View Full Version : Does Rick Cantu have a heart?

Here's part of what Rick Cantu's soulless recap of the Hutto vs Connally game misses:
He mentions Hutto's 312 yds passing (and 2 ints by the way) but fails to talk about Connally defense stuffing the Hutto run game, holding them to a total of 84 yards, or 2.47 yds per carry.
He rightly touted Defee (his sister works for the paper so I guess it would be awkward not to) but didn't tie up the story of the Connally running game: 251 total yards for 7.6 yds per carry as compared to Hutto's 2.47 ypc.
Connally clearly had the more balanced attack. I guess its hard to go there for RC since on the pre-game video he gave the edge to Hutto because they just had too many offensive weapons.
Weapon #21 was a non-factor in the game. That was a big part of the story last night. No hint of that in the game coverage. 50 yds on 18 carries for an average of 2.8 yds per carry. What was he averaging prior to this game?
Hutto's passing yards per attempt: 8
Connally's passing yards per attempt 11.9
Hutto's yards per catch: 14.8
Connally's yards per catch: 25.3
How one can watch a game like that and not communicate at least some of the passion is a remarkable feat.
On his on camera standup following the game he actually spun the Hutto loss as basically meaningless...except for school pride. Yeah, I'm sure that would've been the take if Hutto had won as expected. No big deal. Hutto's still going to the playoffs. So they lost to Connally. Yawn.
Someday maybe he'll write an article about Connally that has some of the heart and passion he puts into pieces about Lake Travis or Westlake but he just can't quite bring himself to do it just yet.

Don't take it personal. With Rick...you are either in the "circle of trust" or out. He won't acknowledge much success unless he is the only not doing so. He is a Westlake fan...
Other knowledgeable sports writers will recognize Connally's efforts as do those football fans in Central Texas. You may need to read some articles outside of Austin to see that people have noticed.
LT has not played Connally or Hutto in a few years, but, I predicted a Connally win based on the physical style of play that I remember. Your stats and results back that up.
Good luck to Connally the rest of this year and I look forward to seeing Darks play when Iowa State comes to town against the Horns in a couple weeks. He and Harper gave LT fits!

Man, Rick is sooooo boring!!! and so is the other guy Danny.....
I agree with "Defense wins championship".
Rick is very bias to the WL, LT, and CP, VR, Vandergrift.
School West of I-35, 183/620 will get alot of exposure from the statesman.
But they seem to blow off all others, especially the schools east of sh130.

At least sometimes Davis pulls for Connally, the High school chat at 1pm on Thursdays the Bastrop Reporter is a real homer that he cannot unbiasly acknowledge anything or anyone but Bastrop, which is OK I guess since he has to sell papers, but c'mon be a little bit more objective.:notworthy

Again another poor choice for game of the week. What exactly does it take to get on the game of the week, I guess not 2 undefeated teams last week, nor 2 teams in a battle for 1st this week (2 teams ranked again in their own top 10) but a couple of teams battling for spots 3 and 4 in a District. Nice choice Cantu.:notworthy:notworthy:notworthy:notworthy I forgot East of Westlake.

At least they gave game balls to two Connally players in the paper today. Also, RC actually picked Connally vs Bastrop in the video preview. Interesting that DD had to choke off what he was going to say about how little chance he thinks Connally has vs Bastrop.
Should be a good game. Cougars survived the Hutto passing attack but will be severely tested vs Bastrop air game. Cougar QB will have to be a bit more accurate this week as Bastrop has played tough vs the run.
Any way....it's great that Connally is in the mix again after a dismal few seasons. Looks like the Cougars managed to keep a lot more players eligible this year as well!!

Keep turnovers down and just contain Monroe like last 2 years, Bastrop is down from last year no matter what the AA-S says. Connally has great chance especially at home, keep him in the pocket, he's short, make him pass.

^^ Yip, that is what Connally needs to do, contain Monroe, he can hurt you on the ground or in the air, kids has skills for his size.
Rudder and McNeil are the only teams to keep him in check.
I predict Connally by 3 pts.:)

Monroe is not an effective passer in the pocket, limit his rollouts, 5'8" can't see over a 6'4" lineman. Heavy dose of Defee and Lewis and Heilregel.

that is way he rolls out alot, to either run it or throw it.
85/149 .570-completion 1439-yds 21-Td 3-INT <-----That's pretty good??
63/606 9.6-avg 7-td <----not bad??

Monroe is an exciting player who deserves a lot of accolades and a lot of defensive attention. He clearly is effective in both passing and running and that makes him very dangerous. Last year's score was Bastrop 23
Connally 19. Last year is last year, but this year's Connally team is much better. Bastrop may be better as well. Connally will be in one of the best games of the weekend for the second week in a row. Good Cougar teams have always thrived as underdogs. Hopefully that doesn't change this weekend.
