2 players are in the running for the QB spot, last years backup Robert Griffin and All-District TE Logan Brock. IMO in the spring game Brock looked 10X better than Griffin, sharper passes, better decision making and not folding when the pressure is on you. Griffin is scared to take a hit and seemed as if he didnt wanna tuck and run the ball upfield when the guy has incredible speed. We should put Brock 6'3" 225 at QB. Morrison, who is the backup TE has great ability to take Brock's spot. People dont believe Cove will be any good this year, but go look at rivals.com, 8 players that will most likely go D1

well.....since i am a player
uhhhh.....griffin is a better qb than brock
i would rather have griffin back there because of play makin ability
and of course morrison isnt backup TE either
thats goodman just like last year
but morrison is a waste of a body....no hands, non-athletic
just MO

Ask the o-line who they'd rather have back there. You might be surprised at the answer. It's funny how as a lineman you just know who should be qB'ing. The guy you have confidence in. The guy you know will make the play if you hold your block just a second or two longer.

I believe if Griffin gets his head outta you know what he will be better than Garner. And I did see Morrison playin some TE the other night

I will be the first to admit that i do not have confidence in Griffin however i do believe he has the ability to do great things if he was not scared, held onto the snaps, and would settle down a little.

I hope for the best, Garner and others will be hard to replace but Jack knows what he is doing and it is about time to start doing it all over again.

Go DAWGS

Spring Game scrimmage has real kickin' ending

By JOHN EUBANKS

"Kyle Mathews booted a 49-yard field as time expired to lift the Cove team to a 17-14 win over the Dawgs’ team in the annual spring football game Friday night at Bulldawg Stadium."

That’s the ending coach Jack Welch envisioned when he sent Mathews into the game with three seconds left. Welch’s ad-lib provided a thrilling, albeit re-written, ending to the game.
The Dawgs, consisting of the second offense and first defense, were moving left to right when they appeared to gain a first down on third and 4 from their 47. A 9-yard run all but sewed up a 16-14 win with 00:03 on the clock.
But all of a sudden, an official stepped off 15 yards to the 32 and signaled Cove ball.
"The other team fumbled and got a penalty," Welch said, tongue in cheek.
Mathews then booted his 49-yarder barely over the crossbar, as Robert Griffin corralled a high snap and put it down in time.
The scoreboard then showed Cove 17, Dawgs 14, as the crowd of a few hundred cheered.
"The real score’s 16-14," Welch said, after addressing the team. "I just created that other (scenario) because I wanted to put pressure on Kyle to have to go out there and kick a long field goal and win the ball game.
"But realistically, I created that, so it didn’t count. The other team (Dawgs) really won, which was the ‘2’ offense and ‘1’ defense."
Welch said he was "pretty pleased" with the scrimmage. "This was a fun scrimmage. One of the funner scrimmages we’ve ever had," he said.
"I think the thing that’s obvious to me is we’ve got a good two-deep. What we were doing was running our ‘1’ offense and ‘2’ defense against our ‘2’ off and ‘1’ defense, but we would interchange some players. That’s how we went ahead and kept offense in the same (white jersey) color and defense in the same (blue jersey) color, because we have guys that are battling. Really and truly, there are a lot of guys it doesn’t matter whether they’re first or second (team).
"The thing that I was most impressed with is our depth. I think it’s obvious our defense is playing some good ball. We were pretty bland (on offense) too, not wanting to give too much … do too much."
The game had four eight-minute quarters and a short halftime. The first offense, led by junior quarterback Robert Griffin was forced to punt on its first possession and had an interception on its second one.
The second offense, led by senior quarterback Logan Brock, scored on its second possession, as hard-running senior Billy Abreu capped a seven-play drive with a 1-yard run. Mathews booted the extra point to make it 7-0 with 6:36 left in the second quarter.
After the 1s again punted, the 2s took over at their 28 and marched 78 yards in five plays. Brock’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Rashad Hawk capped the drive, making it 14-0 after the point-after, with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
The 6-3 Hawk used his height advantage against the defensive back to grab the ball in the end zone.
The 1s cut it 14-7 with under two minutes left in the half, as Griffin directed a nine-play, 70-yard drive. Griffin capped it with a 39-yard pass on fourth and 5, to Hawk, who again used his height advantage to outleap the defensive back just inside the pylon.
The scored remained 14-7 until seven minutes left in the fourth quarter when Royel Johnson tackled Griffin in the end zone for a safety, giving the Dawgs a 16-7 lead.
The right-handed Griffin was rolling out to his left, on third and seven from the 4, when defensive back Johnson pulled him down.
The Cove team cut it to 16-14 with 1:48 left to play, when Griffin threw a 10-yard TD pass to Donel Greer in the back of the end zone.
The 2 offense then took over and ran four plays, before the fifth one was negated by "penalty," allowing Mathews to come in and boot his clutch field goal.
The game’s highlights included two stellar defensive plays, including one on a goal-line stand. Late in the third quarter, with the score 14-7, Johnson intercepted a Griffin pass at the 14 and returned it to the other 49, where he was tackled by Griffin.
On the next play, Brock hit Hawk for a 50-yard run-and-catch to the 1. After Abreu ran the ball twice for no gain, linebacker Tanner Brock met him in the hole on third down for still on gain.
Then on fourth down, Colten Goodman was stopped short of the goal on the first play of the fourth quarter..
"Defense did very well," Welch said. "I was very impressed with that goal-line stand, and Tanner Brock stepping up in that middle and taking on that running back. I thought that was big.
"Royel Johnson had a good interception and return. Mario Goins (had) real good coverage on Rashad (Hawk) down the sideline that one time. And Rashad Hawk (also) had a big night."
Unofficially, Brock was 6-of-12 for 97 yards. Griffin was 7-of-20 for 118 yards. Among his dozen or so runs, Griffin had gains of 18 and 11, and had a 35-yard negated by penalty.
"I thought Logan Brock had a big night, quarterback and tight end-wise," Welch said. "And I thought Robert (Griffin) showed good signs, and it’s just a matter of getting him more and more playing time.
“He’s just a pup. So the more we can just keep playing him and keeping him in there, I think he’ll just keep growing.
"And that’s why I’m looking for a great seven-on-seven (season) this summer. I think that will help our offense mature."
‘I felt good about our kicking, too," Welch added. "Both punters did a good job, Mario Goins and Kyle Mathews. And of course, Kyle made every extra point, and kicked that field goal. Put it right in there."
With an assist from his coach, of course.
