It's been learned that C Dan Koppen incurred a severe rotator cuff tear last season.
It was known he had separated his shoulder, but the new injury intensifies his situation. A source close to Koppen said the Pats' budding star would be ready for next season. Koppen himself didn't sound as certain: "My only expectation is that I will be 100 percent at some point." Mar. 26

Dexter Coakley - LB - Rams


LB Dexter Coakley is not a sure bet to start this year.
The smallish, speed 'backer was limited last season with ankle and leg injuries. He's said to be healthy now, but the Rams are set on the weak side with Pisa Tinoisamoa and in the middle now, with Will Witherspoon. Mar. 26

The Jets were awarded the only third-round compensatory draft pick by the NFL Monday.
New York now has the 97th overall pick and five picks on the first day of the Draft. Pittsburgh was the other big winner after being awarded two extra fourth-round picks. Baltimore and Denver were awarded the only other two fourth-round compensatory picks. A total of 32 picks were awarded to the league. Mar. 27

Eric Johnson - TE - 49ers


TE Eric Johnson says his plantar fascia has fully healed.
The foot injury caused him to miss all of 2005. Having Johnson, who led Niners' pass catchers the season previous with 82 receptions, back at full strength should benefit QB Alex Smith. San Francisco's tight ends made all of 17 catches last year. Mar. 27

Panthers


The Panthers have extended head coach John Fox's contract through 2010.
Fox's five-year deal is worth $25 million, making him one of the league's highest-paid coaches. His old contract had him at around $3 million-per year and was good through 2008. Since taking over a 1-15 Carolina club in 2002, Fox has led the Panthers to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship berths. Mar. 27

Patriots G Stephen Neal's contract is four four years and slightly more than $10 million, including a $3.2 million signing bonus.

The Ravens may wait until after the draft to add a veteran quarterback.
There has been a lot of speculation that Baltimore is hoping Steve McNair will get released and coach Brian Billick adds fuel to the fire, "In my opinion, the category of 'who is available' is not yet done," Billick said. Baltimore may miss out on Kerry Collins if they delay.

Sean Taylor - DB - Redskins


Sean Taylor reported to Washington's offseason workout program Monday.
His lawyer told the Washington Post Sunday that Taylor needed to stay in Miami to prep for his upcoming trial, but that proved to be untrue. Taylor will have to return to South Florida before his April 10th trial.

Derrick Dockery - G - Redskins


Redskins re-signed G Derrick Dockery to a one-year contract.
The restricted free agent's return ensures that the entire starting offensive line will return for the Redskins in 2006.

Eric Moulds - WR - Bills


NFL Network's Adam Shefter believes the Bills will be forced to release Eric Moulds.
Like the Terrell Owens situation with the Eagles, the Bills lost all their leverage when they made it clear Moulds was facing release. Buffalo is asking for a fourth-round pick, but Shefter reports no one will give it up. Houston and Philadelphia are reportedly the favorites to go after Moulds.

Quincy Morgan's contract is for one year and $580,000, including a $30,000 bonus.

Steelers CB Ricardo Colclough is likely to take over punt return duties for Pittsburgh next season.

It's not much of a need for Pittsburgh, but that hasn't stopped them from loading up before. "I feel good about the competition we have there," coach Bill Cowher said. "That will not hinder us; if we feel we can better our football team with another back, we will do so." Mar. 28

There's a good chance the talented receiver holds out well into offseason, as he's unhappy with his current contract. Walker informed ESPN earlier that he'd rather retire than return to Green Bay. The Bills and Texans are close to finalizing a trade, but it won't happen until Monday at the earliest.
The two sides have agreed on a four-year, $14 million contract, including a $5 million contract. The Texans are offering a fifth-round pick for Moulds, while the Bills want a fourth-rounder. Texans GM Charlie Casserly said a verbal agreement has been reached, however. It's a steal for Houston and fills a huge need. Moulds is expected to meet with Texans officials Monday to finish the deal. His agent is talking like it's already done. Mar. 30

Indications are the Titans are leaning towards drafting Vince Young.
Whether it's true or not, local and natioanal sources seem to agree on this. Many believe that GM Floyd Reese and owner Bud Adams want Young. Coach Jeff Fisher and coordinator Norm Chow may lean Matt Leinart, but their votes don't count as much.

Santanio Holmes will visit the Chiefs.

An MRI has revealed a torn hamstring for LenDale White.
On one hand, this validates White's lack of work the last two months including his Pro Day. On the other hand, White is hurt at the worst time possible. White has never run the forty in front of scouts. The moderate tear should heal by late May, but his murky draft status is less clear than ever.

UConn reserve power forward Ed Nelson will work out for NFL teams April 21st.
"He clearly has the talent to play basketball at the professional level, but if anyone can make the transition, it's him," UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun said. Calhoun fails to mention Nelson's pro hoops career would probably include following Khalid El-Amin to play in Ukraine.

The Browns are reportedly focusing on four players with their No. 12 pick, including DE/LB Kamerion Wimbley.
DT Haloti Ngata would make a lot of sense if he slipped that far. If not, Wimbley and N.C. State DE Manny Lawson both fit the DE/LB hybrid that 3-4 teams are looking for as an outside threat. The Browns are clearly looking defense. Apr. 14

Browns Director of Player Personnel Bill Rees compares the situation of Vince Young to that of 2005 No. 1 pick Alex Smith.
"Young is more of a spread-offense guy, where he takes a great majority of snaps in the shotgun," Rees said. "He is not dissimilar to a number of other quarterbacks who have had great success in that offense and didn't immediately make the transition to taking the snap and dropping back. You saw that last year with Smith. He ran a very similar style of offense. That's the transition...quarterbacks who play in that system have to make in the NFL." Apr. 15

Redskins signed Brandon Lloyd to a multi-year contract extension.
Terms were unavailable, but the Redskins now have their receiver corps set for a few years with Lloyd, Santana Moss, and Antwaan Randle El. It remains to be seen if Joe Gibbs can find enough production to keep all three receivers happy. We don't see how it's possible. Apr. 21

Claude Wroten - DL - Player


Profootballtalk.com reports LSU DT Claude Wroten and Missouri St. K Jon Scifres tested positive at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Wroten is one of the three most talented defensive tackles in this draft. Failing a test that is announced in advanced could send him spiraling out of the first day of the draft. Former Wisconin and current Raiders DT Anttaj Hawthorne experienced a drop to the sixth-round last year in a similar scenario. Scifres' was considered a top three kicker, but probably wasn't getting drafted anyway. Apr. 21

Steve Foley - LB - Chargers


Chargers LB Steve Foley was arrested Friday on suspicion of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and being drunk in public.
Foley reportedly fought with at least three officers after being pulled over. He's the second Chargers linebacker to be arrested for an altercation with the police in a week. Something tells us Donnie Edwards just came off the trade market. Apr. 21

Packers released CB Terrence Murphy.
Murphy injured his neck last season, revealing a spinal cord condition. He contends he's healthy enough to play, but the Packers' doctors disagree. He is now subject to waiver claims, but it appears his career could be over. Apr. 21

Torry Holt told new coach Scott Linehan that he didn't like how the team treated Isaac Bruce's release.
"To see that (release) was disappointing, and when I saw coach Linehan I said, 'That's how we're going to do it, huh, that's how you're going to start out?" Holt added that "you can tell" Linehan is a new coach by his interaction with the team at minicamp. Holt did add that he's "liking" his new coach, which must be a relief to Linehan. Apr. 21

The Texans have reportedly exchanged contract proposals with Reggie Bush and Mario Williams.

The thinking here is that Bunkley fits their aggressive cover two speed-based defense more than 350-pound Oregon DT Haloti Ngata. USC T Winston Justice and Texas safety Michael Huff would also seem fit needs. The Bills, of course, would listen to offers to trade down. Apr. 21

Williams may not get quite as many dollars as Bush, but since the draft picks are slotted financially it shouldn't make a huge difference. Apr. 22
