Austin Bowie's band is doing a great job this year, especially considering the director passed away this summer.

They won the Bands of America Arlington Regional for the first time, beating bands from LD Bell and Flower Mound, among others.

They also won the Westlake Marching Festival.

The show is very good. They still have some artsy pieces that I don't quite understand, but that seems to be what judges like nowadays. But there is a lot of movement, crisp sound and when they all play, it's LOUD. The color guard is also probably the best I've seen at Bowie.

My dad saw them live a couple weeks ago at the game, and he actually gave them a standing ovation...twice. He's not a band guy, and has been disappointed by past halftime shows. He said this show, and their sound, is what he's been missing since the late 60s - early 70s Austin Crockett bands. They used to be large and very loud.

I wish I could find a video, but they're being strict about putting the show online until after the competition season. Anyway, I heard it on tv and it's not even close to what you experience in person.

How are y'all's bands doing so far?

I look forward to seeing Bowie at Super Regionals in a few weeks. They always have great shows and are one of my favorites. Congrats on your win in Arlington. We came in 3rd at the Conroe Regional--Marcus and Bell took 1 and 2. Not used to seeing Bell with such a 'tame' show. I'm sure they'll add the WOW factor before San Antonio.

Bell went to both regionals? Is that normal?

Not usually. But they are not going to Grand Nationals this year so they may be trying to tackle all state contests instead.

Flower Mound proud mom here. I enjoyed the Bowie and Bell shows at Arlington This is the first time FM has competed in BOA so it was exciting to get 4th place. It will be fun in San Antonio to see all the bands. UIL was yesterday and was the first time I saw Marcus's from the front. Cute show.

Not sure how Marcus did at UIL this past weekend, but they have swept all captions and won at both of their previous competitions...

The show is a very fun theme this year, and the music is just amazing!

Non-state year for Allen. Probably wouldn't matter as they will probably never make it anyhow. Too hard to insure all those kids are in step and the lines form perfectly to meet the judges approval. Did finish 7th at the Plano East Marching Festival and a 1 rating at the District competition.

If you are a fan of classic rock, you will love this year's show. And as always, you certainly can hear them. No theatre or artsy stuff with this group!

We love our band! :notworthy

Do military bands have a different judging criteria and different contests?
