I'm new to TX football. Have seen Clemens/Roosevelt in SA area practice, unbelievable speed on defensive side of ball. Linebackers on these teams run 4.5/6/7 40s...thats sick. Not that familiar with rest of state.
FOOTBALL QUESTION: At end of Regular season, which team will have your District's Top Overall Rated Defense???

freddie, i think you'll get some arguements from some of the local slugabeds who will let you know exuberantly that slc has won lots of games and 2 recent championships without a defense. not all agree, but the statistic mavens will fry anyone who thinks otherwise. as far as defnse in 5-5a, i suspect d ryan and slc will be the 1-2 teams.

From what I hear, Judson will have the fastest and best defense in 26-5A. Judson has some def. lineman running in the range you list for LB's. They have some 4.4 and 4.5 LB's.
Judson lost a lot of coaches to Wagner, but they might have a better coaching staff now than they did before. Rick Rhoads was the Head Coach at New Braunfels and always had great defensive teams. He's the Defensive Coordinator at Judson now. I want to see how Judson does with the offensive coach they got from Madison.

Judson Linebackers run 4.4/5 40s...What, thats insane. If thats so, wonder what the CBs/Safeties run.
Speed will get them to ball carrier, question is can they wrap up and tackle????
Roosevelt will be the surprise team in 26-5A...my prediction

I believe South Grand Prairie returns 6 or 7 all district defenders. Last year they were 3-0 in district but grades knocked out their team and they went 1-3 the rest of the way. If they can keep their grades up, watch out. Their defense can score points, but the question is if their offense can.

In 11-5a Garland and South Garland always have awesome defenses... both are extremely fast.
Garland has some awesome DB's like Devin McDowell and John Murphy coming back, and great line with Brandon Antwine at Tackle.

Judson has a lot of speed, so they have to put some smaller players at LB and on the DL. They tackle good and the problem was a few years ago when the LB's were slow.
I don't know who's best in the state.
Roosevelt might be good and will still have a real hard time making the playoffs. In 26-5A, 4th and 5th place means you have a pretty good team.

Lonny...do you have some Southwest Airline passes so you can get down & see your Rockets?

there are plenty of hops to catch from one afb to another. standby may not always work, but the price is right. does swa fly out of wf anyway?

No, I'm just going to have to see them at select times. I'll go to the Cove and the SV games. I can also go to Roosevelt, Madison, and Reagan if I go down early enough on the weekend. I probably won't go to all 3 of those games.

Lufkin will have the best D in the state. Longview won't be too far behind.

No, only American Eagle into Dallas and some other airline in September that starts going to Las Vegas. We don't have very many military airplanes leaving out of here, but we do have a few going down to SA.

If I had to pick a pre-season #1 defense based on returning experience/talent/production...Lufkin would be my pick there.
Also, Irving Macarthur had a very good defense last year and have some key players back on that side of the ball. Justin Gent could be the best linebacker in class 5A. The defense was a big reason why they went 10-0 last year in the regular season.
Westfield lost some key players on defense, but they also return guys like DT Orlando Toldson, LB Jamail Randle and DBs Danny McCray and Luther Eta. Each one of them played a key role on the Mustangs' run to state last year.
Judson is very well-coached on defense, and have had a lot of speed on that side of the ball lately.
South Grand Prairie is the prime darkhorse candidate this year with the talent they have on defense. If they can stay healthy and not lose anyone to grades...look out.
Garland might also have an argument for top defense going into this year, at least on paper. They have a ton of speed to burn and key guys back at every position.

Thanks to all for Replying :) I'll be checking out the real season stats pretty soon here, it will be fun to see whose predictions are close...I love good defenses.
I believe that Dominating defenses demoralize opponents, when teams can't even get back to the line of scrimmage, there heads go down, now your players and coaches know you have the advantage. Games are 95% mental, preparation/belief in winning is the key to success on the field, when athletic abilities are the same. When I played, our defense set the tone for the whole game, it got the "O" and special teams hyped...sacks, swarming to the ball, and gang tackling got our fans in the stands and everyone on the team fired up. Its my experience that when the Offense gets excited and pumps up the D, they will by habit have there helmets in their hands, congratulate the D as they leave the field, and can't wait themselves to get back on the field. Also, when your D is dominating, and the O scores a few TDs, your 2nd and 3rd string players get a chance to play...that doesn't happen in 42 to 37 final scores.

Answer to your question: The team that wins the state championship. :)

Not always the case....Some teams have to outscore the opponet all the way to the title game....while some teams actually shut other teams down...Look for Northshore to have a stout D this year also....They were solid last year up until Pearland and Westfield.

Shore will always be decent but I remember in 2001 they had an unstoppable offense and no defense. You had to outscore tham to win and Madison did just that. The title came when Shore's defense was impenatrable. Like all great teams that win titles, it is the D that dominates. I also think of Oklahoma and the Baltimore Ravens in 2000(?). Defense was the game in their title wins. Can't forget '85 Yates and 85' Chicago Bears.

I hear that said a lot of the 01' defense and while it may be partly true. One has to remember there were a lot of underclassman on that Defensive unit. Also as all Shore fans will remember for some reason that entire season Shore had been using a short kickoff trying to pin teams inside the 20. Far too othen though the kicker ended up kicking the ball out of bounds. As many had hoped they would not do that with a team as explosive as Madison was, but as we all saw they indeed stayed with it. There for most of Madison's drives were startig from the fourty of fifty yard line due to penalties.
As for who will have the top d in the state this year. I'm sure it will be one of those who have bee there over the last couple of years. Lufkin,KatyShore,Westfield,Carroll just to name a few.
As for who the top D in our district will be thats hands down Shore.

Katy pretty much uses the bend don't break mentality so on paper their defense doesn't always look that hot. On defense they do what they need to compliment their offensive game plan.
