I start his thread knowing it could go the wrong way if we cannot discuss this topic responsibly, so keep it cool, OK!
I did watch the show the other night, and I was amazed at how differently Bruno and the Black guy perceived everything.
I am a hiring manager and take a ton of pride in hiring "the best person for the job" There are pockets of East Texas that aren't too keen on my black salesman coming in their stores. It has been a huge challenge to meet the needs of my employees, my company, and my customers, when all of the different perceptions of " the best person for the job" exist. I look at experience in our industry, written test scores, interview, and any clues I can get about the job applicant's work ethic, definition of success, and long term goals. My company would like for me to hire mostly minorities. My customers would like to see white guys coming into their stores. I want to have career oriented people who want to grow the business, with our customers winning at the same time, and building financial strength for their families at the same time. It is easier said than done, with all of the different perceptions and expectations out there.
I have blacks, hispanics, women, and women that are lesbian, as well as "just plain ole white guys" working for me. It is extremely insulting how my company sometimes looks at white males, it is very much like we are the battle droids in the Star Wars films. Cheap, plentiful, and despensible with the same mindset, even though we have been "trained" as managers, to believe that everybody is diverse, or, that they bring something different to the table. It is such a double standard.
These misperceptions are the reason I mark "other" when I do any legal document, loan application, job info, ect that asks my ethnicity. I really have an issue with them asking this question at all, and I feel they should just know that I am American-Period! no comas, no hyphens, nothing but what I truly am. Never been to Europe, never been to Africa, never been to Mexico. I am American and that is all that should matter. The gross discrimination will never cease until people take on this attitude and stop differentiating themselves from other groups.
There are many other factors that perpetuate the discrimination in our country such as the state of dependency some are in, or the insulated lives some people lead that buffer their contact with other races. Affirmative action is just as wrong as the racism it claims to rectify, IMO. As long as people keep wanting to be treated differently, they will be, on both sides of the coin.
If people would focus on working, supporting their families, and growing as individuals in their faith, where would all of these issues go? You know the answer, we'd be too proud to hate, to confident to doubt ourselves, and too independent to expect a handout. I know it's idealistic, but people need to focus on the real reason we're here, and stop all of the BS. If you're busy growing yourself and taking care of your responsibilities, the rest will come.
And for those of you who think ole Whitey's holding you down, or the Gov owes you something, or that all of the minorities have the advantage, I would suggest you take charge of your life and make it happen!

Slorch, you're right on in your analysis. Let me add that many people play the race card for political or monetary gain. This country was founded upon the belief that the government had limited powers and more power was left to the states, the cities, and the people. Over time, but especially since Lincoln, the federal government has taken over more and more of our lives. We now have a major political party that plays the whole race hating, handout giving card in every election to keep votes and it never helps the populace they claim to help. The other party never says anything because they want some of those votes, too. We have a whole slew of activists that would be out of a big money source if everybody started getting along. Don't think for a minute that their main goal is your well being. I know they like to help, but the main gig is to create anger towards other races and keep the money coming in.
I know a lot of this stuff is just ignorance. People don't hang out with the other races and the old stereotypes never get busted. That's a shame because those of us who work with all races can appreciate each other. I had a black roommate the first 2 nights in New Jersey and we had a great time and he came back and told me in the camp a few days later that he found out he was going to get promoted. I had a good time with a black guy I met at DFW that is just coming back from Iraq and was flying to Wichita Falls on my flight. That is normal everyday life for me. As a supervisor, I have to take care and be responsible for people of all races, along with make contacts with all races. There is no room for prejudice in a situation like that. We had a cookout at the end of our exercise in New Jersey on Thursday and I wanted to buy the food for the 3 people that worked for me, but I also paid for 2 of their friends who were in line with us. The 5 people broke down as 2 black guys, 2 black girls, and 1 white girl. Imagine what it would've been like if I said I was going to pay for just the white girl? There was still some prejudice in the military 15 years ago, but I think most of it is gone now.
I'm against the Affirmative Action stuff, too. At the end of the day, most people are going to hire who they want to hire and that typically goes along race lines, anyway. It's not fair to keep a qualified person out of a job to make the numbers work. I can see where there once might've been a place for this, just like stuff from the New Deal, but I think we've outgrown the need for Affirmative Action.
Yeah, there are pockets of East Texas I don't like either. I consider a lot of East Texas as West Louisiana and an embarrassment to our state. I get mad driving through some of these towns just because they look like Louisiana.
The answer to all our problems is for the people to unite. We can solve our own race problems, along with all the other problems if we work together. The people who tell you they're going to solve the problems are lying because they want to make money off of it. That's the first question anybody should ever ask when somebody says something. Ask yourself if there is some benefit to the speaker for you to believe them. If you think the speaker benefits by you listening to them, then there's a good chance they're lying. Don't get me wrong because some people really care. I'm just saying that you'll hear more truth on message boards than you hear in the media because we don't make money off of what we say.

ask which party the majority of Hispanic or black minorities generally vote for, AND WHY. I suppose you would already know this answer.

Ask which party does race baiting like Willie Horton or I lost my job to a minority before an election and Why. I suppose you would already know this answer. Both parties do it.

Slorch, I believe in the best person for the job and when hiring I follow that philosophy. If you call out affirmative action you have to call out the good ole boy system which is why affirmative action exists on some levels. Affirmative action does not exist in Texas Schools, but “Legacy does” at some schools which is the upper class white person’s version of Affirmative action. As one can tell by reading some of the topics on this board we have a long way to go.

I think the Black guy on the show is so excited that he thinks Bruno is going to automatically starting seeing/feeling things.

if you work for a company like mine which was honored as "top 5 company to work for minorities," you don't need either party to tell you what to vote for.
If you have a political party promising handouts, either way( corporate vs individual welfare), it is wrong.
My thread is much more about individual responsibility, than the corruption of our political system.

in today's competitive world, if you're stuck in the "good ole boy" system, you're cutting your own talent pool short. You will lose in the long run.
No matter who you are in America today, you can go do something with your life, if you're willing to get after it. If you got a felony, not my problem. If you deserted the military, once again, not my problem. We all have choices to make, and everybody has challenges.
I have more self respect than to say someone was holding me back. How could I look at my kids and tell them I gave up because someone didn't like me.
If you knew me, you'd know where I am coming from. I grew up in gov housing. My dad left when I was 9. I am not perfect, my wife and I had a kid 6 months after we were married. I never waited for thte Gov to help me find my way. I get so passionate about people waiting for others to change for them. Go out and take what's yours- I mean this in the most positive, legal way!

Yes, I believe individual responsibility regardless of the individual, but our society is in an excuse mode. It is okay for me but not for you which is a load of crap and we wonder where our kids pick up that mode of thinking.
