View Full Version : Big Day for VY
KT2000

Today, pro day will be conducted at the UT indoor practice facility.
The Saints' signing of Drew Brees has thrown a bit of a curve ball into the draft. It was widely thought the Saints would use their draft pick on Matt Leinart.
So, that move by the Saints effectively knocks the value of the QBs in the draft. I'm shocked by the move really. I'd rather take a shot with Leinart than put a franchise tag on a guy like Brees.
It's tough to see Leinart slipping by the Titans and a chance to reunite with Norm Chow. Personally, I think Vince will end up with the Raiders at #7. Cutler's stock took a hit at the combine after orginally rising with the Wonderlic test. It seems like most are in agreement with Leinart-Vince as the top two QBs available.
If Vince doesn't go by #7, it's thought he could fall to the Lions at #9 or the Ravens at #13.
Today's a big day for Vince. It will be interesting to hear what the reports are from this pro day, and following individual team workouts.

Hey Kt,
Vince will go the the Jets depending on his Combine.
1. TEXANS - Bush (maybe Ferguson)
2. SAINTS - Mario Williams
3. TITANS - Leinart
4. JETS - YOUNG
5. PACKERS - Hawk
6. 49ers - Ferguson
7. RAIDERS - Cutler

I heard that Chad Pennington is still in NY. He just restructured his contract. I hope that VY goes to the Jets because they really need a QB.

Well I don't think its going to happen after the Texans gave Carr a 3 year extension on his contract. It looks like they are going with Bush but i could be wrong as they may trade down and god i hope they don't trade down because i am a big Reggie Bush fan.

Vince won't fall past Oakland. Al Davis is too enamored with him.

Yeah I have heard rumors that if VY falls to Oakland at the 7th pick the Raiders will take him.

Ed Werder reported Vince ran a 4.5 or so in his 40's. Is throwing in the bubble this afternoon - about 100 coaches present.

Vince was 55 of 57 passing in their drills with 3 step, 5 step, 7 step drops in addition to rolls and half rolls. Threw with very good accuracy and velocity.
A very good workout by all accounts. He was timed in the 40 from 4.48 to 4.57 depending on which stopwatch you were looking at. Of course, for a full account of his running ability just pop in any game he's ever played.

From all accounts I looked at. VY had a really solid Pro Day with the throwing test. I think he impressed many people and converted over a few people the way it sounds.
Second... just like every year. To many people put way to much stock in 40 times. It's probably the most "over-rated" football stat out there. However, a 4.5 is flying by all accounts.
Vince Young has "Football speed" more than anything. He is "FAST" on a football field with pads & a helmet on his body. He also has very "athletic" with makes him better. It's not all about his 40 time but how he moves on the football field.
Vince Young will have he's NFL growing pains. I dont think there is any doubt about it. Just like 95% of all the other NFL new QB's over the years. I do think that after a couple of growing years and NFL experience. He'll turn out to be a "VERY SOLID" NFL Qb that will probably have a few "ALL-PRO" caliber years.

You should know this more than anyone, but the private workouts he does for teams will be a better indicator of his passing skills, where not all the throws are scripted and ran by his personal advisor, FWIW.

Everybody knew about Vince's mobility. What he needed to show was his arm and he sure did that. Scouts at the pro day raved about how well he works under center and how strong his arm is. Vince was throwing 50-60 yard bombs with pinpoint accuracy. The Titans are bring their own receivers to Austin tomorrow to work with Vince more. The Texans and Titans are doing the same thing. Texans coach Gary Kubiak had this to say about Vince...
"Very impressed," said new Texans coach Gary Kubiak, whose team owns the No. 1 pick. "The kid put on a show."
The interesting thing about Vince's 40 time is that he wasn't even supposed to run today. He was scheduled to do the throwing drills and measurments and then go through the interviews without running, but after watching his teammates run, he decided to give it a shot and was still able to run in the 4.4-4.5 range. Scares me to think what he would do if he prepared for it.
The guy that really dropped some jaws was the former Marine, FB Ahmard Hall who showed up 5'11 232 and ran as fast as a 4.49 40... as a FB! He also had a 35 inch vertical jump and lifted 24 times. Dude is just a freak.
Scouts always say that Texas' pro day is the biggest and the best. The facilities rival even the best of the NFL and the Texas coaches put together one helluva show. This video gives you and idea as to what it's like...

It's from the Austin-American Statesman and is free. You may have to register, but again, it's free and well worth it if you ever wanted to know what a pro day was like.

Some more great quotes. This time from Sean "I'm a USC homer" Salisbury on ESPN...
-You would have thought it was Rose Bowl media day with all of the media present. I've never seen that many people at a workout. Huff was there of course, but most everyone was there to see Young.
-I've never seen a college football QB throw with that kind of zip. It was bordering on unbelieveable. He threw everything and had great touch.
-The ball hit the ground 5 times out of 54 passes. Two overthrows and three drops.
-I gave him an A- just because I would like to see him run a bit faster.
-You will have scouts down his mechanics tomorrow. Don't change him. He is a playmaker.
-When his arm comes to maturity, it will be unbelievable.
-His footwork was really good, but then again there was no pass rush.
-He will likely go in the top 5.
-When he scrambles to his left, he forces his body into the correct throwing position.
-Watching him his incompletions will be over-thrown.
-I'm not trying to make to big a deal out of it, but you have to call what is impressive, impressive.
-The ball just jumps off of his hand. I didn't expect him to be that accurate. He really impressed me.
-Texans Coach Gary Kubiak had one word after the workout "Excellent". He said to me "I wish we could have played with that kind of ability"
-Saban, McCarthy ad Kubiak were there. There were some Cowboy scouts there.
-If he doesn't get picked in the top 5, some teams are stupid. If you saw this workout today, and you like Leinart more, you better wait to see Leinart again on his pro day.
It would appear that Vince really blew some people away.

Oakland signed Aaron Brooks. I wonder what implications this might have for Vince as a Raider.
I don't think the Oakland front office is projecting Brooks as a long term starting qb. Could they be making a move to secure a veteran for VY to tutor under, and later to serve as a backup??

That would be my guess. Raiders need a QB in a bad way and Brooks is a decent QB. If Vince does fall to the Raiders, Brooks will be a decent QB for Vince to learn under. In terms of size and skill, Brooks probably compares more favorably to Vince than any other QB in the league. If Vince goes before Oakland can get him, then the Raiders still have a decent QB that can lead them for several years.

Just a thought, but why aren't the Packers contemplating taking VY or one of the other highly rated qb's in this draft. I know that they took Aaron Rodgers last year, but surely they have to be having second thoughts about trusting their franchise's future to yet ANOTHER Tedford qb.
Why not pull a San Diego, and let two young guys challenge each other, then pick the one you like best?

I don't think the Texans will take Reggie. Think of the last time Gary Kubiak worked with a 1st round running back? I don't think he ever has. He and Shanahan always found the gems in the 5th or 6th round. I think they'll trade down, and I think VY will go to the Jets.

I decided to record the bit on Sportscenter. I thought it was mostly very good. A lot of fair and glowing praise for Vince from NFL coaches, GMs and owners as well as very positive and fair analysis from a former NFL QB for a few minutes. All followed by 30 seconds of a goof in a suit quoting a goof reporter who quoted "unnamed sources" who weren't so impressed with Vince... typical ESPN. I know who I believe.

I believe what I see with my own eyes. I didn't care what Vince ran his 40 in unless it was below a 4.7 or something.
I've never seen him caught once he hits the open field because for every one stride he takes, most people chasing him need two strides to cover the same ground.
Mortensen has been con-Vince from day one. Typical draft stuff. Scouts/agents feeding bad information, spreading rumors to devalue players ranked higher than ones they like or represent.

Salisbery said (he was there) his workout was "very good". Great arm strength, great speed, good accuracy and below average mechanics. He said VY's arm strength is better than Leinart.

He has some speed but I think that the coaches will work with him more on the passing and then improve his speed.
