View Full Version : Question about a formation

Offset I type formation but with the QB pistoled to right beside the FB like a zone read type look but with a RB behind the QB.
Seems to me that it would allow the QB to make a better read on options, open up the run game more with the blocking FB in place, and still give the QB more flexibility passing. To be more creative you could just switch up the RB/FB on plays to keep all of the offense the same but change the whole run game dynamic.
Offenses that still let you run a triple option, power run, and attack down field on any given play intrigue me.
Would that be a viable offensive formation or would it give the D too much time to read the plays development?

Nevada makes heavy use of that formation, and they'll often flip the fullback pre-snap to give themselves leverage over the defense. They'll run traditional I type plays out of that look (lead, counter, etc) in addition to the option stuff.

I'd really like to see more offensive creativity like that at the high school level instead of the vanilla pistol set most schools have. Shoot just flipping the runners positions totally changes the offensive dynamic.
The biggest trend in high caliber offenses is variety. Katy had a big playbook for for I-form, a little shotgun, and now a single wing type set. SLC had a monstrous playbook. Stephenville+Ennis supposedly had over 1000 play variables. ET has more motions/sweeps/crazy misdirection with that timewarp O than I've seen in a while at least with BC they did.
Im not seeing a lot happening lately and its driving me nuts :Censor:

My favorite set of Nevada's is when they bring a slot receiver into the look you talked about above.
They'll jet the slot man, and add a fourth backfield dimension. Oregon's the only other team I've seen with this dimension in their split backs gun look, usually with LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, in addition to a speedy slot receiver.
You can do some nasty, nasty stuff out of those sets.

During their bowl game I saw something like that I liked but it looked like a slot tight end instead of a WR. They began a motion that looked like it would be a jet sweep but it turned into a quick down field block that took out a safety while they ran a triple option. Once the DE bit on the FB fake run it was Kaepernick and the RB 1 on 1 with a very confused looking DB and no safety support.
Probably one of the more intricate running plays I've seen in a while and it had the defense reeling!
I'll be at the Nevada-Tech game this year. I cant wait to see Nevadas pistol vs Techs new pistoled air raid+run game.
