Kitna, Cowboys look deep to beat Giants (http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/12128/kitna-cowboys-look-deep-to-beat-giants)
The Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys) beat the New York Giants (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants) 33-20 Sunday night, avenging a 41-35 loss to the Giants in Week 7. Jason Garrett (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=509) wins his first game as head coach, the biggest road win ever posted by an NFL head coach immediately after a midseason coaching change, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Coincidentally, Garrett matched the largest margin of victory immediately following a mid-season change since
Wade Phillips. The former Cowboys head coach made his NFL head-coaching debut by leading the Saints to a 293 win over the Rams 25 years ago after replacing his dad, Bum Phillips.
Here are a few things that made a difference in the game:
The Cowboys took more shots down the field, throwing more than 20 yards downfield on 22.7 percent of their pass attempts. Prior to Sunday, the Cowboys had only thrown more than 20 yards downfield on 8.5 percent of pass attempts.
The Cowboys ran three screen plays Sunday against the Giants, racking up 117 yards and a Felix Jones (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11256) touchdown. In their first eight games, the Cowboys picked up 138 yards on 23 screen attempts and no touchdowns.
In the teams first meeting of the season in Week 7, Dallas also ran three screen plays, but netted just seven yards.
Eli Manning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5526) was 4-for-4 with 3 touchdowns in the red zone against the Cowboys in Week 7, but on Sunday he struggled. Manning threw two interceptions in the red zone in Week 10 after throwing just one pick in his previous eight games.

Isn't just amazing, how other things open up (screens, passes downfield, etc), when the running game has ANY sort of success? The defense also, wasn't half bad, with SOME semblance of Offense to help take SOME pressure off.

I dont disagree but let's be honest here. The difference is the offense making some plays and the defense creating some turnovers. Dallas still gave up 500 yards of offense but they made a play when they needed to. That hasn't been the case for 6 weeks or so. They created turnovers yesterday and that hasn't been the case all season.
We were also lucky to catch a team that is as beat up on the oline as were are on the dline, imo. Not sure this same performance will win us many more games outside of Detroit and Arizona.

Did not see this win coming. I expect the Cowboys to play harder and with more focus under Garret, but pulling out a win out in the Giants new house was a nice surprise

The defense gave up a lot between the 20's, but their Red-Zone D was very good.
You may be right about the G-Men injuries on their lines, but you could tell a big difference in the Cowboys effort yesterday.
Also the Cowboys Offensive line played great for the most part. How many penalties did the offensive line have yesterday?

Text I sent my friend during the game:
In regards to the fumble Kitna had on the goal-line that he recovered
"McGee would have rolled into the endzone for a touchdown"
In regards to the pick that Eli threw for a pick 6
"McGee would have thrown the ball through the defender's body into his receivers hands"
In regards to the lights going out and turning back on
"McGee got tired of this **** and went and fixed the lights"
McGee is turning into Chuck Norris.

They WERE lucky to catch the Giants, without Cowboy killer Smith. That was big. The Offensive line for the G-men was down as well. But, on the other side of that, Dallas had one of their D-lineman out, and both CBs were nicked up. This, at the half way mark of the season.
But, the Dallas Offense did more than they have in the last few weeks, to help the Dallas D. The O-line play, while not spectacular, was better by far, than it has been since early in the season. There is no denying that the Dallas defense gave up lots of yards. But, again, isn't it amazing how the defense can get better, just by the Dallas offense hangin on to the ball for a change??
On the other side of this argument, when is the last time, you saw this many dropped passes? While I am referencing the Giants in specific, there were a lot of dropped balls, throughout the league.
Surprisingly, Dallas receivers were catching everything thrown their way.
I was on the bandwagon to get Phillips outta there (as soon as Romo went down). I would have NEVER thought that Garrett was the guy to take the reins. Not gonna anoint him just yet, but man, did Dallas look like a different team yesterday. I thought that was the best they have looked all season, and that includes when Romo was there.

- more than anything the turnovers are what saved them. 500 yards is 500 yards and surrendering that kind of yardage gets you beat more times than not. Having said that I think the defense will be better with Coach Pasqualoni calling the plays. His concepts don't put nearly as much pressure on the secondary and he's more apt to get creative with zone coverages. That will help alot.
You may be right about the G-Men injuries on their lines, but you could tell a big difference in the Cowboys effort yesterday.
Wouldn't argue that point at all. I'm just being honest. We were seriously depleted on the Dline. Two guys we signed on Wednesday played alot of snaps. It helped that the Giants were down 2 starters on their line.

I think Dallas only had 4-5. They played a fairly clean game.

Injuries are part of the game. Teams are lucky two years ago when Brady went down.
Shouldn't the Giants be lucky that they're lining up against John f'n Kitna and not Tony Romo?

- Smith being out was critical. With as shallow as this team is at cb I'm not sure we could have overcome NY having their full, 3 receiver set. As for the line, my point was with our injuries there it was nice to play a team with the same issue. That helped to offset any advantage NY may have had.

- That Dallas was making plays was a God send for the defense. As poor as they have played the lack of TOP from the offense was the nail in their coffin. You can't leave a defense on the field for 35 miuntes a game. The 85 Bears would have struggles with that.

- Wade had to go. I was there, too. Garrett was the onyl logical choice as interim. Perhaps he'll prove me wrong but I see him as part of the problem, not the solution. They looked good, all things considered, and that is a positive for him. We'll see where it goes from here.

When Stephen McGee was a teenager, he once impregnated every nun in a convent tucked away in the Himalaya mountains. 9 months later, the nuns all gave birth to the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated and untied team in NFL history

Dude, you need to learn to use the quote function. I didn't say all that.
The best thing about Sunday, was the Cowboys effort. 500 yards is 500 yards. Bottom line though, if the Cowboys hard played with that kind of heart all season, they would not have gone into this game 1-7. Let's just enjoy this and not nit-pick. We can nit-pick next week, when they barely beat an awful Lions team.

Dude, I know how to use the quote function. It's easier to counterpoint or respond to lengthy posts that way.:)
I'm not nit picking them. They effort was much better. They did what they did without 3 of their defensive lineman and with Newman and Jenkins on the bench for extended periods. That's impressive. If they can keep forcing turnovers the yards will very rarely matter. That's always been the rub with this group, though. For all the talent and production they can't force turnovers to save their lives. Pasqualoni will do so nice things with this group, imo.
Except for the fact that Stafford is out, Detroit has alot going for it. They have been in every gamethey've played, most of them being decided in the final minutes or overtime. Schwartz has really got them pointed in the right direction. Suh is not human.

Coaching for Wade Phillips, not exactly awe inspiring...
fire crotch got them motivated and pretty much told them to man up... with the talent the Cowboys have, they could end up at 8-8 and 7-9.

Completely agree! I bet the Cowboys end with 2-3 more wins than the Texans do this year!
