I found an older (2009), but informative and highly relevant write up on zone blocking from a Florida State blog with exerpts from NFL sources. The thread on smaller lines motivated this posting.

Great article. What type of blocking do you prefer - zone or man? The board seems to have followers of both schools of thought. I prefer zone because it is a smart application of force to maximize results and results in fewer screw ups.

A mix is ideal. For maximum flexibility, lines need to do both in today's game. Zone blocking is like Texas Hold Em. You can learn the concept in a day, but it takes a lifetime (or career in football terms) to master.

If you can get an O-Line to Zone block the conversion to man blocking is simple
