Southlake Carroll is the preseason FAB 50 No. 1
The first football games for the nation's 2005 high school football season will be played in less than two weeks in Alaska and the first significant games involving ranked teams will be coming up just one week later.
That's why this is a perfect time to release the preseason Student Sports FAB 50 rankings, which happen to be led off by the same two schools that topped the final rankings for the 2004 season.
Preseason national No. 1 Southlake Carroll of Texas, known as the Dragons, have certainly been breathing fire in recent seasons. They begin the 2005 season where they started and finished in 2004, and that's No. 1 in the Student Sports FAB 50. The defending state Class 5A-Div. II champion has won 47 of its last 48 games while winning two of the last three crowns and placing second in 2003.

McKay Jacobson looks to help Southlake Carroll to a second straight FAB 50 postseason No. 1
With 11 returning starters, plus a touted new quarterback, the Dragons remain the team to beat in Texas, and nationally, and would have the strongest claim to FAB 50 honors if they record another 16-0 season in the competitive highest division of the Lone Star State.
Replacing the trigger of last year's attack will be the main reloading focus for the 2005 Dragons. Lost by graduation was quarterback Chase Daniel, a University of Missouri recruit and two-time state Class 5A Player of the Year honoree. Daniel, who amassed 5,550 total offense yards and 68 touchdowns, also was selected the EA Sports National Player of the Year.
Taking over the quarterback reins will be senior Greg McElroy (6-3, 210), last year's backup who impressed in summer camp competition and already had received several college scholarship offers.
Daniel may not be around, but last season's three top receivers remain on the scene, including the best pair of pass-catchers in the state. They are Clint Renfro, son of a former NFL receiver, and McKay Jacobson (6-0, 180). Renfro landed 72 passes for 1,426 yards and 23 TDs last season. Jacobson missed eight games with an injury last season but managed to land 42 passes for 600 yards and five scores. As a sophomore, Jacobson caught 76 passes for 1,052 yards and 11 TDs and returned four punts for scores. Another prolific veteran receiver is James Allen (6-3, 205), who landed 52 catches for 827 yards and nine TDS in 2004.
On defense, six starters are back, including linebacker Patrick Benoist (6-1, 215), last year's leading tackler with 178 total stops.

Chane Moline will lead what should be another powerful Mission Viejo squad
Preseason national No. 2 Mission Viejo of California lost out in a close decision for last year's final No. 1 ranking to Southlake Carroll and starts out this fall in the same slot.
Both teams are similar in that they have talented new quarterbacks taking over for graduated All-Americans. For Mission Viejo, the new field general for head coach Bob Johnson's offense is 6-2, 190-pound R.J. Toman, who Johnson believes could have a Div . I college scholarship locked up before he starts his first game.
Because of Toman's expected strong play, the real question marks for the Diablos will be up front as five Div. I college-bound players are gone, including all of the front four on defense. The offensive line figures to remain a force due to the return of three-year starting center Cooper Dodd (6-0, 245) and likely Div. I recruit David Burton (6-2, 255), who will move from guard to tackle.
Ten starters are back in all for Johnson, with the bulk of those being from the wideout and defensive back corps.
The team's top two returnees are fullback Chane Moline (6-0, 240), who rushed for nearly 1,800 yards and scored 36 TDs last season, and tight end Konrad Reuland (6-6, 245), who led the Diablos with 35 catches for 538 yards and six TDs. Moline also was the state junior player of the year and arguably was the team's MVP since many of his biggest games were against the strongest opponents. Reuland is regarded as perhaps the No. 1 tight end recruit in the nation and also will make the offensive line graduation losses easier to absorb since he is such a strong blocker.
