The majority of the Texas Longhorn 2005 recruiting class reported to Austin in June to get a head start on their classwork and some informal workouts, but there were a couple of players that put their plans on hold for a month or so for various reasons.

Jamaal Charles will report to Austin in early July.
One such player, running back Jamaal Charles, took a little time to participate in summer track, but he said this week that he's ready to begin his life as a Longhorn. The blue-chip running back out of Port Arthur Memorial is expecting to report to Austin in early July, and he's already feeling a wide variety of emotions.

"I'm nervous and excited," he said. "I'm kind of nervous to be away from home and start the whole college life, but I'm excited about getting up there with the team and starting some football."

To help pass the time before he officially steps foot onto the Forty Acres, Charles has been busy in the weightroom and on the practice field, where he and some other athletes in the Port Arthur area have been taking part in some 7-on-7 action.

"I'm already bigger and stronger. I was at 185 but now I'm a little over 190. I'd like to be at about 197 when I get there," he said. "I'm faster too. My coach timed me at a 4.29 not too long ago. And I'm working out a lot as a receiver and things like that, just trying to get better all around."

As one of the more highly regarded prospects in the Horns' 2005 class, many are expecting Charles to come in and contribute to the Texas offense as a freshman. The four-star prospect was one of the state's most productive players as a senior, and he has a rare combination of size and speed that could allow him to get some early touches.

"I'm going to come up there and try to start," Charles said. "It's going to be tough but that's what I want to do. If not, I definitely want to get in there as a back-up to try to get some carries."

In doing so, Charles will have to win over running backs coach Ken Rucker. The first-year Longhorn assistant has already shown that he is a tremendous recruiter, and Charles said he's looking forward to the chance to learn under Rucker's tutelage.

"I talk to him about once a week. He's a Christian man and he's a really good person. I feel like God led me to him for a reason," said Charles. "Whenever I talk to him, he always has something good to say and he'll be a good coach to play for."

Along with running some summer track, Charles has been attending summer school classes in English and in Math, and he said once those are completed that he'll be on his way to Austin. If he can live up to some of the lofty expectations that have been put on him, he could be a name to watch when the Horns open summer practices.

"I'm ready to get there and get to work," Charles said.
