All right you Thursday morning refs, make the ruling:
Team A has 1st and goal on the team B 5 yd line.
A34 fumbles into the B endzone. Near the endline, B67 is on the ground and touching out of bounds while he makes contact with the loose ball.
A51 gains possesion of the ball while completely inbounds while B67 is touching the ball.
What's the ruling?

Touchback...team B ball...or it could be a saftey for team a if b67 touched ball first then stepped out of bounds.

It should be team A's ball where ever A34's feet where before he fumbled the ball forwards into the endzone, because if anyone touches the ball inbounce while their feet or any parts are out it is not a possession(it's out).
2nd down and goal

Yes it would be Team A's ball where A34 lost possesion. There can be no forward progress on a fumble unless regained be fumbling party. ie if A34 regained then TD. And also B67 never had possession so it doesn't matter. If he were to gain possession then it would be ruled out of bounds and a touchback for team B.

Just FYI, pulled this scenario off of an HS refs forum. Answer surprised me a little, but I'll wait for more input before I post the ruling.

I think once it rolls into the endzone and is not recovered by the guy who fumbled it....it's a touchback.....even before the guy from team B touches it so it dosent matter if he was out of bounds or not.

Defender touching the ball extends the ball ob - so ball is dead and considered fumbled ob by the offense. Touchback -- team B's ball on their own 20. Don't argue or I'll flag you.

I would say touchback also but i am not 100 percent sure? He touched the ball while out of bounds in the endzone so you would think it would be a dead ball and a touchback?

We have a winner. Dada and Pack08 were on it also.
Here is the explanation of the ruling...
"It is considered a "Ball Out of Bounds" the instant it is touched by a player OB (or an official who is OB). The ball is dead when and where touched, so since B touched the ball before A gained possession a touchback is the correct ruling. B ball on 20."

I saw your post right after I put the ruling up. Nice one.
That's a tricky sequence of events to rule on. Now imagine all of that happening full speed, and trying to get it right.

Thanks for the quarter that went in to my ego bucket. I was ringing my bell loudly so you would hear and donate. ;) I could not imagine how tough it is to be an official?

A thankless job that's for sure. I know refs can't see everything. My only real expectation of an official crew is consistency (IE, call the game the same way for each side).

I do not have the temper to be a ump or referee!!, and that is why i have never even considered it. Thankless job like you said. Somebody is usually going to think your wrong and somebody is usually is going to call you a moron. Just the way it is.

The officials that get to me are the ones that have a flag are whistle and feel like they should be a major part of the game. They call way to many holding calls or flag every minor infraction. Truth be told there is holding every play, agood offensive line coach teaches it. But it should not be called unless it is flagrant. Control the game, do not overshadow it.

Good point there Bubba.
Good officials have a way of blending into the overall action.

we almost had that exact situation in the katy vs. hastings game this year. Will thompson fumbled into the endzone and the scramble ensued....luckily we fell on it before anyone out of bounds touched it.....TOUCHDOWN....we were sure to give Will the "LEON LETT" treatment though!!!!!....lol
