I'm going to go with they failed because New Orleans is that bad. You know they're dumb in that city because they choose to live in a sewer.

I hate Lousyanna for 2 reasons:

1. They have to be different in everything.
2. They think their state is great and it's horrible.

I dislike #2 a lot more than #1. For the record, I kinda like Oklahoma, and have mixed feelings (good and bad) about Arkansas and New Mexico.

No way. Even though I hate the place, I still go there to visit relatives. I do have some fun there and I want to go to the Plantations. I need to take you to New Orleans to see my old houses, like the one where my dad couldn't help me when a hot plate burned me because he had to keep the roaches off of the eggs. The other house is where I knocked that girl's teeth out and had a Mexican restaurant where I used to always go buy tacos. I had a lot of fun in that town even though I think it's a terrible place to live. I used to ride with my dad when he worked for Charles Chips. He'd have to make deliveries all over town, including Bourbon Street and New Orleans Naval Air Station. Schwegmann's may still be the largest grocery stores there are. I've always liked the Superdome and I love ben-yays (I think you spell it beneigts) in the French Quarter.

I moved to Lake Charles for work in July 2003. By July 2004 I was back in Texas!

Besides gaining an appreciation for crawfish and gumbo, but all red meat was suspect to which road the cook came to work on! all I got in this one year of my life is a culture shock I never expected!

Schools ARE that bad! My son was in 4th grade and tested for Gifted and talented( they actually made him retest to La Standards even though he was in the program in Tx before we left. What a laugher! The most challenging material was still curriculum from 3rd grade in Amarillo!

The roads make you seasick!

State income tax sucks!

State and local politicians were so inept and /or corrupt, they would make Dallas City Council blush with embarassment!

Drinking and driving... the convenience stores( mainly the Mom & Pops) had ready made margaritas and Crown &Coke Icees to go, if you wanted.
I work in the grocery industry and have never seen so many beer troughs in those convenience stores as I did in that area! The plants changed shifts at 3PM and by 4PM, I bet 1 out of 4 drivers had some alcohol in their system- maybe higher than 1 out of 4!

The so called football programs like Barbe, which has produced some good athletes, had a joke of a stadium. There are 3A schools in Texas with better facilities.

Racism was bad! Rebel flags all over. Little subtle hints, that the stores were mainly for whites. It was ludicrous!

I do regret ever putting my family in a place with such an overwhelming "LOSER" attitude. I will say, that after Rita hit, I went there to help our company's employees in Lake Charles, and they had a great attitude, but they are the ones who already had jobs and were already doing the right things for their families!
We have taken a hit in Texas for reaching out to these folks" in need" What some of them really need is a gentle push in the right direction to self sufficiency and independence, but out society is not real strong in the "tough Love" department.

just my $.02

Slorch, you're right on in your analysis. What I hate is that far East Texas is just like Lousyanna in many ways in the racism department and loser people. I won't lie about Katrina. When I heard it was going to hit Florida, I said I hope it takes out New Orleans.

Where else are they going to go?

Mississippi? Everybody knows Lousyanna is better.

Arkansas? Lousyanna looks down on them, too, but I like them more.

Texas? They try to act like they're better than Texas, but they know better. Hey, the free stuff is here.

i have to agree with you. every year my family and i go down to florida a couple of times a year. that means we have to pass through louisiana. now i know that the nicer areas are not going to be on an interstate, but louisiana is simply a craphole. there are much nicer areas in different states.

Actually we are in the third year of third grade TAKS reading and first year of fifth grade Math TAKS where you have to pass the test to move on to the next grade. In the first year of reading in Texas there were massive failures except in Waco because they implemented the current policy three years before. So it is logical that the LA students would be about three years behind the curve. The last surveys showed Texas ranked between 45-50, so Rattler we have nothing to be bragging about.

Here's the problem with the whole TAKS system. They came up with a test to show that we're teaching our kids, so we now teach them to pass the test instead of learn things.

You are right and no child left behind is straining states budgets because of unfunded mandates. Last session the state house passed a measure to include more testing but a few senators killed that measure. I hope next month they do not try to pass more unfunded mandates designed to take local control from school boards.

Texas scores 49th in the nation on verbal SAT scores, 46th on Math SAT scores. We are number 36 as far as high school graduation rate, and 33rd in terms of teacher salaries. Our public schools are nothing any Texan should ever brag about or feel superior about. We have pockets of excellent schools, and a vast hinterland of underperforming schools. Us making fun of Louisiana schools (even thoug I detest Louisiana) is a little like Laredo United South making fun of Houston Northbrook.

The only person who mentioned black people in this thread was me and those 2 topics consisted of racism against black people and how the races in Lousyanna don't talk to each other. All that was said was that kids did poorly on the test. White kids got displaced, too.

When we lived there, I would joke with our families back in Texas..."You know there's only one reason why La schools aren't the worst in the country? It's called MISSISSIPPI!

The other one is" At 12.5 cents an acre, I still think Jefferson got screwed by the French in the La Purchase!"

Working in a school that has evacuees still... and working with thier parents.... they all are extremely impressed with the facilities, and the education as compared to new orleans/ louisiana. Its been a good experience for most... and we have a few that are not going back because of the education factor here than there.. this is happening especially at the elementary level.... which they are low.. and will fail taks for now... but many can be caught up to grade level... and therefore many have chosen to stay because of the better quality of education here than in new orleans and vicinity...

Witness one of our problems--denial. Listen, coolestkid, I am about as true blue of a Texan Patriot as you will ever come in contact with. I am 7th generation, and I can go point to my ancestor's name on the monument to the defenders of the Alamo. I love this state and everything in it.

That is why the current state of affairs in our public school system embarrasses me, and why my votes will be given to whoever comes up with the best solution. The sort of patriotism that says "I refuse to recognize the fact that anything the state of Texas does might have a problem" is hurting the great state you proclaim to love so much.
