View Full Version : Abe Martin update?

Hey all - I'm too lazy to go find the previous thread. Anyone heard the latest on the Abe Martin field /renovation project? Someone told me the contractor was now saying the rain has them "behind schedule". You knew that was coming - they lose one day to rain and now they're behind. LP hosts Ike on Sept. 2, that ain't far off.
BTW - drove by the new South Dallas stadium - I guess it's the new Jesse Owens complex (you can see it from I-20) - it is quite impressive.

Thanks Lobo - nice shots taken. Since those pics is when we had the heavy rains -- it appears that not alot has been done from about 7/7-7/15. They say the field goes down very quickly - but the initial projection was to be complete by Aug. 2 - not too far away.

Thats what happened with us...
We had a big rainful last year when they were about to put the carpet down and it screwed literally everything up...Thats why we have the wrinkles cause the cement or something didnt settle right beacuse of the rain.

yeah we were on a huge dry dought in lufkin just a week ago and we get a few days of rain and that gives them an excuse. they were just waiting for that one!! i have never seen a project be on time. there is always delays and excuses. goes along with construction. i do not know why they bother setting a date?? should be nice when it is done though, the new state of the art safe turf and a scoreboard that is bigger then waco's. hopefully seating will be next.

Are they gonna add more seats? Looks kind of small? Can any of you Pack fans that were at The Woodlands game last year tell me how it compares in size to Moorehead Stadium?

The Abe Martin ground work was completed last week. The rain has not been a problem for weeks now because the new drainage system had been installed under about 3000 tons of crushed limestone from Georgetown, Texas. The new artificial grass installation will begin on the 25th.
The new scoreboard and replay screen will be installed and in operation this week.

abe martin has about 10,000 i am almost positive?? Seating is a problem at lufkin because of the huge crowds. it is almost impossible to get a season ticket anymore. you have to get lucky. i have 8 that i am holding onto forever. lol

What about for the visitors? I know we will have a huge following fro this game! How does it compare in size of our stadium?

There are a couple of problems with the visitor side at Abe Martin. First, there are only 3600 seats on that side and second, there are Lufkin fans that fill up the visitors general admission section because there is no room on the home side, that leaves only 2400 seats for visiting fans and their band and drill teams. The home side is larger appox. 7200, but is mostly all season ticket holders, plus the Lufkin band and drill team. Lufkin ISD may need to bring in temporary seating for The Woodlands game and put the bands in the endzones. There is a need for more seating, everyone from the average fan to the school administration knows there is a need here. There are big issues with money and ADA, so I don't see the problem going away anytime soon. Remember, if there are approximately 10,000 seats at Abe Martin, the bands and drill teams take take up 1000 of those seats, leaving only 9000 for paying customers. The main difference between Abe and Moorhead is height and age of the stadium. Abe is 40 rows high, while Moorehead is lower profiled at about 28 rows high and Abe was built in 1973 and has had little renovations done until this year.

I think Coach O'Quinn told me that it holds like 10,200. Safe to say its like 10,000.

Talked to Mrs. Davis who is the supervisor of ticket sales and she said that they have 9333 seats/tickets allowed for a game at Abe Martin. They can sell standing room only if needed for the grass areas. Now that is not counting the seating for the two bands and drill teams. You do the math, 10,000 is a good round number to use for Abe Martin but it is probably a little less than that.

Well, Duke here is the deal, we had a sponsor that was willing to pay for the new artificial grass surface and the new replay screen. The seating issue involves big dollars, which is millions more than a sponsor could deal with and the school just doesn't have the funds. We are not The Woodlands, we don't have the same economic advantages to pass multi-million dollar bond packages to remodel our stadium or build a new stadium or a new high school like College Park. If there is any big money here in Lufkin, they don't invest it in the school. I think there is a future plan, two or three years down the road to have some improvements made for the seating at Abe Martin. Until then Duke, you will have to get there early. I think after this year, you guys in The Woodlands won't need to worry about coming back to Lufkin, because you probably won't get to see much of Lufkin after the 2005. Most likely in the 2006 realignment we will be moved out of 14-5A and into a new district in the Humble area. It is really too bad because I think we probably could have developed a nice rivalry over time.

I agree! I am not gonna be happy once we move out of this district, I think playing Lufkin has been the best team we have played in district even going back to the old McCullough High School days! Gonna be sad once we start building up that rivalry and then get realigned! About the stadium seating, I was just joking, your field is better then ours!

Man you are really starting to get old. You may have some funny posts sometimes but your smart aleck remarks are getting old. Who ever said that a Jumbotron would help the team. That is just about as cheap or sorry as me saying How is you drinking beer going to make you more of a man, or why in the heck do you need a computer or cell phone? That isn't going to make you a better human being. The truth is you probably drink beer and have a computer and cell phone because you just want to. When you started drinking beer were you keeping up with the party crowd? Are you keeping up with the Jones' by having a computer and a cell phone? I really doubt any of the coaches, players or fans are foolish enough to think the new additions to the stadium will make the Panthers a better team. Yes we need more seating in the stadium but obviously you do not know anything about why it has not been added yet. I have a feeling more people are annoyed by you on here and in person then what you realize. But you probably don't care. So I take it you have a great life huh. I can bet there are thousands of people that would say you nor I have a life If we are on the internet posting messages on a forum about Texas High School Football. Especially after 12am.

Wide, I thought you were our friend. So it is okay for Waco ISD to have a replay screen and we can't, right? I don't hear you bashing them for their nice screen and great facilities.
In between your Comedy Central specials, you can be very hard lined opinionated about other peoples business.
You know Wide, there has not been one person on this forum state that a replay screen will make your team play better, not one. I have heard everything from people wanting to stay with paper run throughs for their teams and that is it is against tradition and a sin to have a re-usable run through with velcro strips to why people have screwed up football programs and traditions because they don't play on real grass anymore.
To all of that I say BS, because every school can do what they want and I say go for it, whatever you want is fine with me. If you want to play in a cow pasture and use car lights to light the field, do it. What I don't want to hear is a someone sitting in the A/C behind a computer in Waco drinking beer telling us what we should and should not do in Lufkin about our athletic facilities. The same kind of people that tell others to get a life are usually the ones like you sitting on their tail and not doing anything in their community to get improvements like this for the school and the kids. I am not one of those people.
Maybe all this progress is not going to make a team play better or educate the kids better, but that is not the point here is it. I bet if adding a new artificial surface and a new replay scorebaord included free beer you would be all for it and yelling....bring it on baby!
I have a life Thank You and it is working to try and improve my community for the future of our kids in Lufkin.

Well put PackAttack. Especially the part about having a life. Usually people like that are all about themselves and what is in it for them. If it doesn't benefit them in any way then it is not good. Oh well. Maybe he is really a good person but the beer makes the worst come out of him. Speaking of beer that is funny what you said about that. If it was free he just might be all gung ho about that. Very Sad.

"other people's business"? I am from Lufkin and went to LHS...
so how am I giving opinions on other people's business?' I also have
two daughters that are in school in Lufkin......I'd say I'm entitled to an opinion on the subject.
My point is.............................they need more seats.
Not jumbotrons and fake grass and bells and whistles. SEATS!!
That should have come first. Before anything else.....they should
have added seats.
I could care less if WISD has a jumbotron.
And just so you will know....I don't have a cell phone. Never have owned one....never carried one...never borrowed one...never rented one.
I think they are-------------ready for this?-----UNNECESSARY.
If you want to talk to me that bad....you can wait until I get home.
Like I have stated on other threads...I love the plain teams. Plain unis...Plain helmets, plain stadium, and plain ol' good players. Lufkin used to be one of those teams. I hate to see them get caught up in all this unnecessary stuff. That's all.
And for the record I had two beers last night. I worked over 12 hours yesterday though...so maybe that's why I was a little grumpy.Sorry....

There has been plenty posted on why seats have not been added at Abe, so I am not going to try and go into great detail. It has everything to do with the American Disabilities Act and the cost to make that stadium compliant by today's standards. Your talking about several million dollars to expand seating at Abe Martin.
Wide you like things plain and ordinary, you don't like change, where do you get that humorous side ? I used to feel the same about change until I got run over by progress.

My humorous side comes from years of being pretty much an only child (my sister is 8 years older than me and moved out at 17) I was a latch-key kid that was forced to entertain myself. I learned to laugh at everything...or try and make other people laugh. That coupled with the fact that my Dad is a Marine with very little patience and ruled our house with an iron fist....made me a smart@ with a short fuse. Thousands of dollars in therapy and thousands of Miller Lites later...................I'm still working on it. Sorry.
I make way for progress most of the time. When it makes sense. When it doesn't........I question it.

need one...that's it. I am the only one with enough balls to say that's what it is.
And I'm not "that way" I'm just saying that it is unecessary...that's all.

HS football is "supposed" to be about the kids. Not how much money we can bring in. Or how cool we look with our fancy scoreboard. Somewhere...Bear Bryant and Tom Landry are rolling in their graves. Because this is not what it's all about. Of course ol' Tom had ol' school beliefs and wouldn't change his ideas.........we all know what that got him don't we?
If it's all about money...then let's put Peltier stickers on all the helmets....Dixon furniture patches on the unis....Make Outlaw were a Ray's drive-in cap during all interviews...why stop at the scoreboard?
Let's pimp these kids for all they are worth. Because that is what it's all about right? money?.............Meanwhile, the same kids have outdated and sub-par books and are far behind the rest of the state in test scores and learning as a whole...but hey ...we got a fancy scoreboard so (bleep) 'em.

Well if you are going to go that rout the same could be said about college football. They players are "pimped out" in college ball. Do you complain about all that your beloved Longhorns have. And why do you say more seats at Abe. That would not help the team play better either but you sure make it a point to say that seats at abe should have been a priority. Yes the stadium is packed out on game night but I have yet to see anyone turned away from watching the game. If you want to talk about education then I would think you would say forget adding additional seating and use all the funds for books etc.... So which is it? Do you want more seats or more books?
wide-e-wide
07-24-2005, 12:24 AM
Of course I would say "new" books over any of this crap.
I moved to Waco over a year ago. My daughter was an honor roll
student in Lufkin. Within the first month of school here, she was struggling.
She was waaaaaaaaay behind. That alone tells you how much emphasis is put on education in Lufkin.
As far as the Longhorns go............your comparing apples to oranges (burnt oranges)
The players at UT aren't minors...they are adults. And they are pimped by the school ...your right.
And now you officially know someone that was turned away.....tried to go see Lufkin at Abe last year and couldn't get a ticket. I guess if that happens this year...I can just park alongside Lufkin Ave. and watch the replays on the jumbotron huh?
I'm just saying......if I were a teacher at LHS and saw my students with old books and sub-par test scores....and LISD was putting up big scoreboards and fake grass...I would be raisin' 9 kinds of hell that's all.

Yeah I saw it on tv the other day. Of course I had heard about it awhile back. I was wondering the same thing too. How in the world did they put one on the north team and the other on the south? Maybe the line was at AC like you said. When I saw Lane at the end of the school year he was running sprints with Zeke Fancher on one of the practice fields at the high school. He still looked good as far as his size goes. They interviewed him the other day and he still looked about the same. He definitely did not look like he was 267. If he did get that big it must be the good grub he is being fed at A&M. But I doubt he is really that big. I am sure you know they will be meeting up again in the years to come since Jermichael will be at UT. Growing up I was always a UT fan but have been an A&M fan for the last 3 years because of Reggie and the other former Lufkin players that are there or are heading there. My son is a big UT fan. I like them both but now the edge goes to the team with the Lufkin boys.

That sounds about right. I just knew he looked about 250 at the most but 245 sounds about right. Do you (or does he)expect him to get some playing time this year? Of course he told me he expected to play next year but then most guys alway hope to do that anyway. I know the step up is tougher than most think, especially at the Division I level. Everything depends on what the coaches want first, then on how hard he works in August will determin whether he will play or is red shirted. You got to remember that he hasn't even put on the pads against the big boys yet. The best thing is to wait and see what happens. As far as the Mcneal and Lane combo, I don't know because I want what is best for Lane. I really think Reggie should have red shirted his first year and I feel the same about Lane. it helps them get use to college life and gives them a year to develope and grow up as a player. That way you don't waste a whole year on the bench.

Yeah that is what I thought. You make a good point about red shirting. That makes alot of sense. It will still be exciting to watch Lane develop over the next several years. Oh by the way, is he going to be a fullback or running back? I am looking forward to watching Reggie have a great year.

Unless my memory is really bad - they simply gutted the middle of the scoreboard and stuck the video screen portion there- but I guess that could be a complete new scoreboard. It's not Reliant Stadium quality, but not bad either.
Question for the forum - the real kicker for replay will be the ability of the roving cameras to film professionally and the editor to pick the correct shot right? I'm thinking the average fan may envision Monday Night Football quality - whereas I know If I were manning that camera - I might miss the ball altogether. So....unless you have really good cameral volunteers or are willing to pay professionals, the instant replay may be a letdown?

If there is any money left Wide, we will send you a case of beer and you can chase Eli Mae around the cement pond or whatever you do best.
The score board at Abe is only four (4) years old, it has been reconditioned and repainted. There are others that are similar to what Lufkin has, the only difference is we dont have the ability to digitally dispaly a teams name on the scoreboard and we did not include a advertising flip board in the middle.
Wide, you should be proud because we saved about $35,000 not buying a new scoreboard, that way we can buy more books and shoes for all the kids.

Why put a big LP in the middle, when we have always had the big Panther there? They were going to have a big purple helmet with PACK on it until some of us talked them out of it. Yea, it is looks good as it is. The Purple endzones would have been nice, maybe next year that could be added. This field is the same type, Real Grass TM PRO, as installed in Texas Stadium and the AlamoDome, same crew and company , Sportfield.

The hubcab spinners that come in a box of 4 at Wal-Mart? I must have some of those. Forget the real ones.......... Now I think the field looks good and the screen looks nice but I know the seating issue will not go away for alot of Lufkin fans. Maybe one day in the near future we will get more seating.......and you can have your special seat when you come visit. As for me I only had season tickets for 2001. Since then I have been sitting on the visitor side for most but not all of the games. In 2002 I saw an old friend watching the game with his grandfather and uncle and since then we always sit together and watch the game. You probably know Solly. They love to sit on that side and plus we usually get great seats. It gets crazy sometimes with our fans and the opponents fans talking alot of noise. It is really funny. Plus their band usually jams much better then ours during the game. It pumps me up and makes me want to go out there and play(and get my head knocked off) in the game too. Maybe all of us old men in this forum should get together somewhere and play some football against each other. That would be trip...Are you game?

Hey PA that is my long time friend you are talking about and i almost could guarantee you would not say that to his face!! I have been friendly with you for a long time besides a few times in the past when you accused me of strange things, but when you decide to insult my friend you insult me. Sometimes you take anal to a whole other level PA. I bet if you weighed 238 about 200 of that would be anal weight!! ;) The guy was saying a joke on a football site and there was no reason to get personal in my opinion. If you do not like his opinion on the stadium fine!!, i do not agree with it either, but you do not have to get personal. We are spending almost 2 g's on stadium advertising because we think the scoreboard will be such a great success by the way. We would have bought the gold package but they were bought out. Mike said they are basically having to turn down money because of the response that they have to show the football game, players etc etc sometime?? lol I am thrilled to hear that!! I personally am excited about the stadium and how it looks now!! We would be lying to ourself if we both said seating was not a problem though. It obviously is!! One step at a time i know!!

Pack08, he may be your long time friend, but you do not need to take offense, it was not aimed at you. What Wide said about Abe Martin was not meant as a joke, it was just his uninformed opinion. It is easy to have those opinions when you are making them from afar and were not part of the work. I also have grown tired and weary of his beer humor on a high school site. I am very involved in the advertising packages and stadium issues personally, so that probably makes me more defensive about these statements than anything else. By the way thank you for your advertising support, you will like what you see this year. P08, I realize that our stadium is not Waco ISD, Dragon Stadium or Grande Stadium in Midland. I know there is still much to do to bring Abe Martin up to date with other venues. That was not my real problem with his statement. His joke about coming to a Panther game drunk, whether he meant it as a joke or for real was not funny to me. I was not anal, I took offense that he implied it would be funny to show up at a high school game drunk. I am sorry if I offend you or Wide, but I didn't think that was something for him to try to joke about. PA08, what strange accusations are you talking about, I don't recall ever doing that.

By the way I get around quite well, been there and done what you guys have talked about doing when you all were younger. I am older now, so I move in much more structured circles now than I used to travel. God, family and marriage have worked well for me. Wow!! I had no idea you used to my neighbor PA?? Wideman lived on Allendale and I was in the crazy circle called Tanglewood with the infamous and very idiotic R Jones!! He belongs where he is at and that is prison. I probably have fought him 30 times and i think i lost 29!! lol I know i got one win in because i never will forget that one but that was about it!! He was older and bigger though. I would never back down though!! Marvo was no match for him either. I used to idolize that kind of tough person and i tried to imitate the tough guy in my late teens and early 20's in hs and college but now i know that kind of stuff is beyond silly and it gets you no where in life but prison or death. God, family, and job comes first now!! You learn with age and i learned the hard way when i almost died. lol I still have a long way to go and i still enjoy some beer now and then i must admit. Now i am really curious who you are because i have no idea?? PA, you take some things too serious for me but you probably have your reasons. The few things in the past was when you accused me of wanting to secretely take down the panther program or something because i said a few things that you thought i should not that were considered inside info by you. You now know that i am just a huge panther fan that is just excited about my alma mater and what i said was in innocence. That was several years ago i believe?? I have nothing against you at all!! You seem like a good and decent human being but i am a very very loyal friend and when i feel somebody is coming at my friends i have to defend. It is just my nature. This is forgotten about as far as i am concern and it is absolutely not a big deal at all!! It was just a disagreement on a football board nothing more. Maybe we will meet at a game and can have a convo about the pack because i know we are both huge supporters of the team. Heck, I might have already have met you for all i know?? Hey but i can relate to what you were saying, i have to be very careful what i joke about around my father because he get irriated with me sense of humor at times. lol Hopefully we can talk in the future and you can see my million kids!! ;) ok just 4 and wide has me smoked!! LMAO at Nugrape!! :) Come on wide it does not look that bad!! My grandparents from Iowa saw it a few years ago and they could not believe that was a hs stadium and said it was the best they ever seen. If they ever saw a beautiful stadium like Waco's etc etc they would be in for a real shock. I guess in Texas we are just spoiled when it comes to our hs football stadiums!! Funny how many in Lufkin think Abe is a dump but most other hs from other states would absolutely kill to have a stadium like that. I think it looks ok but i do agree it needs a little more of a facelift. The scoreboard and turf will be nice. I completely agree with that!! I thought seating should be the top priority but i am sure there was a reason. I am sure the cost's would have been crazy!! But you right that it would pay off in the long run. I think the scoreboard and turf will payoff also. More teams ranging from 1a to 4a will play playoff games at abe now because of the perks of the turf and the scoreboard. That means some good revenue for LISD

That reminds me of a story an older Master Cheif told me when I was in the Navy. It seems that the citizens of Norfolk,Va. were complaining about drunk
Sailors (imagine that) tearing up the city...fighting...and carrying on...So they wanted all the Navy to leave the Hampton roads area...Long story short...And old Admiral had every one of the Sailors in the area paid in $2 dollar bills the next pay cycle....Wasn't long before all of the local businesses were complaining about this swarm of $2 bills they were getting.
The Admiral's response...."Exactly....wonder where all those $2 dollar bills are coming from?"
hahahahaha As far as I know that is a true story.

I am not an engineer, and somebody has probably already thought about this, but it seems to me like the only place to add seating is in the north end zone. That is unless you want to add to the visitor's side and who wants to do that!
Also, I am hopeful that the supposed extra revenue the turf and scoreboard will generate will go toward future enhancements at Abe Martin. Does anyone know if that is the plan?

I was looking at that visitor seating at Abe, too. The seating is OK on the Lufkin side, but there are way too few seats on the visitor side. The stands go high and they can add on both ends. End zone seats would work, too. PSJA has a stadium that's starting to look like Bristol Motor Speedway!
There is a great beauty in seats on the visitor side. You get more playoff games, the other team brings more fans, and Lufkin people can sit over there, too. If I have the girls with me, I sit on the visitor side at Judson games when there aren't a lot of fans over there. You can't beat having a good seat and plenty of room.

When there are long periods of wet weather in Lufkin, the kids can't go to expanded stadium seating to practice, but they can go to an artificial grass field and indoor facility that we now will have.
These improvements will go a long way towards providing relief for the major overcrowded conditions that exist in the LHS athletic complex and for the band during bad weather and wet field conditions. This was the main reason these improvements were made first by the school district. The bonus in this deal, is now the artificial grass and replay screen will also provide revenue from playoff games, band competitions and advertising that can go for future improvements on campus and may help add the needed seating for Abe Martin. The current renovations are something that fills an immediate need and can be used year round. Added seating for Abe Martin was not the most crucial need, your talking about only 5 games per year against investing in facilities you can use 365 days a year if needed. At some point in the future the Lufkin school district will need to address the biggest financial issue regarding the ADA ( American Disabilities Act) regulations for adding seating at Abe Martin, but for now the current improvements were a good first step by the Lufkin ISD to address immeditate needs for the kids at the school.
You see there is more to this whole deal than just adding seats and with ADA involved, everything you say about seating is easier said than done at this point. I don't believe there is anyone in the school district that doesn't realize that expanded seating is necessary. The question is how can it be done to meet ADA compliance and at what cost? That is your 5 or 6 million dollar question.

Guys, there's almost always plenty of room on the visitor's side. I get there about 6-tell the ladies i want a reserved seat up high(row 30 and up). With no Nac, Lee, Longview, or Katy on the home schedule this year there will be plenty of room. The Woodlands game will be the only game where the visitor side will be packed.

Just got back from Abe guys - still sweating - lol - hot and sticky today. The field is looking great, goal posts are being planted and the black stuff looks like it's down.
I also thought this was interesting..... As many know that enter from the north side - we have a group of 10-40 freeloaders that sit in their lawn chairs on a grassy area outside the chain link fence on the north side. Not a bad seat really - certainly not for free. Well, when I went by today workers were putting the aluminum strips inside the chain link fence to make it where you can't see through the fence - kind of like what you may see in some folks backyard - a privacy chain link fence if you will.
Some may disagree, but I say bravo to this move. Let the freeloaders buy a ticket and pay their share of these renovations. I guess someone could stand in their folding chair and still kind of see over the chain link fence - but it would be no fun. Good move I say by the administrators.
The covered practice field is not looking good. The updated "completion" date is now "November" (I'm assuming November 30th) and that appears more than a stretch. I drove by and saw one guy with a shovel goofing off. Granted it was cloudy and a bit wet, but, hey, the players were practicing hard right beside this lone worker. I wonder if this thing gets done before '05 ends?

Like i said...unless you just gotta sit on the home side...there is PLENTY of room on the visitors side. You might have to climb some steps but I always sit on the 50 yard line. This year the game against the Woodz will be the only one crowded on the visitor side. Last year the Nacogdoches game was the first time I have ever seen them put people on the grass. If you want to see the game there are enough seats. The Conroe and Klein schools dont travel like Longview and Tyler Lee. Some more seating on the home side would be nice but personally I would rather sit on the 50 yard line on the visitor side than to have a crappy seat on the 10 yard line on the home side.

Hey Wide all you have to do is tell me how many tickets you need and I will be there early to get them. Then I can meet you at the gate and give them to you. I am usually one of the first ones at the ticket booth on the visitor's side. My son and I are crazy because we just like to sit there in the stands and watch the pre-game warmup.

Jimmy's??? Can't say I have never been there but that was over 10 years ago. Not the best of places and not somewhere I care to go to again. But hey that is just me. I am all for meeting up at the game with people on this board though.
