One thing I have noticed that could be of some controversy is Lake Highlands over Plano in 9-5A for the fourth spot. I think Lake Highlands will be better that some posters here expect, but I still was surprised to see this.
And good work KT's as always.

I have no problem with anyones rankings but your enrollment figures may be wrong. I'm sure Permian is not the largest school in the district. They may be near 2000.

We used the numbers the UIL released during the alignment (most recent official numbers). They'll use those to determine the playoff seeding unless there are any special cases. There are usually a few big changes they'll update right before the season. That'd be surprising to see Permian barely a 5A school though based on what you are saying.

One mistake I saw - you have Copperas Cove in your region 2 playoff brackets... much as I'd love for the Owls to get another shot at them, I doubt it's gonna happen this year...

According to the projected playoff brackets for D-I there's a possibility North Shore and SLC could meet for the title. I would love for that to unfold!!!

This publication is truly an excellent job of work. Congratulations and well done to the Administrators. I assure you this has, and will give me many hours of pleasure. The Gridiron Guide is perfect tool to use in the build up to the start of the season and will certainly assist me becoming more knowledgeable about the 2006 season.

either slc is living off the past(certainly true, to some extent), or the kt's don't think much of the slc players, but love the team(the ultimate TEAMme). the player's to watch don't mention a single slc player. the position groupings go so far as to rank laredo united's wr crew ahead of the unmentioned slc corps. does anyone else think that is hilarious? i guess, until proven otherwise, i'd just throw in the slc wr's regardless their names, in any top 10 rankings. since the state finalists are always obliged to have 3-5 all-state reps, i'm guessing that justin padron, tre, both fords and either cantu or tomlin will be the selections.

We think very highly of your players, you just don't have many coming back that are proven performers, so we chose to give some recognition to those that are.
Both Riley and Tre' are on the Top 10 by position rankings, by the way.
Say what you want about Laredo United's receivers, but they do return 2 kids that were very productive All-District players as Jr's. Juan Camacho was among the tops in the state for receiving yards last fall. We're simply rewarding them for having a great year. I don't think it hurts anything.
I'm sure Cantu and the Ford boys will put up great numbers and be well worthy of any and all accolades they receive this fall.

yeah, i mistyped. i meant the top 3 teams. i'm most surprised about excluding padrone who performed so well last year, esp while injured in the state game. how quickly they forget.

I was surprised to not see SLC on the team rankings, but Judson isn't on any either. I think being #2 was a gift and I'm of the opinion that the Top 10 is more out of whack this year than last year, which was excellent. They got #1 right, but it fell off after that. I'll be on here rain or shine, but I have my doubts right now. If the KT's come through like last year, I'll be here to sing their praises.

I've always been a fan of the work the KT boys do with this site and Gridiron Guide and this year is no different. However, I think they are wrong with the #1 pick and there are a couple after that that I disagree with. Lufkin may look like the best on paper, but I am from the school of thought that says the big dog is still the big dog until somebody knocks them off and SLC is still the big dog. Any preseason list with anybody other than SLC at #1 is inherently wrong IMO. Lufkin could win state, but only if they dodge SLC. Lufkin cannot and will not beat SLC in the playoffs.
I really like North Shore and Hebron where they are at and I was frankly surprised to see Hebron get that kind of love, but you have to look at the athletes they return and think that they are top 5 material. I don't think Cy-Falls or Trinity are top 10 material yet and I have strong doubts about A&M Cons. and Judson being in there as well.
I think with what Berkner returns off a 12-1 team, they should be top 10 as should Mansfield Summit. Summit might be as loaded as they have ever been. You have to look at their backfield with Chiles, Oliver and Johnston and just say, "Damn!". I was actually half expecting Summit to be top 5 material.
Another one that is just a spot or two too low in my opinion is Smithson Valley. I know they lose some good players, but coach Hill has built a reputation similar to coach Dodge at SLC. Both those guys just always seem to find a way to reload and until coach Hill skips a beat, I think you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. I would have put Smithson Valley ahead of Judson and Trinity.
In the end, I think this is the year the streak comes to an end because I don't think Lufkin will win it all. According to the Div. II bracket in the Gridiron Guide, SLC would meet Lufkin in the semis and so long as Todd Dodge is sucking air and wearing black and green, I don't think Outlaw will be him in the playoffs. Again, just my humble opinion.

Lufkin and SLC are projected to be in different brackets. That had nothing to do with our #1 pick, however.
Lufkin was the easiest choice for #1 since North Shore in 2003. Don't forget that they were without Claybon when the played the Dragons last fall. They may not have won, but I'd bet it would have been alot more competitive.
While Carroll has to reload, Lufkin will have nearly all of their key players back. Of course, SLC has a phenomenal program and they'll be right back up at the top, but I think alot of people are selling the Lufkin program short...they are not on SLC's level, but they are as close as anyone else.
Trinity is ahead of both Judson and SV because they return more key players from a team that won state, while the other two didn't. As good as SV and Judson are, in terms of consistency, Trinity is right up there with them (55-11 in the last 5 years). Judson is ahead of SV because they return more key people from a team that advanced to state, whereas SV didn't. Coach Hill's program is excellent, but Judson isn't far behind. Besides, they are ranked right next to each other, so we are showing that we consider them to be about equal.
Summit and Berkner would be higher if they had more proven talent on defense. That and Summit did get knocked out by EP Franklin last year.

IMO the only thing that could keep CyFalls from going far is their coaching staff. Several times last year I know piss poor play calling almost lost them a game.
I'm in full agreeance with the Hebron pick, I think the ones crying about it just have sour grapes.
KT2000
06-03-2006, 05:21 PM
I expect Hebron to have a strong season. They've got very solid returning experience. They run a scheme on offense (option) that's very tough to stop when you have players who can execute it correctly. Defensively, they are very strong because the head coach Brian Brazil is a guru on that side of the ball.
Hebron will make the move up just fine in my opinion.

much as i appreciate the state-wide love slc has been receiving, i've got to disagree. slc has the potential to be really good, if everything comes together. lp doesn't have to have things fall into place for them to be outstanding. and while i like our chances to be playing late in the po's, lp is the best team coming into the season, imo. as several have stated previously, slc going d-1 would bring a whole new set of competitors. and would leave one steep hurdle out of lp's race to state.

You picked Cotton Turner as the Offensive MVP for 23-5A... r u serious????? he's good, but not that good, his O-Line isn't good enough to give Cotton the best protection, a decent D-line will get em' each time, and with that said i really don't know who will be offensie MVP... good pick for Defensive MVP, though Justin may not get it, its up for grabs between him Chris "DB" (transferred from Hou. Lamar) Kendrick Matthews, or even linebacker Anthony Green... it will be a tough one to decide most likely... but the MVP will be from Marshall...
other than that, the guide looks good, some stuff i don't agree with, but thats part of life, and well, thanks for giving us something to prove...

The bottom line with the Turner pick for pre-MVP was production. Turner is easily the top returning player on offense production wise. If Dulles gets into the playoffs, and we think they will, he'll obviously be a big reason why.
Jai Cavness was the other player I considered for MVP.

I am sure that the ET figures are right and that the Bell figures are wrong.
I don't know what happened but ET has been larger than Bell for a long time and according to the district at the end of the year THS had almost 300 students more than Bell. We have 10, 11 and 12 in high school and with 3600 for Bell it appears that perhaps ET's 9th grades were added to Bell in
error.

One minor, and relatively insignificant correction. Austin Westlake was in Region 2 only for the past two years. We were also in Region 2 for two years several years ago. In 2003, we were the large 5A Region IV champion and lost to eventual champ North Shore in the semi-finals.
