I KNOW this was covered on the board quite a while back, but I didn't pay attention at the time.
Why are the Panthers nicknamed "The Pack"? I had previously only seen teams named Coyotes or Wolves with this nickname. I have never heard of a pack of panthers, cats are pretty solitary creatures.
This isn't making fun. I just want to know the story behind one of the states more unique nicknames.

FB - others know better than I, but it goes back numerous decades apparently. One Pack Together was the original slogan. I don't know if any one person takes credit for it, but it has stuck, and Coach Outlaw put "Pack" on the helmets at least 10 years ago.
The state basketball run to the title in 1979 was very impromptu and that team was known as the Cardiac Pack due to numerous come from behind wins - which is where I thought it came from - but I was told that was not the case. PA2005 is the person with the best history in this area.

Okay, The term "Pack" has been around for a long time. I remember seeing the mechants windows downtown painted with " We back the Pack" when I was a little kid in the 1950's. It has been explained to me that the term "Pack" is for team unity, as one slogan says " One Pack Together". There also may have been some confusion by some people in the past about the fact that Panthers are solitaire cats by nature and do not roam in packs or prides as other big cats.
Doesn't matter now, " Backing the Pack" has been around for more than 60 years and it works for us and that is all that matters. It is "Tradition" here in Lufkin and I don't see any reason to change things..
John Outlaw started using the "Pack" on the helmets with the 1996 team, I like it and have no problems with the term. The name " Panthers " are sewn on the front of the Lufkin jersey if that helps any.
New uniforms are on the way for this season, will not know what they will look like until July. Probably will not be any great changes, they will still be Purple or White.

LP usually tweeks the uni's about every 3 years. Last year (or year before) they added a little white flare on the pants and shirt. It's hard really to notice much difference since maybe mid-90's. The helmets haven't changed in a decade.

Lufkin gets new uniforms every two seasons. The old uniforms are passed down accordingly to the underclass teams. Currently the freshman team will get to wear the 2001 State Championship jerseys.
As already stated, the term "Pack" has been around a long time for Lufkin. I was speaking with my uncle recently, who graduated from Lufkin in 1938, and ask him if they used "Pack" back then. He said it was around in those days as well. They even had a live Panther as a mascot, named Fang, that was taken to all the games and cared for by a local funeral home. Fang died in the early 50's and that was the end of the live mascots at Lufkin.
Go Pack!!!

let me be the primary hijacker again.
i played my first collegiate game in the luxurious confines of wharton jc. we dressed in what usually would have passed for a large phone booth on a sweltering early september evening. it hadn't rained over an inch earlier that afternoon, giving ole sol a chance to bring the temperature up to and passed the rel humidity of infinity. when we got off the bus, i was surprised to see what appeared to be fog stretching across the field making it difficult to see the opposite stands. it wasn't fog though, it was mosquitoes. i remember trying to dress standing up and upon resting my hand on the black wall for balance, being surprised to find the wall was painted white, but mosquitoed black. several times during the game, i found my leg shrivelled up due to acute blood loss. when you happened to get taken to the ground, it was imperative to hit it coming up, or anemia would set in. if ever there was a group of people who wanted nothing else than to get the game over, they were on that field that night. i can't believe we wanted nothing better than to get back to the pleasantness of houston.

Pack is common term for a group of Panthers in the terminology of our past. Typically a southern term, but it was used in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
You still find some schools that use the Panther mascot that refer to themselves as the "Pack" such as Georgia State.
