An NBC News study found that 77% of Amercian employers are using facebook as part of background checks on employment applications, and this percentage is growing. Of the 77% of employers, 35% have found information on facebook worthy enough to reject applications. When college students were asked for their response to this, they said they didn't think potential employers should have the right to do this. Employers stated that "when you submit an employment application with your signature, you are granting us the legal right to look into your background." Employers contact the Universities and ask them for permission to access facebook to search for certain individuals that are interested in working for them. The Universities give them access without hesitation. NBC News stated that many young people think they can put whatever they want on websites and will not be held accountable for it. They are finding out differently.

i love it- as long as the database is 100% accurate. Too much is riding on their info- see credit reporting agencies...

Am I behind the times or what? What the hell is facebook? S'pose I could look it up...

Don't you kinda forfeit your rights to privacy when you publish your life on the internet?

Any college student could tell you better that me. As best I can tell, facebook is like myspace except it is exclusively for college students who are enrolled at a university with a university issued student e-mail address. College students can find each other by first and last name, and can create a profile page and converse with each other as well as post pictures of themselves. Very much like myspace, except your real name is your user name which makes these students sitting ducks. Especially when they post pictures of themselves getting drunk, doing drugs, posing nude, and anything else unimaginable. This is why employers are tapping into facebook to do background checks on college students that are seeking employment with them.

Facebook and myspace are both bad. They are part of the reason that people in society cannot communicate face to face. It is always easier to hide behind a screen and be someone that they aren't/

Using Facebook as a High School Student is stupid because its coping College Kids (Its my opinion and I am in High School and I am not going to use it until when I am in College or going to be).

I have a Facebook myself, and to say the least, it is an incredibly clean website. There really isnt much fowl play there because, in order to register, you have to have you University-issued E mail Address.

As far as employers checking, I really dont have a problem with it. I keep my facebook clean, as do most people who have one.

As for Myspce, I think its the devil, hehe.

I thought Facebook started a high school section.

Some of the seniors that get accepted early to their universities also get their email addresses early, so I guess they could set up a Facebook page early too.

As a Facebook user, I can say that it is about 5 times as clean as myspace. As previously stated myspace IS the devil. You cannot edit your facebook with html codes which keeps it so much cleaner. It was originated as a site to help college classmates get together and study. If you have a Facebook, you can only view profiles of people in your "network" (your university, city, or high school), which makes it hard to believe companies are actually checking the sites, im sure if they really wanted to check your profile they would try their best to look at it, but I highly doubt Facebook gives out 'god' accounts with unlimited access, I just think its too hard for the company to actually check for information thats not that juicy.

Facebook is directed to a more mature and knowledgable audience, thats why you see myspace getting all the flack... its geared to younger teens that dont know better.
