the 2 i mentioned would be up to it, i believe. i know i'd love to have my kids(if i had any more) play for either.

joflo going to Southlake would almost be no drop off if and when you guys lose Dodge. I guess that is why he has turned down the PESH, Temple and Allen jobs recently. His stock will only get higher after the next two years too. He has said that the past freshmen class is the best he has ever had at Ryan and expects to go deep this year and win titles the next two. My buddy who attended their spring game told me that this is the fastest Ryan team since 2002 which is pretty scary.
Excuse my ignorance on this next question but is Clayton George the former Carroll assistant who took over the Haltom job?

The comment made about the ability of the incoming Carroll class makes sense as ominous as it sounds. After all, these kids arriving on campus now have been groomed for Dodgeball since they were in the 4th grade if I've read previous posts on Carroll's little league and junior high tactics correctly. On top of that, they've obviously grown up knowing nothing but success from watching the big kids.

Dane Johnson is probably not on the short list for head coaching candidates in the near future, even if TD were to depart. Let me repeat, I surely don't wan that to happen. Dane was a great kid when he was playing for Carroll and I think it would pretty cool to have the young man back at Carroll again.
Steve Lineweaver and Ledbetter have no bad blood between them that I am aware of. I talked to Steve a few weeks ago and certainly didn't sense anything along those lines. Since there is already a Lineweaver on the staff at Carroll, I doubt very much if there is any bad blood in the family.

We all hope that it is as promising/ominous as it sounds, depending upon one's viewpoint in high school football. One or two of those rising freshmen may even end up with some playing time on the jv at least this season.

Thats a great point about Aaron Lineweaver, I believe his name is Aaron? I guess all you Dragons will worry about a future HC when and if the opportunity rises. Till then yall will enjoy the success and achievements of the great kids in your community.
