No, the 3rd place team faces Lufkin in the first round and hopefully it will be COVE.

I was just being a smart@...as much as I am trying...I just can't get into
centex football as much as East Texas football...I guess I'm spoiled.
And the fact that loudmouth Tom Barfield does all of the Waco High broadcasts doesn't help. That dude is an idiot.

Why do you feel this way about Cove, and I think Cove could run with Lufkin and any team in the state.

I hope would could get the chance to play Lufkin....ur from Waco...right....we would fare way,way better against Lufkin than Waco....anything can happen in this district....i think it'll finish like this....

1. Copperas Cove
2. AMC
3.Waco
4. Killeen Shoemaker
5. Harker Heights
6. Bryan
7. Temple
8. Belton

We gotta play @Waco,@AMC,@Bryan....I think we'll do just fine vs. Waco since it'll be like playing a home game(more fans than the other team,astroplay)....we've only lost there once since it was built(including playing Waco Uni.)But anything can happen since it is a rival game...I think the 13-5a title will come down to us and AMC just like last year...

You must have not been to a Cove-A&M, Cove-Waco, or A&M-Cove game lately. They are all pretty big games.

Yeah, I can say the same about ALL of the Waco tv announcers and radio announcers...>THEY SUCK

Yeah right...Cove won't have more fans IN Waco........THAT has never happened. Maybe against Waco U...but not us. I do have photos of the homecoming game against Cove in 2003 when Waco ripped them apart. It was mighty scarce over on the Cove side. About as bad as the fan turn-out Waco-Lufkin last year.

Waco is pretty much the only team that can hang with the old 12-5A schools......

Until Cove gets past the 1st round...then you can talk. IE Cedar Park

Lufkin would chew Cove up and spit them out.........

You make it sound like Cove rules the district when they don't..........Waco still owns that title and everyone knows Waco controls their own destiny on what happens in 13-5A. Cove has only played at Waco ISD twice against Waco High......2000 was when Derrick Johnson didn't play the first half......came in 2nd half and shut Cove down (no points) but we still lost by 6. The other time was 2003 and Waco won big-time.

Since 2000 Cove and Waco are tied up 2-2 ......Waco owns the all-time record 15-3

Confidence is great but over confidence leaves you sitt'in at the house in December. One appearance & Win in the State finals 4 years ago out of the past 20 years has Lufkin believing that they are 10ft Tall and bullett proof. Ain't nobody scared of Lufkin! And when Coach Outlaw leaves or retires Lufkin will settle back into its old ways.

You are absolutely right...Lufkin and Tyler Lee have been in 5A for tons of years and they like Longview have only one state title...this was the point I was trying to make when one asked for the list of powerhouse teams in the state...Lufkin and Tyler Lee are no more deserving to be called a Power house than Longview...one title to their name and yes they were recent titles, but the fact remain they only have one...and SV is still without a state title so again I make the point if titles rank you as a power house Longview is right in the mix...'37

Pony Express you have your facts all wrong. We have a good program here in Lufkin and the fact we have John Outlaw is the reason, just like SLC has Dodge or Tyler Lee has Owens to build and guide their programs. Let me give you a quick lesson in stats, Lufkin has been to the 5A finals or sem-finals 3 of the last 4 years and are 50 -7 over that time, that is better than most over that time, especially in College Station or Bryan. Your right, things may change someday when Outlaw retires, but we are not talking about that future are we? Yes, we are confident in ourselves, you have to be to be successful. Bullet proof, not hardly, example of that was the 2003 first round loss to Garland and the inability to beat Southlake twice in the semi-finals in 2002 and 2004, we are human like everybody else. The one thing WE DO, is respect all our opponents and we know how hard the road is to have success and what it takes to win against the better teams in the state. Since 1998, we have 7 straight playoff appearances, a playoff record of 20-6 and a 81 - 16 overall record over that period. Only Southlake or maybe Katy can equal that success over that time period. Your not afraid to play Lufkin? How about Southlake or Katy? Ask those boys about playing Lufkin? We will play you if you get there.

PackAttack,
Lufkin has had a good run since coach outlaw but not much of anything before that. To paraphrase a great Texas senator Loyd Benson "PackAttack I know SLC & Katy and Lufkin ain't no Southlake or Katy"
Southlake was winning long before coach Dodge came on the scene, SLC was winning back when coach Dodge was still wearing a Longhorn on his helmet and they have dominated at every level they have ever been a part of 3A, 4A & now 5A State Champs their run has been going on since the early 80's. The same type of story with Katy on Houston's west side.

I mean no disrespect to Lufkin, they have done a great job in turning their program around and they have a lot to be proud of, but that pride & overconfidence is probably what has hurt the team more than their opponents in late November & December. And just like Lufkin is not up to the long term consistenancy level & success of a Katy or SLC team yet A&M Consol is not to the level of success and consistenancy in 5A that Lufkin has recently obtained. A&M was a strong force in the 90's as 4A team but we have a ways to go before we can hang our hat up with the Big guys in the 5A bracket. I hope we do see you guys in the playoffs because the only way to get to that next level is through Lufkin - Katy & SLC. LP just keep doing what your doing and good luck just not too much when we meet up with you.

Pony, IF , " ain't nobody afraid to play Lufkin" is not disrespect then I don't know what else to say. Also don't compare Lufkin to what A&M Consolidated has accomplished in the past few years. You don't have the record to back it up. Your second post is more in line with the truth, in fact I gave my props to the SLC and Katy football programs in my previous post. Lufkin is 0-2 against Southlake and 2-0 against Katy in the past three years, so I would say that puts Lufkin in the middle somewhere.

It really doesn't matter to me what you or anyone else thinks about the Lufkin program. We are on several schools hit list right now, so one more won't make any difference. Old Jimmy Slaughter was coach for about four years (1991-1994)in Lufkin, John Outlaw took his place in 1995. Jim has done about the same for you guys as he did here during his time. Has lots of talent to work with, but can't get over the hump at playoff time.

I think Cove wins the district but anything can happen. Just look at a couple of years ago when Cove and Waco were picked to compete for the district championship and both schools finished in the bottom half.

These are my thoughts on the finish in 13-5A

1. Cove-All of the skilled players return. Cove's only question is the O-line and there are players that can step in to answer the question. Cove has the players to make a playoff run if they can stay focused.

2. A&M-Had a young team last year with many running backs that produced. If they stay healthy could compete to win the district. A&M has the best kickers in the district and in a close game have the ability to win.

3. Waco-Normally has the most tallent in the district but coaching has always focused on defense. Defense may win championships but your offense needs to score points. Waco must replace Sims who was most of their offense last year.

4. Bryan-Bryan hired a coach that got them to the playoffs. Bryan has talent but I think they are another year from putting it all together. Last year they were inconsistant from week to week.

5. Killeen Harker Heights-Harker Heights have players coming back that can produce points on offense. They might not have as much talent on defense as in the past.

6. Shoemaker-Had the first winning season in schools history last year. Shoemaker thinks they can be competitive. Will field a fast team. They will miss Roy Miller (Texas) on the defense.

7. Temple-Temple has a new coach after Tam left after his second year. Temple has a few athletes but not the team speed to compete with other schools in the district.

8. Belton-Last year Beltons offense left their defense on the field for most of the games. Offense must get better to be competitive because defense will not be as good as last year.

Overall Cove seems to be the most complete team. Only time will tell...

Cove has a good group of returning starters as well as some up and coming talent from the JV team. Although ranked high in the state polls in the pre-season the test will be on September 2nd with a date with Converse Judson. Playing Killeen on Aug 26th will be like a scrimage for that big game.
