How many people reading this thread get annoyed with the over usage of cell phones by people and then catch yourself being one of those that irritate you?

Using them while driving is dangerous in Houston. People chat on their phones and don't pay attention to how they are driving. It seems like when they are on the phone it's only them, their car and phone on the road and nobody else is out there on the road. <I answered my phone at a traffic light when the left turn green arrow turned off. After the oncoming traffic cleared I still had a green light but sat there talking on the phone. The guy behind me honked and I took off quite embarrassed.> GUILTY!!!

Phones in theatres. I think this was touched upon in a Firebird thread. I leave mine in the car.

Phones in the gym. This ought to be outlawed! I've seen people get to a workout station and sit there talking on the phone while people are waiting to work out there. This is especially annoying if you work out on your lunch break and have limited time to be there. I leave mine in the car.

How 'bout phones in a restaurant? I can't believe people talk on the phone when they are with some on else. I leave mine in the car.

I agree with the phones in a restaurant, because usually people have to talk louder than normal on them.

If you can't drive with a cell phone- I mean talking and driving- you have other issues! If you are enterring contact info or browsing the web on your PDA that is quite different!

What I can't stand are the little kids that have them. My 9 year old has a couple of 8 year old friends that have them. When they bring them to my house they just lay them anywhere and then forget where they put them. Then spend allot of time crying because their parents are going to "kill" them for losing the phones. Every time I have found the phones in the girls own stuff. Once in a shoe. Once in a backpack. I now have a no cell phone policy in my house for anyone under 13 years old. And if you have one, you check it at the door.

I am sorry. But I don't think it is my responsibility to keep up with someone eles' child's cell phone when I don't think they should have them in the first place.

I have one. It is in vibrate pretty much 24/7 because I can't stand it when other people's go off. I too hate it when little kids have phones. It is pointless and they aren't responsible enough, in my opinion.

At Katy's band concerts, an announcement is made to turn off cell phones and pagers because the music is being recorded. Not everyone listens.

When somebody is driving erratically, you don't know if they are chemically impaired or on a cell phone.

Well I take a different perspective on it. I didn't have to be kept track of. I was where I told my parents I would be and if for some reason that changed, I found a phone and called them and ask them if it was okay. I did this out of respect and out of FEAR. I managed to make it to adulthood without an electronic leash. If my parents went out, they left emergency numbers on the frige if the sitter needed them and guess what, I grew up just fine. I admit that cell phones have improved some things. But I think people have gone way over with them. A 9 year old does NOT need a cell phone. (my ex and I are having this "discussion" right now).

Alot of kids do that at my school. Heck I think everybody does it at their school and the teachers will take them up and not give them back until the end of the year and I know that if I get caught with my phone and I get it taken up I get in alot of trouble with my parents and I don't want that so I leave mine at home.

If you are a doctor on call, OK. If you are vital to national security, OK. If you have a close relative sick in the hospital, and need to be near the phone, OK. Other than that, turn the things off.

If I were a teacher, I would smash them with a hammer if they went off in class (and it would be my policy for cell phones if I were a principal). If I were a professor, I would fail every student who had their phone ring during class. I am really harsh about this.

And if you are too young to drive, you don't need a cell phone. I would probably buy one for my 16 yr. old daughter in case she had a roadside emergency.

That is good. I only ask because that is one reason I don't think younger kids need them. We couldn't reach a friend of Pup's parents yesterday, because she didn't know any numbers. They were all in her cell which was dead. So we were just S.O.L.

They aren't as vital for the youth. They help out, but I did without a cell phone until 1995 and got one then only because my supervisor wanted to be able to contact me. I agree there are phones available, but she's also going to want to fit in with other girls. I'm not a proponent of doing the same thing everybody else is doing, but I do believe that it's OK to do some things that the other kids are doing.

Well unless the other kids or their parents want to pay for the phone bills, she won't have one until I think it is appropriate or necessary. Honestly after seeing how her friends have acted when they were around her with the phones and when they freak out because they lose them has made her realize she does not want one right now. Regardless if she does or not, I am MOM and my word is law. :D

I know I am the meanest mom in the world.

I don't like the idea of kids coming over and talking to others on the phone.

In moderation, you're talking about $10 a month if she doesn't camp out on the phone.

Kids can be taught to not lose stuff. It's called not buying more stuff when they lose something.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of MOM.

in all honesty, i have to have my cell phone. it is turned on 24/7, but there is an actual need for that. at any moment, i could be driving anywhere between dallas and tyler to help out my parents, plus with them being gone as much as they are and my sister not being able to drive, i have to be on call w/ them to know if she needs something. however, i do have one of those plug in speaker phones in my truck so that makes it a little more safe to talk and drive.

I agree with you. If they are so vital, how the heck did the rest of us get along without them for so long???

I finally got one as a Christmas gift in 2004. It still scares the c**p out of me when it vibrates in my pocket. :D

I have often wondered how many people's jobs are SO important that they have to have the type of cell phones that are "permanently" attached to their ear. I very rarely take my cell phone inside a store, theater, etc. If someone needs me they can leave a message. I do always check my phone for missed calls when I get back to it.

I agree with some of the posts that people that talk on their cell phones while driving are becoming a huge problem. One of the biggest things I have noticed with that is that they don't pay attention when changing lanes and hardly ever use their turn signals while they are on the phone.

Sadly, our society is becoming too obssessed with being "in touch" at all times! :o

Before I had a cell phone, I would use them to make short calls when I was on a trip.

They aren't as vital for the youth. They help out, but I did without a cell phone until 1995 and got one then only because my supervisor wanted to be able to contact me. I didn't use it very much until I moved to Korea in 1997. I would use it a little when I was traveling. I never used a cell phone from 1997-2005 when I got this one to take over a contract for a girl I supervised.

oh i know...but with parents workng, kids needing to be in a million diffrent places at once...its easier for the parents to keep up...like, with my family..my dad works, and my mom takes us eveywhere, so when we need to be picked up or need something picked up or, mom needs us to do something or what not, its easier to do...now 12, might be a little young..but i was always golfing once or twice a week, at a local course, and it was our way to have a ride come get us

I forget about the old days sometimes. In my time, I said we were going outside to play and that meant I went a bunch of places. I knew what time to be back.
