the skip pass-lateral that ed hargett (i think)threw in a tu v tamu game in the 60's. the receiver threw a hissy fit about what a crappy pass it was, the defenders relaxed, the receiver started walking back towards the huddle, then raised up and thew a bomb to the opposite wr. daddy d was fit to be tied.

2001---Lufkin vs. Longview---last game, district title on the line-
Reggie drops back, SEVEN lobos rush him, he spins out of a pack with 5 guys, throw a bullet to Terrence Mott, his dives, TD Pack is up 14-0.

I think it was 2001. Copperas Cove vs. Waco ina barnburner. Cove was up late like 34-27 when Waco scored with 20 seconds left, makin it 34-34. Coach Welch told Leon Johnson, who was gonna return the kick, to try his best to get it out to the 35 or so so we could hailmary it. He fields it 3 yards deep in the endzone and returns it 103 yards to give Cove a 41-34 win and send Cove back into the playoffs. Great Play.

I agree with dragonsdaddy on the Aggie play--I think it was in '66 or '67. As a 12 or 13 thirteen old UT football fan, I knew up until then only that I wasn't supposed to like the Aggies. After that so-called "Texas Special", I understood why.
Was the receiver's name Long? Or was he the one who caught the lateral bounce pass and threw the forward pass? I'm sure any good Aggie can fill in the details.

Ove' Johannsen's 69 yard field goal in 1977 -- Abilene Christian against (I think) Angelo State - homecoming Saturday afternoon. The game was a blowout and I've seen dozens of other plays that were more electrifying - but seeing a guy line up for a 69 yard field goal in itself is freakish. Then making it was truly awesome.

I saw Russell Erxleben's long FG for UT back in the 70s--67 yards, I think? Was that against the Owls, dragonsdaddy? Tony Franklin may have hit one of about the same length for the Aggies back then too. But they can't beat old Ove. Some of my ancestors were Johanessons, but they were dirt farmers, not kickers.

Erxleben's was in 1977 same as Ove's and was against Rice. Franklin's was against Baylor and was the year before. You might also remember that in 1977, Texas was also the victim of a 67 year field goal as Steve Little from Arkansas kicked one against them. What a year for kickers..

Didn't Steve Little crash and die while intoxicated? I had his football card when I was a kid.
Tony Franklin does most of Judson's football games on the radio and is a good color commentator. I still can't believe he kicked in Philly without a shoe.

You know, I really don't remember if he died in a crash. He was a bust as a kicker in the NFL. The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in 1978 and he lasted what, 2 seasons? Maybe that drove him to drinking... :(

Correct Hammer, sad but true on Little.
Russell Erxleben (sp) became a financial planner and got in really hot water by directing people to high-risk investments that went sour. He actually may have fled the country at one point - not sure where he is today, but a good friend of my folks got burned badly by him.
Ove is a motivational speaker among other things. He couldn't make it in the NFL either - couldn't kick without the tee.

Rodney Thomas (Groveton 2A) in the early 90's knock two defenders down with head butts and break outside to out run the rest of the team who had the angle on him for about 80 yds. He was a stud.

I don't know, kickers spend a lot of time kicking dirt! :D
That they do, but the old Swede farmers spent their time cultivating it, chopping weeds and grass from it, and planting in it whatever they could get to grow. They would never have kicked it, but some of the less pious ones no doubt cussed it a few times, especially in the middle of Texas droughts. ;)

2004 SLC vs. Lufkin... semi-finals
Chase Daniel takes snap from center, looking for a reciever for at least 7 seconds, the Oline had great protection, luna figures that he would be wide open if he left the back field, so he comes out of the back field catches a pass from chase, breaks two tackles, and runs completely over a little cornerback into the endzone for the touchdown... not to mention they replayed on the jumbo tron about 5 times in a row...

1991, McCullough vs. Hunstville, they are #3 in state, we are #8 I think? We were down 10 - 7 with 17 seconds to go, all they had to do was down the ball to win. QB walks up to the line to take a knee, as soon as the center snaps the ball, Jarrett Irons, our MLB dives over the center (Like Lavar Arrington did at Penn State) and hits the QB, he fumbles the ball and we recover with 12 seconds. Marshall Young come's in and kicks a 50+ yard field goal to tie the game at 10 - 10! What a play and game that was! Bearkat Stadium was sold out for that one, I will never forget it!

I would have to say the best one i've seen was the last TD pass by Reggie McNeal to a WR (forget his name) in a torrential downpour of freezing rain against Euless Trinity to win the game. It was freaking COLD that day. Couldn't stay dry even with umbrellas and getting wet made it even colder. I met Reggie's mom at the concession stand and she was very cool. Told her I was from Waco and had been a fan since the 2000 game seeing him play. She said yeah, I remember ol Derrick Johnson in that one.
Lufkin was down 20-0 at the half. We all left at half-time and listened to it on the way to Shreveport to gamble. I was sick I missed the end of it...BUT, I GOT IT ON TAPE!

South Grand Prairie's Kick Returner, Melvin Kelly, can return kicks. He returned a punt and kickoff against us last year and has moves.
But the worst... last play of the game vs. MacArthur, their QB who was in who was Duane Brooks brother, acted like he was going to knee the ball but instead took the ball for a QB Keeper and ran about 80 yards into the end zone with no time left and the final score ended 57-7. The bad thing about that was our team though, who made absolutely no effort to tackle him. They just kind of slowly jogged and didn't really care, like they are on the last leg of a marathon. It was a disgrace.

I remember I had on some black leather boots....some baggy faded jeans...a t shirt..and a black/red sweater. And man...I was still freezing!
We got back to the Expedition and cranked the heat up.....I couldn't feel my toes, fingers, nose. My shoes...jeans were soaking wet.
I looked around when we got there and saw women in camoflauge coveralls with thermals that hit the nail on the head! I knew then we weren't in Austin anymore....haha
Ever since in the winter I take a small bad with gloves, socks, and coat. I missed a damn good ending cause of the stinkin weather. We thought the game was over tho. Trinity was blowing Lufkin off the line all the 1st half.

That was one exciting game. The pass went to Jeremy Berry. I was told from one of his teammates that they called him Scary Berry because they said he would get scared he was going to get hit when he was going for the ball. Well that was one heck of a play for Reggie and Jeremy. There was like 36 seconds left on the clock. I remember at half time alot of the Lufkin fans left the game. My wife wanted to leave but I said we were staying till the end. We were already soaking wet and freezing cold. I came prepared but the cold weather gear and rain suits were not enough. I remember one of Trinity's linemen walking off the field at half time and he was looking at all of the Lufkin fans and players in a taunting way. As if to say that we were done and they had the game wrapped up. Too bad that lineman could not do that at the end of the game. Well I remember when Reggie threw that touchdown pass I was giving high-fives to people I did not even know. To me that game was more exciting then the state championship game. When the game was over some of the parking lot was flooded and we just had to walk in water that was above our ankles. I have the game on tape and my son and I have watched it several times in the last few years. It still gets us pumped up and excited every time we watch it. That definetely was a memorable game and season for my family. I remember thinking about how sorry it was for alot of our fans to give up and leave at the half but in retrospect I think if the weather would have been nicer they would have stuck around. I am glad I did. It was worth it.

I have that game and the LP-Austin Westlake game on tape and watch it from time to time.
One part in the Westlake game I laugh about everytime I see it ....is when big Ju Parks arm tackles a Westlake kid off the field onto the Westlake bench.....he gets up and trots off with the LP fans yelling JUUUUUUUUUU The look on the Westlake side is PRICELESS. Their eyes are wide open and some jaws dropped...... and look so serious like they never seen that before. It is great! I guess it was big Ju's size.....the chick trainer for Westlake is the funniest.

Did you notice the Lufkin player at the end of the LP vs Trinity game? I don't remember seeing it when I was at the game but I noticed it in the video. He gets all excited and gets out on the field, lays on the turf and starts trying to make a snow angel. Obviously there is no snow but it was kind of funny because one of the coaches yanks him off the field and pushes him back towards the sideline. I too remember what Ju did. My wife thought he was getting booed but I had to tell her they were saying JUUUUUUUUUUUUU! If anyone knows how I can get a copy of Lufkin's State Championship game please let me know.

I have 3...
2 From homecoming 2005 at Coppell vs Irving Nimtz...
Emanual Moody, Got the hand off and ran up the middle cuts all the way to the visting sideline, the cuts all the way back over to the homeside line, and cut again but up the middle of the feild for a touch down, just making every single person missing, breaking tackles left and right, it was glorius!!!
So we were down 37-33, late in the forth , and Nimtz had the ball on there own 20. We were 1-5 in the last five games and our deffenes had been beaten down after the weeks prevous game (45-0 Iriving Macarther). 3 year letter men line back Wesly Cambell Picked off a pass and ran it back 30 yards for the go head a touchdown...With time running Irving Nimtz mouted a come back drive, With seconds they had moved to the Coppell 20 yard line for the winning touchdown. 39-37, they had time to run a play then and a feild goal. The Nimtz QB threw it to a seemly open reciver in the end zone, to put the game outta reach for Coppell, when suddnely Jr CB Micheal Cleavland jumps outta know where to pick the ball of in the end zone to give Coppell the win, that started there 3 game winning streak!
My last fav was Coppell vs Irving , when Emanual Moody lit this guy up, he just ran right over him. It was amazing...

I thought about saying that, but I also liked the Fox run when he was fumbling the ball for 10 yards and still took it 60. I liked Williams muffing the punt against Lee and taking it back 97 yards, too. I didn't want to be too much of a homer and stayed out of the discussion until now.
The throw might not be the best play I've ever seen, but it sure is the most important and exciting. I was shaking my daughter when Andre caught that ball!

you misinterpret my name. SFA stands for the Sixman Football Association. I didnt think about the Steven F Austin connection. The SFA is a seven year old amateur football league in San Antonio that consists of 15 teams plus whatever teams join this year. There is a sister league in Tampa, Florida that has 12 teams. Any other questions or concerns hit up my private messaging.
I am back from good ol Slow Ross (Sul Ross) and going to be going to every Rocket game this year and planning on making something special for the kids this year. Hope to see yall out there.

yeah, and my brother was the rice fg kicker. that year he had to watch franklin and erxlaben kick 67 yders. i saw the erx kick. it was surreal seeing the holder on the 43 yard line behind the 50. he made it with plenty to spare. it might have been good from 75. there was a strong tail wind.

in 73 or 74, a late ko return by carl swierc after tamu had fought back and with less than 2 minutes to go had finally taken the lead over rice. the crowd of ags went berserk and held the rice band hostage in the tunnel for 30+ minutes and had to be rescued by driving food service vans thru the mob to save the MOB(marching owl band). the same corps group threatened some poor little smu cheerleaders with their sabres because the big, tough cadets felt threatened. i guess they were worried that the cheerleader might drip some hair dye on them.

Yeah sometimes I would forget he had the ball, thats saying alot saying I was on his offensive line last year. ;)

Tony Dorsetts 99.5 yard touchdown run. A record that can never be broken.
How many people can say that?
HS?.....one of my favorites happened last year...the linebacker from Longview tried to go head up with Javorskie...and it was ugly. I watched the link to that game a few weeks ago...and it was still ugly...ugly. You could hear the crowd..."OOOOOOhhhh"
Played in a scrimmage against Groveton's varsity when I was in 9th grade and saw Rodney Thomas cut back and forth so many times...he broke about 15 tackles and scored...it was about 80+yards...I never got a finger on him.
That was the first and last time Lufkin ever played Groveton that I know of....
Groveton played Lufkin? Since it was Rodney Thomas, I assume that this took place in the late 80s?!?!

Or early 90's....90-91 maybe

must have been the freshmen or jv lufkin team because 5a lufkin has never ever faced groveton in varsity competition. groveton is 1a now right?? r thomas was a very special player!! one of the best rb's ever in hs ball in texas. he went onto to have a very good career at a&m and was a solid nfl player. their qb went on to play for ou in those years right?? pretty impressive for a 2a school. they dominated 2a in those years.

3 for me-----2000, 3 seconds left, Longview on it's own 3 yard line(against Lake Highlands)hail mary that tipped off of a LH strong safety's hands, Willie Andrews catches it, scampers down the sidelines 97 yards for the winning TD as time runs out.........2004---field goal(either 45 or 47 yards) against Evangel in OT to send them packing; 2004---Vondrell McGee scampers in from 25 yards in OT to send the eventual state champs(Tyler Lee) packing back to Tyler.........................
