You down in Alpine checking out Sul Ross? Cool looking college built up on that hill. Seems like a nice little town.

I like Alpine, but they sure put a premium on houses. Houses and land costs a lot more there than Marathon, Dryden, and a bunch of other places.

Well, we went camping in Big Bend, and we stayed at the Ramada in Alipine the last night. We drove by Sul a couple of times. THE buildings look very nice and new and they are building something new on the hill too...I thought it was dorms but it may have been more classrooms. We went and saw the Marfa lights and did all teh other touristey crap. I won't start seriously checking out colleges until next year.

That reminds me of a story. For most of teh time we were out htere, we stayed in the town of Terlingua...you know, right in teh mountainous desert. So, the land is pretty cheap, and not appreciating that much. We went with a guy name Bill Holmes (GHS class of 1949, he was valedictorian, in fact). Mr. Holmes owns a 40 acre plot out there that he bought for 40 dollars/acre 30 years ago. Today, land sells for about 125 an acre...talk about long term investments...

$125 an acre is still a darn good price for land.
So one time I was driving across that part of the great state, and I stopped to fill up my truck at a rickety, independet gas station. An old man, about 70 was minding the store, and a kid about 10 or 11 years old (I assume his grandson) was helping him out. When I paid for my gas he pointed to a tiny little thunder cloud WAYYYY off in the distance and said:
"Looks like it might rain"
"Guess it might", I responded.
"I would sure like to see some rain", he said, then continued"
"Not so much for me, as for the boy over there", and he went on "You know, I've seen rain."
Just a little humor for you West Texans :p

I love the Big Bend area. Did you happen to go down to that little town where you can park and go across the Rio Grande on a little boat paddled by a Mexican guy, go across the border and eat in the little adobe hut Mexican town there? I had heard that they closed that down after 9-11, but didn't know if it had been opened up again. It sure was a cool thing to do.

The border crossing in the Big Bend park at Boquillas canyon is indeed closed, I was out there in August. The Park Service frowns on people even buying the souveniers sold by the Mexicans across the river.

There was no legal place to cross the river anymore, but at Santa Elena Canyon and the Hot Spring, you could pretty much walk/swim to the other side. There was a guy living across the river at the Hot Springs.

we drive EVERYWHERE, my parents just love to look at scenery..
so we left Southlake at about 930ish on friday morning..drove to Tucson, AZ, and stayed at El Conquistador Hilton..then drove to Phoneix and stayed at a Harrahs (no gambling in texas), then we drove to Rancho Mirage, California(right next to Palm Springs), and stayed at Mission Hills Westin..oh man was it awesome there!! tons of 18,19,20 year old babes by the pool, oh man it was heaven! i also saw a Bentley Dealership there, Bentley's were all over the place, as were a TON of high value cars..we then began our journey home on thursday. stopped at another Harrahs in Laughlin, Nevada..then stayed at a "something in spanish i dont understand" Marriott, in Alberquere, New Mexico..the cool thing about this place was, the Harlem Globetrotters were there as were New Mexico Senators..there was seceret service(or something like that) all over the place..we arrived in southlake, texas earlier this evening
