View Full Version : SLC-Smithson Valley...One of the best games ever?

Last season's 5A state title game between SLC and Smithson Valley turned out to be a lot better than most expected. In fact you might say it was an "instant classic". Where does it rank in the history of state title games. It certainly makes my top 5 in terms of competitiveness and drama. Duncanville's win over Converse Judson was awfully good. If you didn't see this game the 1st time or would just like to see it again here is a link to see a recap.

Let's talk about where it ranks all time. Personally I think their road to the finals was probably the toughest I've ever seen. Abilene, Lufkin and Smithson Valley could have all just as easily been state champs - making SLC's title run all the more remarkable!

I did not see the game but looking at the stats it appears SLC played a sloppy game with the turnovers. Plus SLC racked up almost 500 yards of total offense. SV had less than 100.

The only thing that seemed close was the score (and the highlights) , but that appeared to be an aberration.

You really need to watch the game. And I dont know where you get your stats... As for the turnovers, those were forced, not given.

I saw the game SVchamp. I think the point is SV played pretty much a PERFECT GAME and SLC made a few mistakes in the game that they usually dont make ( it happens)..

Not taking anything away from SV. They played one heck of a game (almost perfect) and made it a last second thriller.

That game is a classic. I live in Miami Florida and guess what was on tv here about one month ago..? you guessed it 2004 SLC vs SV. :)

I'm always impressed when I see SV play. Very well coached and alot of great coachable kids that go all out 100%. SV should be in the hunt again this season and make a strong run deep into the playoffs.

I think a better "instant classic" was AHS vs. SLC in the Regional Semifinals. THAT was a last second thriller.

I saw that game also on DVD.. It was a classic also. Heck, you could put:

2004 SLC vs AHS
2004 SLC vs Lufkin
2004 SLC vs SV

all on that classic list. They were all 4th qt thrillers.

Yea the Lufkin-SLC game this year was a great one. But the SLC-SV game was won by a field goal which shows you it was pretty dang close. As far as playoff games this season I loved watching the Plano West-Denton Ryan game. 2 great teams in that one.

You can buy them from the SLC booster club. I've bought the last 2 SLC-Lufkin games from them. I think they're $10 apiece.

It was a good game but maybe not one of the top 5. I'm extremely biased but I believe the 2003 Katy vs SLC State game was better. The margin of victory was only one point (16-15) and the game wasn't over until the last play of the game which was a 1st down conversion by Katy on a 4th down 3yrds to go. Plus holding SLC's offense to only 15 points was an accomplishment. That game might have been SLC's lowest point output of the season.

Oh ya.. that was also a Great Game.. Katy turned it on. I was impressed with the play of Katy's Lb- Paul Thornton (DUKE) in that game. He was all over the place and made that huge block on the punt. Great game.

could you copy and paste the part that showed 500/less than 100 total yards? That is not what SV has in their books....

A lot of that game you saw was edited for time. However both SV and SLC turned the ball over. It was not one sided. If SV would have had a perfect game they would have won it. Oh well, they will be back next year, I just hope SLC will too. The coaching in that game began to get weird toward the end. SV just needed to run out some clock, but tossed 3 deep balls in a row going for the win. I agree with the calls, but that was not "perfect" in that situation either. They could have drove down the field, ran out the clock, and scored to win the game.

Na.. I saw the game when it was "Live on tv" unedited. I get FoxsportSW here in Miami so I can keep up with events back home. I just remember SLC turning the ball over early in the game near their own 20 yard-line which I think SV scored a td on. Plus, QB-Chase Daniel fumbled the ball deep inside SV red-zone when it appeared that they were going to score. I remember that being two key turnovers that SV capitalized on.

No game is "perfect" but from what I remember. SV played an almost flawless game and SLC made some key errors that they dont usually make. But... that's FOOTBALL.

The question I have is this.... Is SV going to be able to replace that QB ? He was a solid athlete that had the old-school mentallity on the football field. He might be the hardest player to replace for SV when its all said and done.

the truth is,no-one around here truely knows how good brian hill will b.everyone has doubts in there minds, not as to how the team will b,but how the qb will be.his performance in the junior varsity games last year was amazing at times, and at other times out right bad..if u ask me,everyone will know wat kind of season he is going to have by the 3rd or fourth game....but even if he is off a lil bit,our revievers can make up the slack.

As for the game, it was still edited, several plays were missing, As for the QB, yea Coach Hill's son is taking the spot. He played in about every game during the playoffs as a soph. OH YEA, SV also turned the ball over some..

This didn't "paste" very well. This from the SLC web site, but I beleive it, in turn, is from the Dallas Morning News article.

I guess the stats are wrong on for total passing yards because it shows 15 on top then it shows that Bailey passed for 156.

Actually, you can get any Carroll game on VHS or DVD as far back as 1987. The Athletic Booster Club sells them. Some of the more recent ones are available at the Dragon's Den inside REB Photo, located on Carroll Avenue in the Southlake Town Square.

As for the best games ever, I would have to go with '01 SV vs. Denton Ryan. SV lost in overtime of that heartbreaker 42-35. Personally, I would've chosen Cody Beyer to be the QB, but we're probably still in good hands with Brian.

I know some of it is wrong, but that one dude said that SV had less than 100 total yards and SLC had over 500. I knew that was not correct. As for David, he had more than 1 carry and 3 yards. Cause they gave him the ball for an entire series, with a blown out knee. I remember that because I knew he was going to get at least one carry because he was a senior, but I could not figure out why he stayed in. I know he got the ball 3 times, and I know on one of his carries he got 8-10 yards on a run.

I have a friend who has a kid who played on the Jv and he said, like mentioned before, Bryan Hill was awesome at times, but never out right bad. He had his games where he lit it up and others where he got the job done. He did not have the athletes to surround him like he will on the varsity. I imagine with the dad as the ol coach he will know the offense better then anyone and probably lead the team well. But who knows only time will tell but I think the kids going to do fine.

Yea, he did get it, he was in for 6 plays, and got it 4 times. About a 8 yard run on one, a 1 yard run on the other, and about 3-4 on the other two. Blocked for 2 play action plays. That was all he was in for, and then he knee began hurting when a DL rolled on his leg.

As for 4A, I agree with you 100% Great game, best I have ever seen. As for Cody, he is going to A&M to play WR. He has to stay at that position, too good to not play there. I think Hill will do fine, Smoked teams from FR year on, hope he can do the same now. Even got some playing time on V last year as a Soph. Didnt do bad considering the 2nd team OL, WR, and RB's were in. Going to be interesting to see.
