I say it has to be a matter of it all coming together at the right time! REL last year had 3 losses early compounded by several injuries but when they were all healthy were unstoppable! Staying healthy or great depth has to be key components of that kind of run!
all of the above AND an AWESOME DEFENSE!!!!
North Shore Mustang....what are the Mustangs looking like this year? Looks like they probably have one tough game on the schedule and could finish the season 10-0 again. They didn't run into a REAL test until Pearland last year in the playoffs...hopefully they will get one before that.

winning 5 playoff games in D1; winning 6 in D2 makes a State Champion.

-playing as a team, is what i think the main thing is, kind of like the Mircale on Ice, the team that played like a team, and the USA wanted it more as well
- heart
-will to win
-determination
-confidence
-coaching
-i think fan support helps as well
-disipline
-and being able to if you make a mistake forget about it and play on, which i guess is a trait of confidence

Great coaching, player talent, chemistry, preparation, developing a winning tradition from the ground up, community support, winning attitude, desire to be a champion and LOTS OF LUCK! All are ingredients needed for a State Champion and they are hard to find sometimes. There are good coaches all over the State, but the great coaches are evident by their record and how they develop teams and build programs. Their resume speaks for them.
John Outlaw, Mike Johnson, Todd Dodge, G.A. Moore and Art Briles are all examples of what great coaching does for a program.
Great coaching is the key to State Championships.

From experience, I'd say:
* Trust and accountability is the #1 component. Trusting in your peers to do their job, trusting the coaches to make the right choices, and being accountable for your own actions and holding teammates to theirs. That bond will make something special happen that can't be explained and everyone can have more fun. HEART is included in this.
* LEADERSHIP ..put this together with #1, and you got yourself the complete teamwork part down. Will also help in those grueling weeks of December when everyone is mentally and physically drained.
*Goals
*having atleast 1 playmaker can sometimes be the difference between state champ and 2nd place
*a little bit of blessing from above never hurt anyone
and yes, FBphenom had another wise input, CONFIDENCE. Don't get confused with cockiness, but CONFIDENCE can go A LONG way. Much support from the community and families help out a ton in this category.

My on-field experience is dated, but these concepts are not.
1. Team Chemistry. I don't care how much talent there is, if the kids are not together as a unit then no coach or no scheme or no superstar is going to get them through the Texas playoff gauntlet. It all starts with the kids caring for each other and having coaches that allow them to have fun.
2. Fundamentals. Before anything else, they have to block and tackle well.
3. Seniors. You need leadership from guys who have been there before and pull the team through any early season jitters.
4. One Great Player. At some point in the season, any team will need to look to that one player who can virtually will them to a victory.
5. Fearless Coaching. You have to risk losing in order to win.
6. Luck. Getting through 15 or 16 games without key injuries, and maybe having the ball bounce left instead of right at some critical time, or getting the right call from the officials.
I believe too much focus is being placed now on schemes. Sure, we all marvel at what Southlake Carroll can do with the football, but it still comes down to executing it. Blocking vs. escaping, tackling vs. strength and speed, throwing and catching versus pass rush and coverages. SLC won last year because of superb execution. Otherwise, no way would they have beaten Abilene, Lufkin or Smithson Valley.

What makes a State Champion?
Winning the last game of the year.
You can have heart, talent, coaching and everything else and finish 5-5, but if you win the last game of the season, I guarantee you'll be a state champion.

Not necessarily, what if you win the last game of the regular season and don't make the playoffs?

I disagree with the strong defense thing. SLC has a so-so defense when you are winning games 50-30 and scores like that. U have to be lights out on one side of the ball

That would not be the last game of the season. The last game of your season maybe, but the last game of the season is and always has been that big game in December. You win that game, and you're a state champion.

Have never had the privlidge of seeing the Dragons in person. However i really doubt it was their starting D that was giving up those points. Hopefully oen of the SLC members can correct me on this if I am wrong. Though I just have a real strong feeling these points were giving up well after the outcome of the game was in question.
As far as what I think it takes to make a State champion most has already been said here by others.

dada4w,
They are looking awesome!!! Of course last year's team was young and as strong as they could be taking after 03. Since that time they have grown and have gained much more experience. Aymond has great kids/athletes who have 110% heart into it. Should be a great season. They did run into a great test with Pearland and going into Westfield. With last years lesson learned through that experience, IT'LL BE ON!!!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!
