SMITHSON VALLEY — Eryk Anders, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive tackle from Smithson Valley, signed a football scholarship with the University of Alabama this week.
Anders was a first-team Class 5A all-state selection by The Associated Press in 2004, but Rangers coach Larry Hill said he was largely overlooked during last spring’s recruiting process because he was thought too small to play at the Division I level.
“The Alabama staff first learned about Anders earlier this summer and had approached him about a walk-on opportunity,” Hill said. “After one of their scholarships opened up in recent weeks, coach David Shula quickly offered the scholarship to Anders, who after an official visit, accepted.”
During the regular season for the 13-3 state finalist Rangers, Anders had 71 tackles, including 28 for losses, with nine sacks, four forced fumbles, four pass breakups and two blocked kicks that included one for a touchdown.
For the whole season, Anders ranked fourth among Rangers in tackles (115), with 12 for losses and 11 sacks. The unanimous 26-5A first-team selection was also named to the Herald-Zeitung’s All-Comal County first team.
Hill said Anders will most likely play defensive end or outside linebacker for the Crimson Tide.
