i hav to disagree with u a lil cy-fall. these teams are taking this serious. causethe teames that make it deep or win it are usually the teams that make the most noise during the season. every since they started 7 on 7, the team that one it all in 7 on 7 won state the same year. tyler lee( 04') i think cilina(99') some where around there. Believe me this is kind serious.

Yeah and the rest of the time it mattered not! Permian even won it a few years back and then went onto have a losing record. Whomever correlates 7 on 7 (basically back yard touch football with only 7 players) with REAL football needs some serious help. Even when Tyler Lee won it in 2004 they lost to Lufkin and Longview in REAL football. Lufkin lost to SLC (div2 and real champ) that same year. SLC did not win 7 on 7. You do the math Einstein!! ;)

you didnt read every thing i said i guess. i said the the teams that win or make it far hav a strong season most of the time. tyler lee won state that year so you do the math eihnstein. its different with all eleven but 7 on 7 shows signs of what you got or might hav. ill tell you this if lufkin flop on the first day they want be worth nuthin come seasontime im tellin you. this is kinda serious. the same for southlake carrol.

I realize you probably didn't mean this, but SLC did win the first 7 on 7 state game back in '98 (?) and made it to the state semi-finals that season. However, I tend to agree with you. 7 on 7 is great fun and surely helps build co-ordination between receivers and QBs. However, what a team really gets out of it depends on how that squad approaches it. At least a few teams, especially on defense, don't have anything that even looks like their regular linebackers in the game, opting instead for additional defense backs. Other squads run what I would call an offense designed especially for 7 on 7, rather than their normal offense that they will employ during the season. Of course, if one is primarily a ground-oriented offense, why not? But that really doesn;t prepare a team for the fall. I guess what I am trying to say is that some teams place a great emphasis on winning 7 on 7 and others less so. Sure everybody would like to win it, but more important for some than others. Having said all that, I have absolutely no clue as to who might win this thing in two weeks. But I'll see everybody in College Station.

Actually, Permian had their best season in 6 years, tied for second place in district but missing the playoffs on tiebreakers.
7 on 7 is the not the end-all-be-all. It is simply another tool, just like power lifting.

Now here is a new viewpoint and idea that I have not seen before. It seems to have alot of validity in my opinion. If there was a power lifting competition for the offensive linemen, would that give some indication which teams may have a very good offensive line that year? Of course, quickness and footwork also come into play, but strength is a very big part of it.

OK let me try this again. The year Tyler Lee won the 7 0n 7 championship in 2004 they lost to Lufkin and Longview (div2 teams) in the regular season so again do the math big red and clueless Einstein. Lufkin beat them by 11 that same year. SLC beat Lufkin who beat Longview. They did not win the 7 on 7 championship that year or in 2005 when they are the #1 team in the nation. I agree, 7 on 7 is good fun and good practice but does not relate to real football at all. I serously laugh at those that try to compare the 2 because they have no clue.
My bad Permian, yall won the 7 on 7 championship but did not make the playoffs in REAL football. Great year man. ;)

And I didn't realize I was dealing with a child. Booty swole isn't a gay term- it means you're disproportionately upset about something, Einstein. And why do you keep bringing up gay references anyway? Does the term "the guilty dog barks first" mean anything to you? Again, why are you getting so upset about something you admittedly "don't take seriously"? Bottom line, we're proud of ALL of our trophies here. Any time you want to compare....:D

Many of the top players in the state will be on display. I know darkhorses usually do pretty well, but so do the "usual suspects". Here are some teams I have on my favorites list right now...
Austin Westlake (top QB in Nick Foles)
Brenham (Jarret Lee at QB, talent around him)
Brownwood (40 game pool play winning streak and counting)
Cy Falls (talented team, experience all-around)
John Tyler (usually solid in 7 on 7, Kendal Hunter is one to watch)
Lewisville Hebron (experienced team, some amazing skill talent)
Lufkin (see above)
Southlake Carroll (shouldn't be surprising)
Darkhorses
Arlington Lamar (always a good 7 on 7 team)
Baytown Lee (their Fall coach basically invented 7 on 7)
Beaumont Ozen (very athletic team, lots of speed)
Houston Stratford (one of best junior QB prospects in state, Andrew Luck)
Katy ISD schools (Katy, Taylor, and Cinco have solid teams....Tigers have a very good defense, big play threats on O...Taylor usually does 7 on 7 well...Cinco has a QB named JJ McDermott who could have a break out 7 on 7 and regular Fall season)
That's the way I see it right now. I need to look at things more in depth though.

Sorry if I was rude last night I had a little too many enjoying the 4th of July. I am hardly a child and I am far from gay? (wife and 4 kids) Sorry that I have never heard the term "booty swole" but thanks for enlightening me. I am closer to being an Einstein now thanks. I am well aware Permian has several trophies from several several years ago and I am well aware of their proud history. It is kind of sad to see how bad Permian is now. Hopefully they will be back?
My whole point was, please do not compare 7 on 7 to REAL football. That is all. You are right! it is still something to be proud of if you win that tourney but it sure does not mean that team will have a good season come september.

And I never said that. My first post stated emphatically that it is not the end-all-be-all, but rather one more opportunity to get in work for the real season. I think the fact that your own school not only participates in it, but even goes so far as to host a qualifying tournament, ought to go a long way in justifying whether it should be taken seriously or not. Apparently John Outlaw does, or I'm sure Lufkin would not be going to College Station on the 14th.

7 on 7 can be very beneficial to your teams skill players. It is great practice and yes Lufkin takes it fairly seriously. I just think it is over hyped a tad. I hope Lufkin does well in the 7 on 7 tourney but I will not lose any sleep over it if they do not.
Again, I apologize for being rude last night. Was totally uncalled for and silly.

Great post KT, I think you hit it on the head from what I have observed so far this 7 on 7 season.
7 on 7 can showcase talent at the skill positions for sure, but touch football is not a real predictor of who can beat who in the fall.
Many kids are out and some will miss even the state championship tourney from CyFalls and other schools I am sure.
I have noticed that teams with equal talent at the skill positions, the winner more often than not are the ones that are more aggressive. Remember this is touch football and same rules for pads do not apply. For instance running through the recivers to stop a reception. This is something our coaches plan to address to officials at the state tournament before each game.
Have fun and keep the kids healthy is the idea. 7 on 7 can be more dangerous as far as injuries and thus counter productive to summer training.
Hope to see all of you there and good luck to all. Should be a fun time.

I think the teams that get the most out of it, as far as the Fall is concerned, are the ones who use their actual tactics and don't make up a whole playbook just for 7 on 7.

Big time under statement, in my "play" book! :)
Also to grayowl60;
Apparently, your team doesn't play a single team that passes either. My point being, that almost everybody equates 7 on 7 value to the O side of the ball. But I submit that if you use your anticipated LB and defensive backfield, they are the biggest "winners" in the 7 on 7 expierence!!!

assuming you support the garland owls, i know for a fact that they have competed in tourneys in the past. i have some of their stud dbs on video. and cchs is dead on. the 7on7 games allow something that can't be garnered anywhere else-live db training/practice reps. there is no way to prepare to cover wr's except to cover wrs, and they aren't available anywhere else.any team not taking advantage of the ops is way behind come 11-11.
as far as injuries, i am sure they happen, but i have only witnessed 1 season ending one in the 6 years i was involved in 7on7. i did hold my breath lots of times, i admit, and was always glad when teams came out unscathed.

Great point. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen QBs hold the ball at their hip while waiting to throw it. Also, a lot of QBs in 7-on-7 shuffle towards the line until they find a WR. By the time they throw the ball they are maybe a yard behind the LOS or even less. Those two examples would both qualify as bad habits.
And does anyone think that 4 seconds is too long an amount of time to get the ball off? How may times in a real game does a QB have 4 seconds to work with? Wouldn't 3 seconds be more realistic?

North Mesquite lost a DB for the season last year at one of the 7-on-7 qualifiers. He'll be back for his senior season this year, but he was missed last year. I'm not sure if he has participated in this 7-on-7 so far, but I had heard that he wasn't planning on it initially.

CF,
3 or 4 seconds is accurate for the time you'd have in real 11 on 11 to get rid of it usually.

That is another reason why coaching still matters and teams should run their regular offenses and defenses. Don't start with bad habits and develop those (unless, of course, you are playing my guys.) ;)

7 on 7 is a good way for some of the top athletes in any school to come together to see what they could do against other teams in the area. It also lets people see who could be good and who could be bad under pressure since it lets us all check out anyone who could be a threat over the season. and WESTLAKE will win this 7 on 7 and the state crown
