Jeff Fisher, the longest tenured coach in the league, may soon be parting way with the Tennessee Titans, SI.com reported Thursday afternoon.

It is not know if Fisher's departure will be called a firing, resignation or mutual parting of ways, SI.com said, according to a source in the NFL.

Fisher was 36 when he was promoted from Oilers defensive coordinator to interim head coach in November 1994. He was named the head coach in January 1995, and went 142-120 (.542) in his 16-plus regular seasons with the Oilers/Titans. Fisher is 5-6 in the playoffs, with one Super Bowl trip (1999), four division titles and six postseason bid.

I wish the Cowboys waited to name a HC until this was sorted out with Fisher.

I was wondering who would be the first person to say that.

I don't think he could coach for Jerry unfortunately, Jerry likes to make personnel decisions and he isn't very good at it. Fisher would be going into the same scenario he left in Tennessee.

Drafting VY started the downfall of Fisher. It would be nice to see him on the Boys sideline!

Yes, JJ biggest problem is himself. If he wasn't such a control freak he could hire ANY coach he wanted.

But it's his team.

5 winning seasons in 17 years.....

I'll take my chances with Garrett rather than having arguably the most overrated coach in the history of the NFL. I never understood the love affair for Jeff Fisher.

The writing was on the wall.........The Titans were not getting the desired results consistently with the time vested.

Kind of odd isn't it? I think the love affair was primarily the sympathy of Fisher putting up with Bud Adams all that time. :D

Well, he had 6 years with 10+ wins and 4 seasons at .500 so you're off just a pinch. Having said that I can totally understand your belief. The thing about numbers is they dont always tell the story. The man did endure under Bud Adams for 17 years, after all. He's also gotten netter results with less talent than many before him. Still, it was time for a change for all involved.

He was also near genius at identifying defensive no names and making them into very good players, particularly along the DL and in the secondary.

I see your point but id still rather have Garrett until proven otherwise. You gotta remember 2 years ago his team started out 0-6, then VY led them back to 8-8. And i realize he plays in Peyton Mannings division, but he hasnt for his entire tenure. How many division titles does he have? Playoff appearances? The guy will have a job in the snap of a finger but i still think he will go down as one of the most overrated coaches in the history of the NFL. No coach should be in the same place for that long, especially one that doesnt have the results on the field.

I'm far from a VY apologist. He's as culpable for his struggles as anyone. Having said that I have never understood Fisher's stance on him. I know he didn't want him drafted but get over it and find a away to win.

Manning's been there for a long, long time and the Oilers were on the decline when he got that job, not the fun team of the late 80's/early 90's.

Not enough, only 3 division titles in 17 years. For all of our struggles in Dallas, wade Phillips had near that many in 4 years.

I can't disagree with your sentiment but I do thing he's a quality head coach who would have flourished with a better organization. It's a little like the star player stuck on the average team. How would he do with better parts, take the next step or be just another guy?

I wouldn't have minded him in Dallas, provided he hired a better offensive staff than he has historically had. I'm hoping like crazy Garret ascends to the level all the insiders think he has it in him. He's left some seriously bad tastes in my mouth as a coordinator over the years, though, and had dull control over the offensive group that also started 1-7 this year. I think the 5-3 finish is deceiving, too, as those games were very close and extremely high scoring. Having said that I give him huge credit for getting the players motivated and keeping them focused during a lost season. With that group that means alot.
